When Hildi PAINTED the carpet in a couple's house ORANGE while their neighbors begged her not to - that was it for me - Trading Spaces jumped the Shark and I my husband thought she should be sued. After that he couldn't stand to see that show on the screen.
I have not kept in touch with her, but that would be an amazing video!😊
I remember Hildi gluing moss on a bedroom wall... as well as her other crazy ideas. Yikes! Vern Yip was my go to back then.

I sometimes do like ugly things. My parents had not much money, so our house did not look thaaat good, and instead of acting like I was another person, I prefere to stick to my own identity, and that sometimes is linked to ugly things.. 😂 I wish it was diffrent, but I honestly feel disconnected when trying not to decorate ugly.

@@t.a.yeah. It's okay, because I wasn't raised with a lot of money as well, a lot of the trends that seem dated still seem fancy to me. Like...gray rooms. Sounds dumb, I know, but I don't hate monotone colors. The pictures still look a HELL of a lot better than the places I lived in growing up. My current apartment has light gray walls and I really love it. Way better than the tannish, light yellow walls of my last apartment. Or, walls that are supposed to be white but years of neglect have made them off-white.
I 100% understand why people don't like colored LED strips, it gives "just moved out of mom and dad's" college dorm vibes in a lot of cases. However, I work from home and use LED light strips in my office to signal working hours to myself by automating them to be a natural blue-tone during work hours to something fun or warm when 5:30 rolls around. I'd recommend it to anyone working from home who struggles to put work down at a set time, frankly it's done wonders for my work life balance to have such a huge visual cue that it's ok to clock out and turn off my work phone and computer. I couldn't stand funky colors anywhere else in the house though!
I think my husband does something similar, maybe a bit more subconsciously, I'm not sure. He works from home and has colored LED lights built into his desk. I don't think I've ever seen them on while he was working, but after hours, I've seen him illuminate the room in blue while he did other things in there. It definitely changes the feel of the space.
I definitely think they’re a great for those uses. Even though I don’t personally find them the most attractive looking design choice I do think they can be quite useful in some circumstances wether it’s work related, a signal to let others know if they can enter the room or other functional uses.

I feel like alot of people don't see the appeal of them but ive actually been loving mine. I got them for sensory reasons because you can adjust colour and brightness so easily and because i find colour lightning really relaxing. I actually have white and grey walls and when i put on a couple of dimm lights around the room you get this amazing play of colours on the walls. That was kind of inspired by the Get Back documentary series. When i saw that big hall with all the lights on the Wall that just stuck with me. Idk i even though they make everything muddy i still like a whole room with them. I guess the question is what you want from your living space. I think everybody has their own ideas about that. I dont really care about my place looking chaotic and juvenile i love it just the way it is.

The more bells and whistles on an appliance, the more things there are to break down. We had a fancy washer that didn't last a year, and it took a repairman hours to work on it. We ditched it for a washer with manual dials that's still going strong.
That was my steam dryer problem, the story of which ended with a flooded laundry room. 😂
I moved and had to buy a new washer. I insisted on a top load, with deep fill override, and old fashioned agitator, and dial knobs instead of an electronic control.
Still might not last… because it seems new appliances are not made to last, 🤞
By design really, the more things there are to go wrong the more likely one of those things is going to go wrong..
If it’s not easily repairable I don’t buy it. Plus points if a company stands by its product offering replacement parts/services for old products.
Same thing happed to us. Not only did the washer go, but so did the matching dryer that steamed (but didn't take out any wrinkles). Our new washer and dryer both have dials.

If they wanted a kid who would write "I love you," they should have shown a 4 year old. Or a 22year old. For parents out there, don't despair. They come back when the brain fully develops. 😂

I already have this problem with our doors that have panelling. I love how they look, but they do add another chore 😞
I was actually considering a geometric accent wall and actually resigned myself to having to dust it every week 😂 literally making more chores for myself.
100% agree. Definitely one of those things that can look good for a magazine but in real life would be a huge pain.
As a mother of three grown boys you 100% nailed what the use of a screen on the front of a fridge would be used for!! 🤣

OK honestly I came to the comments before I even watched the video and then I saw that screens on refrigerators I thought he meant like screen doors and the fact that you said something about having three sons and how boys do you like to open the refrigerator and just stare into it I don’t know why I thought a screen door would be great but now I’m laughing at my sleep deprived brain
We moved into my husband’s childhood home a few years ago. He told me when the stove died I could update the kitchen cabinets. The house was built in 1978 and was never updated. It’s a one piece double oven harvest gold no digital electric stove. I think it’s never gonna die😂
I painted my brown stovetop with white engine paint and it lasted several years.

