Great vid (as always). I've always watched your videos ever since I started playing MTG arene 2 mos ago and yes, you've described the situation so well regarding facts(such as affording decks and hoarding wildcards)... Just that, playing mono-red and trying to get better with it everyday is a thing for me. The hate shall be there and yes, 'the variety' is always whispering for us to get 'em, and yes...that's the very reason I've been watching you jank and do stuff everyday using different decks, it's because as a red mage (who can't afford those expensive builds and more importantly grind for longer hours in the game), you've basically given us a lot of information on what to expect on matches and everything, unbelievable outcomes and creative games. Yes mono-red=monotonous, but CGB gaming shall give red mages the variety that red mages can't experience. Keep it up with the great vids...especially in this trying times. :D

Even 2 month old new players shouldnt need to learn how to "get better" with mono red. Thats how broken the deck is. Its stupid easy to play. You can keep a one lander, misplay several times and still come out on top. But I guess it doesnt matter because WotC will probably continue coddling new players with this broken ass shit because mono red will always been "timmy's first deck".

Suspicious? Guys... seriously? I've been playing this game for 6 months now and the first 2 months I didn't even think something could be wrong with the randomization of who goes first. The better I was becoming the more I realized how messed up it is. I'm 100% sure red decks are on the play at least 85-90% of the time against me. You can't make that up if you never thought about it until it got obvious to point of being ridiculous. Do the devs still deny it btw?

I took about a 3 week break or so from magic. This meta just has me so frustrated with the game. I love magic and I really hate for this to happen but I honestly just dread logging in anymore. After my 3 week hiatus, I decided to just play around and try not to take anything to seriously. So I built the Abzan Calix deck you recently released. I’m not kidding you when I say out of 7 matches 3 were mono red, 3 were counterspell decks, and the last was a jeskai fires deck. This wasn’t even on ladder.. this trend is literally everywhere in the game right now. Wizards need to remove daily rewards completely and find a new system for rewards. It’s to the point now where if I see a Chandra avatar and “opponent goes first” I just auto concede. Not because it’s an automatic loss but simply because it’s THAT unenjoyable to play against. I will likely come back to check out the new set but tbh I’m not very hopeful that much will change given the history of the last few sets. However, as I said, I love magic and all I can do at this point is hope for a better future for the game and I will continue to support your channel with comments and views in the meantime. Keep up the good work man. I still enjoy watching you play regardless of my personal feelings about the state of the game

I once played 10 matches of unranked and literaly 8 were a type of lifegain deck. I tried to escape by playing brawl but that didnt help either cause 30% of my matches are still lifegain. The rest is just some sort of removal/counterspell tribal. I just dont get how people enjoy these types of decks.

Last April/May when I was starting playing magic, I started playing a deck that you showed on your channel. It was a red deck, with Chandra and Frenzy. Playing that deck monotonously, taught me the rules. I learned what the cards do and how to play with and against them. When rotation hit that deck was dead. Then came Cavalcade. All of a sudden there were REGULAR turn 4 wins. Turn 4 wins with the old red deck was drawing the nuts. I couldn't do it, it was too quick, so, I started playing Risen Reef decks. I have more elemental decks than you probably! But I was making the decks myself, simply because I love that card. I made mythic with my own creation 4 months after making mythic with the red deck. Without red decks though, I probably wouldn't be playing magic now. And I haven't touched mono red (with the exception of Drakuseth, because he is a fricking huge dragon) since September probably. Also, I did it free to play ;) because you are a boss, and you make the decks that I can't afford. When I see a card I like that you play, I make the card. (and stick it in a risen reef deck!). But even when you do play decks like this, some guy is going to play that deck. And he or she will learn the rules of magic.

