  • Chiricahua National Monument is a "Wonderland of Rocks" located in Southeastern Arizona, USA. Stunning rock formations - pinnacles, hoodoos and balancing rocks - are the most common formations in the monument. The Apaches called the area the "Land of Standing Up Rocks". Not many people visit this amazing area, since the monument is quite remote.
Recorded October 2020 in 4K Ultra HD with Sony AX700 and DJI Osmo Pocket.

Thank you! What a delight to see others enjoy the land my parents loved. I’m one of the grandchildren of Hildegard Erickson (Faraway Ranch), and my mother gave horse guided tours of the trails my Great Uncle helped design and build. My mother and father became engaged on the trails and we scattered their ashes (with help and permission from the Park Superintendent) on a point overlooking Bonita Canyon. Thank you again. I will share this with my family!

Geronimo's stronghold, hiked and camped (tent) throughout here in 1992. So atmospheric, you could almost feel the Apache presence. Classed as one of many "sky Islands" throughout Arizona. So special for and Englishman from Shropshire who is passionate about the first nations.

As to visiting southern Arizona, don't come in the summer; it's too hot. The Springtime is our most beautiful season, then our winter-time and autumn. In southern Arizona, our Springtimes and Autumns are very short, only 6 weeks, with summer heat spanning half the year from the last week of April to the last week of October. January is the coldest month by far, often frigid. Cochise County, in the southeast corner of Arizona, where Chiricahua National Monument is, is about 10-15 degrees cooler than Tucson, but the summers are still hot unless one is up in the mountains. The historic towns of Willcox, Tombstone and Bisbee are relatively close by, and Cochise Stronghold of the Dragoon Mountains too. You can see more and learn more at my large Arizona video tour playlist here on TH-cam, at my channel page.

For those wondering, Chiricahua National Monument is southeast of Willcox in Cochise County (southeast corner of the state), east of Tucson by almost 2 hours, almost to the New Mexico state line. It was part of the historic Chiricahua Apache homeland, as with all of the Chiricahua Mountains (not just the monument), the Dragoon Mountains (where Cochise Stronghold is), the Pinaleno Mountains (commonly but incorrectly called "the Graham Mountains" where the tall Mt. Graham is) and the surrounding region. Both Cochise and Geronimo were Chiricahua Apaches, both names of great renown, Cochise County receiving its name in acknowledgment of Cochise. The Chiricahua Apaches gained international renown due to their fierce resistance to both the US Cavalry and the Mexican Army in the era of the Old West, their descendants now residing not far north of there on the large San Carlos Apache tribal land (reservation), also a beautiful area in its own right. They share a tribal border with the White Mountain Apaches to their north, another tribe, each having its own land. The Chiricahua Mountains, far larger than just the monument, are a spectacular, tall, Ponderosa Pine forested and beautiful range, remote and very pristine just 60 years ago. The Chiricahua and Dragoon Mountains (both ranges) are not too far from Tombstone and Bisbee. All these places can be seen in my large Arizona playlist, a video tour, and the Cochise County section of the playlist is towards the bottom of that playlist. If opportunity presents itself in the months to come, I'll put those videos into their own playlist, but for now (Nov. 2020), they're only in the large video tour. It takes a lot of time to transfer all 2000 videos into section-playlists of their own, so with Cochise County being toward the bottom of the playlist, there are a lot of sections to transfer first, including Organ Pipe, KOFA, the lower Colorado River up to the western end of the Grand Canyon, The Canyon itself, Sedona and the Verde Valley, Flagstaff and surrounding areas, the Vermilion Cliffs and AZ Strip region, the great Navajo Nation, the Mogollon Rim and the White Mountains, the Sierra Ancha Mountains and the Tonto Basin, then Cochise County videos, followed by Sonoita/Patagonia/San Rafael Valley/Ruby/Pena Blanca Lake/Arivaca and Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge at the end of the playlist. Arizona is certainly beautiful! If anyone wants a shorter view of some of those, I have a much smaller playlist called "Beautiful Arizona, Scenery for the Soul," only 86 videos in total, and some of the very best. :)

I looked it up: Correction > The earthquake occurred in 1887; it was estimated to be a 7.6M centered close to Bavispe, in Mexico, 108 miles south of the Chiricahuas and 170 miles from Tucson, felt to both Phoenix and Albuquerque and even into Texas. Earthquake damage to buildings was reported, 51 earthquake fatalities, and significant rockfalls. There were also aftershocks, they said. In April of 2019, there was a 3.6M quake in the Duncan/Safford area, about 50 miles north of the Chiricahua Mountains.