Yes, the first microwave that I bought in 1984 just recently died. Like a month ago. It was used multiple times per day as well.

Totally LOVE chartreuse! Maybe not so much on a wall but in clothing, on furniture, vases….yum.

Growing up my mom painted our laundry room chartreuse and it was super cute! Also had colourful plastic beaded curtain in the entryway, lol

@@ludovicleprinceroyal8721 he does like some color. He likes dark colors now. But I am not very impressed when designers recommend all white or “neutrals” like gray to denote class and elegance. If you look at actual designer homes they have actual color.

I know! 😂 There's always at least ONE design style in each of his "displeases me" videos that I actually like &/or use. Lol. But I love the way in which he goes off on it w his particular humor. 😄
My Granny’s electric hand mixer from the 1960s and my mom’s avocado green kitchen aid stand mixer from the 1970s continue to run with no issues.
my MIL's hand mixer just started acting weird and she was complaining about it, and i asked how old it was and she said she got it as a bridal shower gift almost 40 years ago. hahahaha. meanwhile the dishwasher we got like 2 years ago is already starting to suck...??
@@christopherdewaard6932 Heck, the microwave my mom got less than 2 years ago stopped heating up food (and the handle broke off after a few months of owning it!) and we had to bust out our old one from like 2004 that still works perfectly fine.
The oven in my childhood home was made in 1980 and still worked perfectly fine when we moved in 2006. I thought it was ugly, but it was a good oven.
My MIL gave me her KitchenAid when me and my hubby got married. It had been given to her as a hand-me-down when she got married in the late 70’s. I’m pretty sure the thing is from the mid-70’s and it runs like a champ! They just don’t make stuff like they used to…..
When I moved out at 18, a friends mother gave me her 8years old microwave, I still use it 29years later.

As someone who adores colors, I absolutely fell in love with my smart lights (no stripes) which allow me to switch my white from colder to warmer throughout the day (this winter has been very gray here in Paris) & evening, but what sold me on the idea were the scenes which I turn on for like maybe an h on a quiet evening, & get to live in ever changing rainbow/ aurora/ sunset. It's soothing after a long week.
Sunrise mode is amazing!! it slowly increases the light in the room just like the sun rising and it's actually based on science for better sleep/waking up. Plus adjusting lights, their colors EVERYTHING via voice is amazing, we use it all of the time, for parties, but also was a safety thing that our elderly family loved esp when they couldn't see very well or forgot to turn off lights from bed. Literally they were able to yell and place a call to us via the smart home device that also controls the lights when they needed help but couldn't get to the life alert device they of course left by the door 👀 tech is great!

I have that with colorful walls with geometric and grunge accents 😅 I have enough pale surfaces for the aurora indulgence, but can also set the mood and visual stimulation levels really well by exploiting the color wheel. Who cares about timeless when you can have a light therapy / sensory room?
Yes! We have smart bulbs in our most used rooms, and do the sunrise setting to help wake up, and love using it for warm vs cool light depending on what's needed! And sometimes a darker blue during evening to wind down while watching TV but it doesn't disrupt.
I learned about mixing patters by studying wallpaper books, which always have photos of designed rooms that use the paper and coordinating fabrics in that book. What I observed is that you have florals/paisleys; solids, stripes, and plaids. If you do an entire room in floral wallpaper, then the curtains should be solids, and maybe an accent chair in a stripe. Or if you have a striped wallpaper, use a plaid sofa a solid chair with a floral pillow. That's how I always balance patterns and textures. Same with clothes. If you have a floral shirt, you wear a solid jacket and striped pants maybe. You don't wear floral pants, a different floral shirt, and a 3rd floral jacket.
I'm a quilter and it's the same concept. Mix patterns and scale with colors pulling from each other and it can work. All big or all small or all the same type of pattern will many your eyes hurt.
Lots of famous English designers do mix patterns and they create beautiful spaces. In fact, their own homes decorated like that.
I love Nick…chartreuse is literally half my colourscheme, and literally half of that is legit vintage.
I have one room, my art/craft room that’s chartreuse…actually it’s Thai Curry 😂 I love it. I have been considering a chartreuse, velvet couch though!