tl, dr: Yes, it's annoying, but it's not the only annoying seemingly overpowered strategy that threatens to ruin the fun. It's also sadly understandable and not something I expect Wizards to be in a rush to fix.
What frustrates me as well is that there are lots of fun cards in red, even in mono red, lots of fun ways to build a deck that don't need to come down to this very straightforward, bash in your opponents' heads in three turns style of playing that often allows you to play poorly and still win. I sometimes almost want to say sorry when I put down my second mountain, because it became apparent I'm playing mono red, but I'm playing silly big red that tries to stay alive long enough to do something like Purphoros into Ilharg into whatever big thing I was lucky enough to draw (since there's hardly anything that I have playsets of). I just happen to be in that colour with that deck.
I wonder whether there is some dopamine rush / addiction thing going on in the way the draw gets smoothed out. This doesn't only apply to red decks. Think about how often you see double Risen Reef and all the other Simic ramp perfectly on curve, or double or triple Thought Erasure within the first five turns - which I find a lot more annoying than having my face stomped in by then - how often Oko was on curve, cat & oven by turn 2. And for that matter: the braindead netdecking and straightforward strategies aren't limited to red either. "Ramp, ramp, ramp, Nissa, agent" gets under my skin more than red does and it's hardly less boring, Simic flash at its peak was even worse. Maybe I don't see red as much as other people, even though I play almost exclusively ladder. (I know I'll usually end up somewhere in gold because I can't be bothered to be careful about my rank, but that's good value as far as my fun in playing the game and crafting decks as f2p player goes.) I also beat it quite often if I encounter it, so that probably helps as well for not getting too worked up about it. At least they are quick losses if they happen, that may also help in not feeling as tilted by the losses. And I am probably not nearly online as long as many people, so I speak with little authority, I'm just a casual f2p'er. I imagine it gets much, much worse if you're playing as much as you do.
I wholeheartedly agree that it's much more fun to have a varied decklist, but in f2p that means playing mostly underpowered decks. I get why a lot of people find it hard to craft that way and just long for the quick wins. I'm afraid it'll probablly be impossible to convince everyone it's much more gratifying to see your silly combo go off once every few games, if your opponent is kind enough not to concede. (Don't concede if someone is doing something somewhat original, even if it's clear you already lost. Unless they're really really slow with it) I'm also afraid you're quite possibly preaching to the choir, a lot of your viewers probably already enjoy variety and some jank and silliness.
And that the game rewards the behaviour towards quick wins, means that is the way it makes the most money. Especially if it pushes people towards expecting the same experience from their paper magic. That turns out very, very costly.

    • @nvmffs
      @nvmffs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Some of the crucial cards in every deck archetype are ridiculous in the frequency they appear in the starting hands of my opponents. The Lucky Clover and Innkeeper for example. It almost seems like the game knows these decks are useless unless they start with these engine cards so it always makes sure they have at least a couple of them in the first 10 cards.

    • @MadnessTW
      @MadnessTW 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a real shame that they designed themselves into a corner they can't get out of. If they ban all the cards that have to go for enjoyable decks and more variety to be possible, they will lose loads of customers who invested in those cards/decks. If they don't they slowly bleed them instead. I wonder what would actually be the better financial decision.

I mean, sure. There are a ton of fun cards in red, but they also don't win you the game... at the end of the day, if you have a limited amount of resources, it does make sense that people will go for the superior option if the "cost" is the same (i.e. ever set of rare costs the same) and one let's you get more resources. This is not something you change by talking to the players, this is something wizard should "solve" by actually balancing their set and not pushing those two or three decks to such a power level that it's plain dumb not playing them. An actual balance for once. Because sure, mistakes happen and the wotc is made of people and not robots... but it took pretty much one second to realize that Oko was broko... and they didn't figure out that it could be used "offensively"

Some of the daily quest rewards encourage variety, but the bulk of the guidance from the client is "Play lots of games and win for Rewards". If that design were changed to focus more on fun, flavor and variety, I think you'd see a return to the style of play that we grew up with during the card shop era of Magic: investment in playing out your deck ideas and finishing out skewed games simply to see what interesting situations come out of it.

First off, thank you for everything you do. Keep making amazing content and don't get discouraged. While I do play mono red some and have ever since the days of Lackey Sligh...I definitely feel your frustration with the number of red matches you see on the ladder. Unfortunately as a competitive player that is just the nature of the beast. Mono red is a cheap easy deck to craft and pilot. It is a staple in the meta and people need to be prepared to beat it. It functions as a way of balancing control and combo strategies that would also make the game not much fun. Imagine a meta without aggro strategies. My paper decks for standard are mono red, white devotion, black devotion, temur clover, mono green stompy and a weird aggro gruul fires with Ilharg. Of course on arena, brewing and testing is my obsession so I make new decks every day almost but I'm mostly an aggro player. Mono red just happens to be one of the most effective aggro decks like Rakdos knights was pre-theros. Unfortunately, if people are stuck on monored without ever expanding to other strategies then they miss out on 90% of what makes the game fun to me. Keep up the good work and thanks for all the amazing brews. Oh yeah... And I do enjoy the new format and the closing remarks FYI.

