In 1980, I lived there for at least 6 months. At that time, this ashram was lively and vibrant. In this ashram we used to practice Transcendental Meditation and hopping every day. The TM program was a craze at that time. At that time, the ashram in-charge was Shri Surendra Brahmachari. The ashram was very beautifully organised and the garden was excellent. There were so many different kinds of flowers. The food was cooked in pure cow's ghee. My residential cottage number was 69. It was beside the river Ganges.

I wished I had known at the time as I would have shared the vodka I had on board as it is not easy to get a drink there. On a side note we fell in love with the Little Buddha Café. Swastika name itself is sanskrit and its roots are in Indian it may have gone to Ukraine or other places by people of indian origin migrating out of India
I respectfully disagree. The Aryans did not migrate out of India but rather into India from the European Steppe to Iran then to India, as evidenced with Hindi being Indo-Iranian and belonging to the Indo-European language.

It's amazing how quickly things deteriorate when they're no longer being used.
Things deteriorate much quicker in the tropics and in places with high humidity. This video shows how the seemingly permanent concrete structures we build today are far less robust than the many thousand-year-old stone structures that you've visited on this trip. It makes me think of George Clemenceau's comment on seeing the newly-completed administrative buildings of New Delhi in the 1920s: "What beautiful ruins these will make!"

It is amazing and at the same time disturbing to see this once beautiful place in such ruined condition. Why is this place not renovated? There is so much potential there, for a museum, a hotel, ashram and more.

There is some sort of aesthetic to it. Every ruin has it. Sometimes it is better to imagine what was there then to actually be there.

Another interesting tour . Here and Greece i think are your favourite places. Could i suggest you come to Scotland some summer to explore all the sights we have here. Anytime you have been here has been winter so summer in the uk would be good to see :) There is a place at Eskdalemuir in Scotland that you would like .It is called the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery that is a very interesting place . Im sure you will have heard of it . Also all along the south west coast of Scotland all the way north is a wonderful place to roam and full of history.

The USA/European hippie culture of the sixties is alive and well in India and Nepal. Rishikesh is a prime example.
Hippies were essentially against consumerist, capitalist and highly competitive Western culture of that era and were spiritually attracted towards the East in general and India in particular, bands like Beatles provided popularity to them. So called sub-culture or anti-culture namely Hippies was never part of Indian society neither it is now, we hosted them as frugal tourists and so did a long list of countries starting from Turkey to Pakistan
Rishikesh is not particularly famous for hippies. The main attractions of hippies in India are the Parvati valley, Goa or Hampi etc.
I agree with the comments. The “hippie culture” in India/ Nepal is very concentrated in certain areas. I agree not in Rishikesh but it is in neighboring Laxman Jula and Tapovan. Thank you for your comments.

Formally called Chaurasi kuti ( 84 meditation huts) it was built with money donated by an American Heiress. It started to be developed as a tourist location in about 2015 .

Only occasionally, usually on a beach where I don't need a yoga mat, since I don't travel with one.

Just discovered your channel and starting off with the Morocco playlist! 👍🏻 Sitting here considering buying a GoPro 10 and your video showed you giving up on it as it kept shutting down due to overheating and you switch to your DJI osmo action. Have you given up on the GoPro 10? Or did you go back to it?
I discovered that the reason it was overheating was because of the wind stopping foam device that I had around the camera. Once I removed that it stopped overheating. However as you can see in this other video, without the wind stopper there's a problem with wind noise: th-cam.com/video/TNHiFP2GYAA/w-d-xo.html I much prefer the DJI Osmo, I only used the Gopro for that one because I'd run out of battery with the DJI.

Things have changed in the last decade.
@@techtrancegateway I've been to Rishikesh. There are over two hundred ashrams there and before covid they were thronged with people from all over the world. Parmath Niketan has a thousand rooms and sometimes they are all full. Plus in 2109 when I was there there was a frenzy of new hotel construction, especially in Laxman Jhula and Tapovan.

Oldest Swastika are found in Ukraine. It tells us Indian Culture is widespread in all Eurasia. India is the most oldest civilisation. Oldest site of vedic civilization is "Bhirana", Haryana date backs to 8000 BCE which is atleast 10000 year old.
So called swastika is essentially an Aryan race symbol and it chiefly depicts the Sun though many interpret it as symbol of intercourse. You will find Swastika wherever there were Aryan race people, that's it.

@@rasheednode If you look to the sky, towards the north and want to identify the Pole Star, you have to first seek the Big Dipper constellation. Dipper means a ladle, the kind used to put ghee in the yagna fire. This ladle-shaped constellation has seven stars. In Hindu scriptures, it is known as Sapta Rishi Mandal, or the constellation of the seven seers. The outer rim of the ladle, directly, has two stars. When we stretch an imaginary line across these two stars, it reaches the Pole star.
The interesting thing to note about the Big Dipper is that it is seen in the sky all through the day and all through the year. All through the day, it rotates around the Pole Star. And all through the year, we notice that the starting position changes, so it is up in winter and down in summer, to the left in spring and to the right in autumn. The Big Dipper, thus mapped around the Pole Star through the year, makes the Swastika sign.
Dhruva Tara represents immortality. The child who sits on the lap of god. The Pole star also represents the soul, the home of Shiva, the wisest one. The four ladles, in the four directions, represent the seven sages making offerings to the Yagya Purusha, who also embodies the Pole Star all through the year to ensure good (su) happens (asti) in all seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter.
This is of course art, poetry and philosophy being projected to the stars.
Hence the orgin is in India

Too bad those domes were abandoned, it is a huge place, must have cost lot of money to build. Beatles are unknown in India to most people.
I remember seeing them referenced somewhere in India once, but it was misspelled as the Beatless, which is funny because the extra s gives it the exact opposite meaning.
Yes it is true and India was still struggling country busy with socialistic policy in 70s and economy not opened. Everything changed after 1990s when India decided top open up economy and since then it has been assimilating with world economy, though not as fast.Western influence on domestic population was negligible till 90s.

Have those buildings been derelict for a long time, or simply abandoned after the visit of The Beatles and others had ended?
I think it was abandoned over time in the 1980s and 1990s.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Makes sense. It was more of a gradual process, until the buildings were no longer maintained.
It reminds me of some abandoned buildings that had been used for accommodation that you have come across on the Island of Brach, Croatia, and also somewhere in Greece if I remember correctly.
It was under protected wild life century.
@@subaaaan Yes it had to be abandoned as it fell under Forest reserve. On a side note, Mahesh Yogi was a celebrity Yogi with little impact on domestic India.

Hi Gabriel, Amazing surprise, of course, you had to go to the Beatles Ashram it's a shame there in disarray does this mean that people in India are moving away from transcendental mediation and these ideas are passe it would be a great shame. These practices are still applicable today people seem to be moving from the practical beliefs and more into the material beliefs in this ever-changing world. Of course, George was the most religious of the Beatles with songs like Here Comes the Sun and My Sweet Lord and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth).