Nick I usually don’t comment but I have to chime in here to say that when there are no episodes of Colbert, Daily Show, Bill Maher or Brian Tyler Cohen to watch my husband always says let’s see something from Nick (and he is 83 years old). We don’t even usually follow home design trends, we just enjoy your humour and honest commentary which is so entertaining and endearing, such a pleasure to watch.

Your comment about the accent wall being disconnected reminds me of the what I’d love to see in a design video and haven’t, and that’s how to bring color into an open concept space without architectural details to separate rooms.
I would also appreciate this video, I would love some colour in my open plan living/dining/kitchen but have it all greige now because there's no natural breaks between the spaces.
There was one TH-cam video I watched by a refrigerator repairman who said the most common problem he saw with refrigerators was the electronic component from the ice makers. He also suggested getting a simple refrigerator without all the extras. You have it right. Things are not made as well anymore which makes for more waste and expense.

I literally had an anxiety attack when you brought up the geometric walls! As a confirmed minimalist who hates any kind of housework, my first question when considering furnishings or design is: how often do I have to clean that to make it look tidy? Those sticky-outy ledges would have me curling up into a ball and howling in despair. Nope, never, no way!

😃 so glad to find someone else who defines minimalism as spending less time on maintenence. Admittedly, I am no minimalist, but do think about cleaning before I buy and I think beige should be called beige.
My friend did house cleaning, & mentioned a few times about what a pain it was cleaning houses w lots & lots of little nic-nacs. 😅
Now I always think about that! Trying to get into the crevices of each figurine, wall decor, picture frame, intricately carved furniture, etc... is ridiculously time consuming & futile. Lol.

@@theresuga I tell people I’m ADD, self diagnosed, untreated. People have said for years that I’m high energy, but I think it’s more about strength and stamina, especially for my current age. Being aware of it is a good thing because I try to consciously control the impulses that I experience. I wouldn’t want to take any of the meds prescribed for those conditions.
@@Moluccan56 energy is one thing, but the random bouncing mind, intrusive thoughts, drifting in conversations etc is something else. I heard a comment recently that Bohemian Rhapsody is what the ADHD brain is like and it’s very true 😂 maybe you do and maybe you don’t! You have to find what works for you, not everyone needs to seek a diagnosis
Nick you’re 💯 correct about kids and the fridge! My 11 year old son would probably write “sticking out your gyatt for the rizzler” on that screen. 😂

Had no idea chartreuse was a thing. I just painted my front door chartreuse this past fall and absolutely adore the color against my home's redwood siding (have gotten lots of compliments from neighbors too.) Wouldn't want it inside though, so I have to agree with ya there :)

If you want to laugh about knits, I suggest: The museum of Kitschy stitches , A gallery of notorious knits. By Stitchy Me Yarnpants. It is quite funny.
We still have a working 20+ year old Whirlpool black French door refrigerator/freezer with water and ice maker. It is solid as rock and we have never needed it repaired. Every couple years my husband looks at the new ones and tries to convince me we need a new one with all the bells and whistles. I then send him articles and videos from refrigerator repairmen who loathe the new ones and discuss the price to repair ones with said bells and whistles. He caves. I win.
Same goes w washing machines.
My Mom's washer is 20 yrs old! We needed it repaired & ppl said, no. Don't waste money on repairing it, get a new one!
To which I say, Why? So I can replace it every 2 years!?
Repair is about $200. Replace is about $600+.. & they don't warranty them for more than 6 months.
My boyfriend's Mom has bought 2 new washers in 5 years.
I'm keeping mine.

Hilarious about the boy, 7/14, and him writing “I love you, Mom” on the screen. As far as chartreuse, I wonder if that means what we call “apple green” and “acid green”. My now-29-year-old daughter wanted bright green when she was about 15. My mother painted it, and I must admit that my eyes popped out with the brightness. I grew to love it, and so far don’t want to change the color.

I’m an (older) interior designer and just found your channel. I am absolutely in love with Nick! I completely agree with every single item you mentioned! For 30 years I’ve avoided trends and have found great success in that.
Chartreuse is my favorite color,! Been using for 7 years. My golf cart too!!!😊
I had to replace my 32 y.o Maytag washer a few years ago. So depressing.
When the young delivery guys were carrying it out, they couldn’t believe how heavy it was.