Really love your perspective on the game!. Other than the recent ur flash deck, my favourite decks have all been the ones I cobbled together myself. Had a 10 week 3-0 streak at one of my local card shops in Toronto with an orzhov control deck based around RNA kaya and angels. Before war had a really good running with a wayward swordtooth/experimental frenzy gruul dino deck that was an absolute blast to play. A big part of why those decks were so fun was because I came up with them myself and I knew no one else (that I knew of) was running them. Recently, being tuned in a lot more to competitive MtG I haven't been doing anywhere near as much brewing, I think partially because it's easy to seem overwhelmed with all the decks other people have come up with already, but it makes me really enjoy the decks you put out as you highlight the variety available and give some competitive options that don't feel completely stale. So thank you for your work! Your concise narration of the games has definitely helped me improve my skills and your brews have given me something to look forward to playing whenever my deck of choice starts feeling monotonous . Looking forward to your future videos

Also people really need to work on their limited skills if they want to build their collection! Really feel like this can't be stated enough. I don't play a lot of standard and my collection is quite formidable just from jamming lots of drafts. Rare drafting can help build up collections rather quickly and gold isn't super useful otherwise. Also limited is great for developing deck-building skills and for really driving home the understanding of fundamentals. Seems really win-win to me

I feel playing only 1 deck everyday makes the game seem like a chore...and nobody likes chores. I found moderate success just crafting random decks that fit the quest requirements and the matches are way more fun.

It's also fun not to craft almost anything and just make do with what you randomly got. This way you discover strangely good combinations that you would've never tried otherwise.

Thank you so much for this rant. My latest brew (which I spent so many wildcards on) is now at 0-7 vs Monored. Even though I'm main-decking tons of removal. It does fine against other Tier 2 decks (and even some Tier 1 decks) And to the people saying "just play Bo3", these 7 losses were all in the Bo3 queue. Here's how almost every single one plays out: Round 1 Monored goes first and wins. Round 2 I go first and they concede as soon as things don't go their way. Round 3 Monored goes first again and wins. I got to be on the play for Round 1 a couple of times, but it doesn't make much of a difference without sideboard cards. sigh

Stayed for the ramble. I'm unconvinced that this is a player problem - while there are certainly some players that enjoy red, I think the vast majority of this overage of mono-red boils down to the fact that it's cheap and effective, which makes it a common milestone for anyone building their collection.
I've read in a f2p setting, if you're not the paying customer, you're the product. And what I'd say to those that are paying customers, if you're not satisfied with the product, you should look to the company that designed this game, that creates the incentives and meta game, to improve it.
I'm sure if they did like League of Legends did and made a few "free deck of the week" decks available to play in ranked, that held up competitively against what they would play against, you'd see a ton of players gladly shuffle out of mono-red and into something less monotonous.

Everyday i check what you're playing in the video, then import the deck into Arena to see what cards i'm missing and what i can use to replace them. most of the times it works and i have fun.

I will probably try this deck eventually but deck building is what I love about magic. The agony of deciding which awesome card doesn't quite fit and needs to be cut, the shattered dream of a cool combo that never quite works, and the thrill of finding sixty cards that are fun to play and win games... that's the soul of magic for me

I'm a red mage. My pet commander deck is mono red Chandra Tribal. The strongest deck I own is pioneer mono red burn. The first deck on MTGA I ever crafted and grinded with was mono red burn. That being said, I love MTGA because there are so many archetypes that I can play on MTGA that I wouldn't be able to afford in real life. I actually really do like UW control with full playsets of Teferi and Narset, mono green Henge with a full playset of Questing Beast, and any deck with Fires of Invention. My go-to deck on MTGA right now is 5 colour Niv-Mizzet, which is just total jank, but still wins games and gives me the satisfaction of knowing I built the deck myself. I'm a red/Izzet mage by heart, but there's more to the game for me than just spamming ladder with the best deck.

