  • Stanislav Pozdnyakov is an extraordinary sabre fencer from Russia who was born in 1973. Stanislav has played a crucial role not only in Russian but also in World fencing industry. Pozdnyakov is a four-time Olympic, 10-time world, and 13-time European champion. Stanislav has the biggest number of individual medals from World Championships among any fencer from any weapon in the history of fencing! (5 gold and 3 silver)
    When Stanislav was 7, he went to swimming sessions and after 2 years he joined the fencing group at Youth School of Olympic Reserve. The gold medal at the USSR championship among juniors was a starting point from which his medal count begins. In 1992, Pozdnyakov managed to take 3rd place at the USSR championship among adults, which was a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Barcelona. At age 19, he was selected from other experienced candidates to compete at his first Olympic Games in Barcelona. Candidates for last place in a team wanted to boycott the 19-year-old athlete's participation in the Olympics, but the head coach refused to change his decision. During his student years, Pozdnyakov had already become a three-time Olympic champion. Moreover, Stanislav thinks that season 1996-1997 was the most memorable in his career. During this season, he won 6 World Cups and on such an emotional lift came to the Olympics in Atlanta. The individual tournament was an intense one. In the quarterfinals, Stanislav met with his old teammate from Barcelona Olympics, and at that time a representative of the Ukrainian national team, Vadim Gutzeit. At first, Pozdnyakov was losing 12:7, but at some point he rebuilt his fencing and managed to make a comeback and win this bout by only one touch 15:14. In further fights, Stanislav classy defeated his opponents and won his first and the last individual Olympic gold. After retiring from an athletic career, Pozdnyakov served as an official of the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Since 2018 Pozdnyakov serves as the President of the Russian Olympic Committee.