I like Chartreuse as a liqueur, and I was afraid I couldn't drink that anymore. But you meant the colour, such a relieve.
In the late 1990s, this colour became quite populair here in The Netherlands. It was known as 'gifgroen' ('poisonous green').
I really should not admit this, but I am still using my Amana microwave that I purchased in the 80's. It works like a charm. It is big and I love it.

OMG! I tried to hardboil an egg (sans water) in a Montgomery Ward microwave and my Dad was able to glue a thingie on the door and that worked for decades after! Those things were/are bombproof

YESSSS on the older appliances. They’re so much better. I buy all our appliances used. Early 90s fridge? Yep! Simple, agitator Maytag washing machine? All mine. The older, simpler makes and models and hands down better

My parents had a fridge for 40 years. It was so old my dad brought it from his first marriage 😂
I have the Samsung fridge with the screen because my husband was adamant about buying it. I now love it ! The screen light is turned off unless you touch it so it really blends in with the rest of the fridge. Also the fridge itself is super sleek since the water dispenser is hidden and it has no handles. It’s amazing to listen to music while cooking, watching or reading recipes, leaving notes and silly drawings to your family members, displaying pictures etc.
Do you need it ? No. Is it amazing? Yes ! 🙌🏼
Same - I have one and love it. Bought it from Samsung at a good discount too so it was about as much as similar models without the screen.

A friend of mine has it and uses it for all kinds of planning and lists. Of course it has French doors. I hate French doors. I could never find anything in the fridge that had them and it had problems as well. Give me an old side by side!
Me too! My husband loves something techie and we got a deal, so we got it in 2019. It does updates and still works fine. The kids watch TH-cam on the fridge, and we listen to music, check cameras, etc.

I recently grouped together a handful of landscape paintings where chartreuse really stands out prominently in three of them. Feels fresh and trendy while still grounded in my own tastes and featuring art I already own and love.
Literally LOL’d at the kids drawings on the fridge whiteboard comment! I feel like the longer you do these videos, the freer and more honest you get…and I’m here for it.

I had to laugh at the black lights in the *Nineties*!! We had them in the 70s - not from Hot Topic, but from Spencer's Gifts. Usually one bulb, and it was so our glow-in-the-dark psychedelic rock posters would look "totally cool, man" in our basements (Think Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High).
I agree with you on almost everything. I *do* like chartreuse, but I'm well aware that a very little goes a very long way, so I limit it to throw pillows, or a lampshade or the back of a painted bookcase, where it just peeks through the items on the shelves. Ditto other colors that were fun to use in the Crayola box but aren't great for the entire world - fuchsia, extreme turquoise, lipstick red. And the geometric accent walls already look dated and way too busy.
I still own my husband’s original 3ft blacklight from 1967. It still works perfectly. ☮️
The entire rant about screens in fridges was deeply relatable
My college age son put those led smart bulbs in the lamps. Most are just a soft light that we keep on the dim side when watching tv. I can go bright white when I need to. And hubby likes to make them red and green at Christmas. 😊
My neighborhood Kroger had these on sale for $4 so I bought a few. I love them lol. Lighting really helps with mood so when I’m reading a book I like it a certain way and when we are watching tv we change the lighting so our eyes aren’t straining.
I appreciate the mixing patterns section, I love the Maximalist style and my boyfriend and I joke a lot about how my interior design style is "chaotic", but in reality I want it to be a comfortable space that people can still relax in and not feel overwhelmed so whenever I get little tidbits on how to accomplish that I'm always grateful
Walking by apartments at night, and I see the whole unit lit up in blue or green makes me wonder about people! Sure, a nice little string of button lights (WARM WHITE!) to add some warmth has its place.

I use mine exclusively around the TV, personally.
I adjust the ambient strip to dark purple or blue if I’m watching something scary, or something warm on long cloudy days, they help integrate players into games similarly. It’s not a fashion statement for a lot of people, it’s just an accessory to whatever recreation exists in a space. Most of the time mine are set to a comfortable reading temperature though.
Because it's fun. It's their home anyway, besides I will die on the hill of red lights because they're objectively the best light colour for the human eye and as an autist, you have not lived until your existed and slept in a room bathed in red light. I don't currently have any right now, but I want some.
My pattern mix rule is one big, one small, three textures, and the patterns need to rhyme. Like the swishes and flowers of an oriental rug with tone on tone swirls on a pillow. The curves rhyme, and the leather of couch with velvet of throw blanket with tapestry texture of throw pillows.... It all sings together in one nice chord. So often I look at rooms and they don't sing.
We have a tiny kitchen with no space for a dishwasher. In an effort to try to make the space more entertaining for dish washing for some family members, I bought an amazon show and installed it on the fridge. It works for us and it’s not actually part of the refrigerator so it doesn’t feel like a waste of money.