I have been playing for less than a year. My buddy had a CUBE he proxied and we would do that occasionally on game night. Knowing nothing about the game and how it works I gravitated towards Red/Black/White. When I downloaded Arena and started playing I started with the Jace War of the Spark Planeswalker deck. I love that deck and will always love that deck. Because Brainpulp mentioned Simic Ascendancy I got on the ladder to earn enough packs/money to afford the wild cards I needed to get the enchantment. Unfortunately a Planeswalker deck does not fair well above Silver. With the few resources I had I went to MTG Goldfish (I think) and found a competitive deck I could rank with so I could earn my wildcards. At the time I did not have the wildcards to put together the ESPER deck & others, but I had already earned a Goblin Chainwhirler & Runaway Steamkin from daily card events. Fanatical Firebrand is a common as is Viashino Pyromancer. I spent wildcards on Ghitu Lavarunner, and Lightning Strike. I then added other common and uncommon cards in Red until I had already acquired to approximate the deck. I then ground out in Bo1 until I got the daily quests done. Once I hit 5K gold I did the ranked draft. I did not care about being "X" rank I just wanted the extra rewards from ranking higher to I could get my Hydroid Krasis and Simic Ascendancy. I got some lucky Red rewards like Wizard's Lightning etc as well as Steamkin making he deck even stronger. After all of that work & grinding out to complete the RDWs deck I hit Mythic & built up a solid love of the fluidity of the deck.
I got my loot and crafted my Hydroids and Simic Ascendancy cards. I brewed and brewed. When the next season started I played Simic Ascendancy at the start. I got through to the top of Gold I think, then hit a wall. ESPER ate me alive; the Teferi twins at me alive.
If I was to beat the two Teferi's and all of the jank in the ESPER deck I needed more cards. To get the cards see above. In Bo1 I ground out another run to Mythic. And it was a grind. Just like you say in your rant & because I am not an experience Magic player it was two wins, 1 loss all the way. But I got good at piloting the deck. When I added in Experimental Frenzy things got really awesome and I started having those explosive turns where you go "wow."
As the course of the year goes on I got bored with RDWs and could not wait for rotation. I played a variety of decks featuring Red in some way. I had fun but got discouraged. I hated Teferi anything so would not play the card. The same with Nissa. I have such a hate for both of those cards it is irrational. Having said that I do play them (although breaking down and playing Nissa only happened with Sultai Midrange this month).
I still play RDWs. I love the feel and flow just not as much as the old version. I am "grip it and rip it" personality if you understand the sports metaphor. It is not the deck I want to play. I really want to play Goblins! lol I am looking forward to Ikoria because my biggest interest lately has been Izzet.
Why right all of this? I don't know. I love Red and had to give it a shout out. They say new players gravitate to Red or Green. I see it. I am not good enough yet to put together truly degenerate anything. But I love Red/"X" decks. I have two goals for my second year of Magic lol. Get good at Izzet craziness and get a mono-red sneak cheat deck to work consistently. I still love my Jace deck. I have two versions which I sometimes spend an entire day playing just to get it to pop off. I am also close to quitting Arena completely and just playing Commander a couple of times a month. I hate War of the Spark that much.
    Be safe everyone.

So, way back in the day when Tempest was standard (we called it Type 2 back then), I played a lot in the tournament cycle in my small home town. There was a local store there that sold me my first pack of magic cards (Ice Age) and I was completely hooked. I worked at a local steak house and spent all my extra dishwashing money on packs. I remember pulling my first cursed scroll and absolutely freaking out; it was good times. My favorite memory of magic was building two decks for a local tournament that I and my best friend played. My friend played my favorite white weenie: 4x white knight (5th edition was our core set back then), Paladin en Vec, Cursed scroll, Mother of Runes--I almost remember the entire list. No one had ever played scrolls in a white weenie before (at least not in my home town) and it creamed the store owner's Winter Orb based control. I was so proud. I played a weird Red/White/Blue deck--in old school type two mind you--with tradewind riders, mana leaks, more cursed scroll, force spikes in the side board (that was fun), a few of my favorite white weenies, and some red removal. I placed 5th in the tournament. But you know what? I didn't care. Primarily because the deck was so damn fun and that 5th place was *my* 5th place. When Urza rotated in at the next tournament we got Tolarian academy and the first combo deck I'd ever seen: I drew my whole deck third turn. It blew me away.
All that to say: dude, CGB, I love your outlook. I love your content. I've watched every single video you have produced in ELD since I booted up arena to relive the nostalgia of the days I describe above. I tried to get to mythic three times I've never made it past Diamond. I cared *a lot* for a good long while. I don't really care anymore. Your rant reminded me of why I fell in love with the game in the first place: the creativity of crafting your own weapon and walking into battle with it; win or lose.
    Thanks dude. Keep it up.

I'll tell you a secret that's probably not so secret anymore. If you queue for ranked and concede after 2-3 turns and do this 100x in a row all your opponents for like 50 games are playing jank or are brain dead. I got to Mythic in 2 seasons doing this. People think MTGA is fine but the matchmaking, shuffler, and coin flip for first play is broken.

I made my own Kroxa deck that I've been working on over this entire standard. I have fun playing that for at least half of my daily games, even though it's the "same" deck every day, but it is because I enjoy the struggle of tweaking and improving it. I now have it to the point that I am quickly ranking up. I love playing red mages and crushing their dreams of mythic using my own creation that I've worked very hard on. I will also work on other decks on the side of tweaking that one.
The other thing I cant stand is when I see the same deck lists over and over with no original additions or changes. To see the same UW control deck over and over, the same Simic Flash, Fires, and Clover decks. I wish I had a special emote for the one person I get matched against each day that had the courage to play their own deck or at the very least their own take on one of the current top decks. Like a "Thank you for trying something different and making our game interesting".
Thank you CGB for always trying new things and inspiring me and others to do the same. And to the red mages and aetherub mages that continue to only copy paste top decks into arena: A top deck is only a top deck until someone tries something different or takes a chance on a tweak that drastically improves it. Be brave and try something new!!!

A couple weeks ago I designed a Rakdos Aggro deck that made me happy and felt targeted for the metagame and winning matches with that deck, despite being a Red mage, makes me far more happy than drilling a thousand Red games. Recently during MagicFest I got my invite to Weekly Championship 2 with Mono Red after failing with my Rakdos brew and Jeskai Fires and I also played Mono Red in the event (went poorly) but I did that because it felt safe and it was what I understood.
Later I would see somebody went 9-3 in Mythic point challenge with a modified version of my homebrew and I felt this pang of regret for not believing in my idea and trying my best not just to win but to have fun with my own creation. I've played Mono Red virtually since I began Magic but I took pride in it in paper because I was poor and it was the strongest deck I could affordably build: control decks always smacked of elitism to me and I felt good winning with my cheap cards -- a playful jab at anybody who spent more money than I did on Magic. But even if I am a Red mage at heart, my recent competitive transition during MagicFest has demonstrated I do operate out of fear of not being able to play new decks better than I can play Mono Red. My focus has been on winning rather than truly enjoying the game: I do believe in the Cleave as Seth Manfield would say but if it means anything this Red mage wants to be able to say they can comfortably play in any style competitively and I admit I doubt myself in styles outside of aggro.

My biggest gripe is that RDW is so common in the Bo1 standard queue. At least half of all of my matches are against people playing the very same deck with minor adjustments. At this point it feels like you either play RDW yourself or contort your deck to fend off RDW (and even then getting a slower starting hand or being on the draw breaks your neck).

I'm gonna craft this, play endlessly in BO1 ranked, and get to Mythic. And not feel ashamed one bit.
WotC doesn't seem to feel ashamed for allowing this, or for having garbage tier servers that keep on disconnecting you in the middle of a game to the point monored actually looks a viable option for someone who can't afford to play long games without losing due to being disconnected. It was already trash but now with quarantine it's beyond worse. At least in my area.
By the way cool video CGB. You always deliver, one way or another!
As to me, I've had it. It's enough. Go ahead and check the official Arena website. It shows decks usage. Monored is absurdly higher than every other deck. Of course it's everywhere.
Because it works. It's sad but hey, c'est la vie!
I'm tired. Soon it'll be 1 year since I started Arena. The lack of variety in BO1 is staggering. Nowadays it seems to be even worse.
There's a good 40% of my opponents that are monored. They win 75% of the time. So out of 100 games there's this part where I battled 40 red mages and only won 10 games.
In order to rank up you need to be able to win consistently 2 out of 3 games that's about 67/100 games.
So out of the 60 games that aren't monored I need to win 57. Brilliant.
The game is rigged, it's not even up to debate. From a business PoV it makes complete sense to enforce around 50% winrate. Besides who's gonna pretend randomness can happen in the computer world?
The fact that some decks can perform on Arena but not in real life paper Magic should tell you it's fishy. Easiest example is 13 lands decks.
The matchup is rigged, the shuffler is rigged, the fact that you can get away with a 13 lands deck is a shame, the fact that you can trick the algorithm for some time is proof of that.
Try making brand new decks you'll be 1st to play several times in a row. Try building a deck with no rare in it. Try deckbuilding with 12 or less creatures. Try with 20 or more. Compare the matchups. Try a deck with plenty of instants and counter and see how often you'll be on the draw and/or facing Teferi.
Craft a deck with this single copy of this mythic you wanna try and see how often you get it during the first games. So that you'll want to spend some cash maybe in order to craft more.
Craft a deck with rare lands and see how often they show up in your opening hand.
The game can and will put you against your deck's nemesis if you're close enough to rank up.
It knows whether or not you put real money in and will adjust your games to reward you.
Do not underestimate the capabilities of Big Data powered system. If it wants to mess up with you, it will. This is absolutely nothing new, it's ''F2P design 101''. One can prove it by some hacking tricks provided they're skilled enough, and expose the lies behind ''randomizing works properly in our game'', but given the legal consequences it's clearly not worth it.
Anyway here am I. Tired of this shenanigry.
I don't wanna pay money for a rigged game. Who would? But I want to build various, fun, multicolored, somewhat janky, sometimes competitive decks.
And for this I'll need wildcards. Spamming Monored until I consistently end up in Diamond or maybe Mythic will yield much better results in term of acquiring cards, rather than getting stuck in gold or struggling like hell to make it to platinum. So that's what I'm gonna do. Lots of people already do it.
Then there are the 'stupid' kind. The % of players spamming monored and ending with lots of unused wildcards, because they lack some brains to figure out what to craft and/or some balls to actually craft it.
I like variety, I like synergies, I like the thought process in deckbuilding. That's why I love content like CGB makes. I often say MTG is a game that'll make you smart(er). Improve your reasoning, analysis, and memory. Then I'll log in and see brainless monored everywhere, slamming Embercleaves.
Monored is THE deck for people with the tightest budget. In terms of money, of time, and of IQ. Sadly we live in a world where people lacking money and/or time and/or brain cells are the majority. So is monored, the most played deck.
I'm gonna be a red mage. Get ranked up. Get wildcards. Craft the decks I really want. And never play red again until I need to repeat this process. What's wrong with this? Absolutely nothing. WotC doesn't give two sh*ts, therefore neither won't I.