On pattern, I heard from another interior designer a rule that said "1 scenic, 2 geometric" as the most pattern in any (maximalist) space, and it works really well when used with a cohesive and muted colour scheme and classic patterns such as a floral, a stripe and then a subtle self-check or spot 👌
Lol Nicks design nightmare would be my office dream room. I love, and i mean LOVE, the colored lights. The more the merrier. Blinky ones, reacting to sound ones. You name it, I would have it. But, in my defense, Nick, I'm legally blind and lights are one of the things im drawn to. I would love to have 1 space where i can go crazy with lights like it's a walk through Christmas light show but all year. Now i do agree about having them on white sometimes, but then let the color go all collors. BTW. A purple roo sounds cool to so im the weird one.

I like chartreuse, some of my fiestaware is in that color, mixed with several other spring colors and it looks lovely. I actually like that "baby poop green" color from the 70s as well, though I think it got very overdone then. What I don't understand is the trend where everything in a home is gray, black, and white, but then there will be a lone chartreuse door or pillow. It tells me "See, I'm fun, I don't hate color... look at this fun green thing right here!"
I actually have a screen fridge and have had it for over 2 years. it is the most useful product in my house. We use it every single day multiple times a day. We use it to help cook with recipes, our family calendar, it has the best music speakers in the house, our grocery list is on there, our doorbell camera, and all of this syncs with our phones so if we are gone we can access the list quickly and easily. And honestly every person who comes into our room oohs and Ahhhs over it.
I couldn't get mine to work with the doorbell camera (I think it only accepts Ring). 😒 But we do use the screen and/or speaker every day.
We have a small tv in the corner of our kitchen and we watch it or play music often. I’m glad to enjoy your fridge it sounds cool.

A trend that I am HOPING won't last is those awful 'faux ancient' rugs, or whatever they're called; rugs that look so worn out that the pattern is barely detectable anymore - like people have walked over them for centuries - but it's obvious that they're NOT old. They're brand new. The colors are cheap-looking and stingily applied. On real ancient rugs, the colors are woven in, not stenciled on top of the fibers, and the shades are faded with time, but deep and saturated. This trend for fake-old is ugly, tacky and boring. If there were such a term as 'builder grade' for rugs, this would be it. I keep waiting for this trend to go away, but it seems to have taken root.
Sebastian Bergström’s cozy Swedish apartment exploding with colors made me so happy that I am chaging my beige, brown, and neutral colors into a more colorful place I can enjoy. I am constantly in a boring beige office, beige everywhere…just tired of the color and need a burst of colors.

Because I live in a small house and have many things handed down from parents and grandparents, I am liking the cottage style as it fits my house and to me, seems timeless for the size and architecture of most small houses. One of the best ways to learn how to mix patterns is by reading books on patchwork quilting. They say similar things to you - you want to vary the scale in the patterns that you choose. Limiting the palette of colours that you use is helpful, too. Also choosing a solid fabric (or fabrics) is necessary - exactly as you said - to give the eye somewhere to rest.

I will always get colored lights that have the plain white setting on them. I can be interesting at times and/or for holidays and parties, but for classic decore I want to be able to make them clear. I also don't want them to be the main feature that I feel the need to have them on all the time. Hidden fixtures are always better unless you can make them look natural like candles. I hide remote control lights in my bookcases behind the decor or as candles. Or in planters where they can hide under soil dressing or behind the plant. That way I can use them or not at my whim.

I've been thinking about painting my dining chairs chartreuse, I'm definitely going to now! I like the way it looks with navy. I'm ok with getting tired of it in a few years. Thanks for the push to just go for it!
My partner and I switched our lightbulbs out for LED ones that can be adjuated with an app. They can change all sorts of colors but I love that I can set for warmer or cooler light and there's even a sunset feature that is nice when winding down in the evening for bed.
I love the challenge of mixing patterns. Takes a lot of trial and error. It's just a fun exercise!
I try to place them in ways that are low stakes and easy to change out. Throw pillows and the like, maybe curtains.

Your sentiments of chartreuse and baby poop green is on point, I’m going to add that I hate chartreuse yellow. These colors are too harsh in any space, the opposite of calming or happy, they read off as too intense like a headache is about to happen.