Monored works? I've personally never had any problem with them. I usually make them quit in 3 turns. What's so good about them? I mean, the guys in this video are clueless, they didn't even kill the steam-kin a single time.

    • @bobmcguffin9028
      @bobmcguffin9028 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nvmffs oh come on. You know what Im talking about. Dont be that guy passively bragging about his deck.
But if your question is legit well....since you can't out aggro monored (although UW flyers on curve can sometimes be on par, then if you Sephara you have a 7/7 lifelink body but sometimes it's not even enough) then it's a matter of ''how well/quick can you setup good defences?"
And since monored is brutally one-dimensional, the more you prepare against it, the more you drift towards being unprepared against other decks.
I'm a control player. Meaning I have an absurdly low amount of bodies to put on the board. It does perform really well against a good variety of decks though. But the low mana bodies are too frail and can't take the assault.
Basically I have about my opening hand + 2 turns to find something for half their swarm, then 2 more turns maybe to find something for the other half. This or I have starting hand + 3 turns to wipe the board. And wiping the board on curve doesn't guarantee success, as they can sometimes 'rebuild' with Light Up the Stage, topdeck more hasties, finish me off with burns, not to mention Anax. I used to think ''as long as I can T4 wrath it's gonna be fine'' but it's not true anymore!
My midrange decks perform well against monored. Gotta thank monoblack and golgari for this. Even orzhov can do. Sometimes. But I have the opposite issue: I can handle monored(not always!) but then VS other decks there's gonna be a twist and Im gonna be eventually outclassed by Jeskai, Azorius, or Simic Agent.
So far I'm bothered because I just can't fit 3 Glass caskets in. That would really help against monored, but it'd be pretty much useless against anything else(either the bodies will be too big, or they won't be brutal/aggro enough to justify use of casket. Life total is a resource too^^)
As for the guys in the video, well I think they just were unprepared. Not so clueless. Look again:
Monogreen had only 2 opportunities to get rid of steamkin. That is, draw a fight spell.
Azorius likely had a few more answers but didn't draw them. And didn't have much more time for a wipe or something like banishing light. Considering the presence of monored I'm also surprised not to see more Deputies of detention btw.
Losing Rakdos got greedy keeping with 2 lands only, but against another deck that could have turned out just fine. In his situation only a Claim the firstborn could have saved him.
Monoblack had the rider on time, and he probably gambled on having a 2/3 lifelink body being better at absorbing the dmg, which is understandable when you gamble on opponent dropping more bodies instead of boosts or a Cleave.(''i assume he doesnt Cleave for once so I'll just let steamkin be one more turn and start by blocking other stuff that I can kill while gaining HP"). Didn't do the maths but maaaaybe playing the adventure then the body could have done it. Assuming he had the time to pull off a Cav.
And Bant did aether gust into Uro on time and still it wasn't enough.
Because that's the thing: it comes at you fast. Too freakin fast. For me typically in the starting hand I'll see some good stuff and think ''it should be fine except VS red mage'' but I won't mulligan just for a chance of a T2 answer, risking not to have the other cool stuff anymore and being at card disadvantage.
T4 Cleave, or even T3, is really brutal, depending on what you play you could have lost between 7 and 15 HP. It can win T4 on the play sometimes. And if you survive or wipe there are Anax or Trollbran to finish you off. That's why it works. You can bring a deck designed to stomp monored and still lose.
Winning Rakdos had to have perfect curve AND our CGB not playing Torbrann. Still, an infuriate would have been enough if devil had blocked. This or 2 shocks.
Having said all that, I'd be curious to know what magic trick you pull off to make red mage scoop and seem to be so chill about it.
Feel free to drop tips! And have a nice day!

I liked your comment until you started rambling about how the game and RNG are massively rigged like some sort of flat-earther right wing conspiracy theorist

    • @bobmcguffin9028
      @bobmcguffin9028 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jbert423 flat earth believers are a different kind of people if you want to think about it. Some are ignorant, some are crackheads, some have adopted this extreme intellectual stance of questioning everything because either it puts them in a comfortable mindset, or they don't know better and just pushed it to the max, or they one day suddenly were struck by some epiphany about the lies spread by any kind of official authority.
As a whole they embody a convenient strawman with the main goal of making every other 'conspiracy theory' look ridiculous.
Some conspiracies are in broad light out there, like the NWO thing, it's just that it's been about 20 years that 'conspiracy theorists' have been warning others about the master plan unfolding. Now that it's almost done, and with all these steps taken in between, recent detractors have nothing more to say than ''this is the normal course of actions''(because they are too young to have known better or too stupid to use critical thinking, or too scared to lift the veil) while old detractors are much more quieter and often have switched sides, except those who can't afford to lose a well paid job, either for lack of skill, balls, willpower, morals, or just money.
It may very well be crazy to see conspiracies everywhere. It's even crazier to see them nowhere at all. Most often, and aside of those involved in said conspiracies, it boils down to 2 teams opposing each other: the ones that have accepted the possibility that governing bodies could be malevolent on purpose, and the others that are often too afraid to imagine it because of the cognitive dissonance it could bring upon their feeble minds.
As far as Left VS Right I can't tell. Being from Europe, here the traditional L/R opposition was based on the Labor/Capital opposition. Why, when, how, and by whom did this semantic slide occur is very revealing in terms of social engineering. But considering our economy is all about virtual money, financial bubbles speculation, wealth concentration, I'm not quite sure where the Left is anymore. In fact, aside from allowing homos to marry and other minor changes* they don't exist anymore, and we are already living in a far right wing world.
*this societal change in the Western world is a typical example. The confusion that the Left still exists arises because we often forget the coin has 2 sides. Typically in politics there are 2 sides for each coin: the social one, and the economical one. Balancing is tough, it's often a matter of believing which side has more influence over the other. Like, what does the world need more? LGBT, or fair wealth redistribution? Not saying one is irrelevant, simply that one is more relevant than the other when contextualized. Because poverty affects more people, so maybe it's better to tackle down this one in priority. Anyway, one of this is leftist from a social PoV, the other is leftist from an economical PoV. But both are leftists concepts.
And that's pretty much the gist of it: the 99% are given intellectual breadcrumbs(as far as politics are like)that are only related to the social side of the coin. The social L/R red herring maintained to make people forget that their opinion is no longer required for what's about the economical side of the coin, which has been overtaken by R a while ago. On the economical side of the political coin, L is so irrelevant that it's non existing anymore in our Western world. The governing bodies only offer shades of economical R.
Anyway, about MTG Arena, I can tell you that it's rigged. You don't actually have to believe me. You can believe WotC when they say ''the shuffler is fine''. In either case, whoever you decide to listen to (people saying it's rigged VS WotC), you will do it without being presented any proof, based only on what's known as ''argument from authority''.
If someday the majority of players are saying ''it's rigged'', and provided you won't get any benefit to say otherwise, you will switch sides. Because you're much more comfortable being part of the majority/being on ''authority's'' side.
Or you will switch because too many fishy looking situations will personnally happen to you. One can only be cautious with such assumptions.
From an economical stance, it is logical to rig a matchmaking/shuffling system. If you don't consider the nr1 priority of a company (and too often the only one) well too bad, that's on you.
I'd like to remind you that randomness is technically impossible to achieve in the computer world. I also believe randomness to be non existing in our physical world, the term simply being used instead of ''sum of the factors and their impact that are unknown to us'' but that's a different story. All the RNG and pseudo RNG we have out there are rigged in essence.
To which extent ? This is where debate starts.
Technically again, rigging the matchmaking so a monogreen will face a flyers deck is not only possible, but easy. Remember we live in a Big Data world, analytics are everywhere.
I find it quite revealing of this ''scared mindset'' when the same people who believe ''big brother conspiracy'' to be real about targeted ads (aka a merely annoying situation in an everyday context) but will say it's fake for rigged matchmaking (aka a detrimental situation in a competitive context) even though the technology used in both is the same.(same idea, not same same)
Again, the single fact that a 17 lands deck can perform much better in Arena than in real life paper MTG should be enough to tell you something's fishy.
I suggest you look on Reddit, for a post from Douglasjm. At the very minimum, it's an useful informative post.
Cheers to you, and have fun in the Arena! Never forget the fun brought by this awesome game, from spotting synergies to brewing decks to pulling off a janky combo or whatever suits you!
      Cheers!

I totally agree with CGB. Magic is about fun and the sheer infinite possibilitys to build decks you like. Perhaps you like the artwork for a certain guild or you like a tribe or you want to play all the instant spells there are. I even like competition up to a certain point.
But by giving players daily wins and a rankingsystem, it just encourages them to build decks, which are as time-effecient as possible, than playing it until they archieve to get the most outcome of it, because now they can build decks, they actually like (hopefully)... or these players just loooove winning...
I think, the players should be rewarded just for the login, playing Matches even losses or after one week or so to encourage them playing MtG.
Edit: I don't mind some casual Rant for as long as it is reflected and don't hurt people.

I stayed till the end. I'm a midrange player (usually Dimir fliers) and while I'm not a fan of control, as least control has different variants to it. There's only one way to play RDW. I also agree that people are hiding behind "I can't afford to play anything else" while they have a ton of wildcards saved up. I spent every wildcard I had on my Dimir flier deck and at first I didn't win much at all. But I got better with it, learned how to fight the meta, and got it to mythic. I'd take that deck against ANYTHING in standard, and expect to win. I do play BO3 though.

The state of the current meta with 3 mana planeswalkers that can do everything and turn the game into Hearthstone for the other player, the usual Simic MEGA RAMP stuff, is why I hardly play ranked ladder anymore and I mostly build my own Brawl decks. If I want to climb the ladder to get the end-of-season cosmetics then I'll just craft a quick wins deck like mono red and then go back to Brawl once I get what I need. I used to build my own constructed decks but I won't do so until some of the WAR stuff rotates out.

I like big red. But I've just stopped playing online; I'll stick with paper. The client is not made for me, its incentives don't target me, and Wizards' plan for it is not headed in a direction that takes a player like me into account. Magic in paper is game, but online it's a sport and I'm in it for the game. It ain't just mono red aggro; its the attitude. People find a list of the "competitive decks" and they play to win, and for that only--those are the only incentives Wizards' provides. There's no space (easily accessible; netdecks are 90% of unranked when the meta settles) for people on the client to exclusively play to have fun. I'll support streamers who try to switch it up, so thank you CGB for bearing the bullshit that I just can't anymore.

I really appreciate the sentiment of your statements at the end about how winning with your own creation feels awesome. In another card game, Eternal, the first time I ever got to Masters (Mythic) it was with basically an esper control deck that I created to attack the meta and spent a lot of time tuning. Finding that right combination of cards that finally felt like it worked and then cruised up the ranks will always be one of my favorite gaming memories.
On the other hand, I'm really just a spike at heart and I am very capable of simply playing mono red day after day if that's what's getting me the wins and still really enjoying myself. Anyway, good content as usual.

I'm not against people playing mono red even if it's because is the cheapest way to get rewards without paying money. The only thing that It's not fair, is looking at mono red as a tier 0, which makes every single other deck in disadvantage, that's where I think this went unfair and something has to be done on order to get mono red back into the tier 1 with at least another 2-3 decks in the same category.

I've had some of my most fun in magic playing with and against mono-R in bo3/paper, and for me that's because part of what makes the deck interesting (and I think quite important for healthy metagames) is the fact that it's pretty straightforward to sideboard against, and that's where it gets really complex.
also the "it's budget!!" excuse seems like it was way better in GRN standard given current mono-R builds have ~8 mythics and ~16 rares (depending on anax vs. phoenix, torbran or not)

Here is some insight into why I am a Red Mage...
I have played MTG since 1994. I have played virtually everything from control to aggro. I have been to tournaments of all kinds excepting Pro Tour events. I have won on turn 1 and turn 50. So playing Red these days is not a casual choice.
My experience has taught me to win as fast as possible when rewards are online. This reduces the need for me to interpret and respond to peculiar/complex board states.
It is best to win by Turn 4 or Concede in the limited time I often have to compete as well. Many Red Mages just want the game to end quickly I assume so they may have similar thought processes.
What do you folks think of my reasoning?

    • @bobmcguffin9028

That's because trample doesn't care. Trample connects the damage beyond what's needed to kill the blocker. Remove the blocker and it's basically a free attack.
Also Double strike doesn't care. Remove the blocker and there is still the 2nd strike that will connect.
So when you have a Cleave that gives you double strike + trample (and +1/+1) the cat sac trick becomes quite the joke.
