I buy this block of lignum vitae at my local woodshop. Is in the shop for like 4 months but never decided what to make with... So today was the day so put that small block on the lathe and turning freestyle. This wood is awesome super green but when you start turning it turns orange and the smell is very unique.

Nice job.. Very pretty color.. The wood has a specific gravity of over 1.1 and will not float. Ha.. The wood resists water and is still utilized as a seal in boats where the propeller shaft goes thru the boat..

My brother used to do turning before he did jewellery and now he’s a doctor. Just watching this brings back memories of the particular smell of lignum vitae.

Villy woodturning awesome, I’ve also heard lignum vitae is miserable to work with because it’s so freakin hard
As a kid I had heard stories about my uncle, a retired cop having night sticks made from this wood.
When I went to work, I tried to tell another machinist to slow down when working this wood. After it stalled the engine lath, he listened to me.
My Grandfather used this wood for turning crown green bowls, he started wood turning in 1929 and finished in 1980.

Absolutely gorgeous!!! I was just at the sawmill today and saw a piece of Lignum about that size and thought what could I make with that? You just gave me the idea.

This artwork is absolutely magnificent. In its simplicity and elegance its perfection. I’ve watched a lot of wood working and by far this block of wood has a life that didn’t die when taken from the tree. The rings shine through. You gave additional glory in its final day.

That's a great bowl you found in that piece of wood! At about 5:00 when I saw the outside of it mostly shaped, I thought, "I hope he keeps it square rather than cutting it down to a circle", and I'm glad to see you were thinking the same thing -- it really is lovely.

I have seen only one or two other turners use this type of wood. It never disappoints! I love how the grain comes out with a 3d look. Beautiful piece of work! Keep up the GREAT work!

If I understand it correctly. Lignum Vitae is used for bushings in ships where the shaft goes through the hull. That it's extremely hard. Never worked with it. I held a piece seems very dense. Great work!
While I dislike sharp edges and small bases generally, on this piece, they work. Suspect it's the glowing chatoyance of the wood, like a giant cat's eye. Those wide edges show off that quality very well...

I was at the shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin. They used lignin Vitae as a bushing on the drive shafts of the ore carriers. I was told it was so heavy it would not float.
John Manthey yeah some guy tell me it also use for boat bushings because of that
@@Villywoodworking it was used for the bearings on water mill wheels also.
The prop shaft on the first US built Nuclear powered sub (1955) used Lignum Vitae bearings. They are quiet, hold up in salt water and are self lubricating. Also no electrolisis from dis-similar metals. Some hydro power plants use them on turbines also. Cheers from Akron, Ohio
Beautiful bit of wood was it stabilised just noticed a bit of a sheen before you started I’ve been thinking about doing some stabilised pieces myself would be interested to hear your thoughts on what it’s like to work with
I think that's just how lignum vitae is; whatever it has in it that makes it heavy also makes it a bit shiny when sanded.
Amazing, and beautiful colour/grain but how did you get hold of it? I understand the tree is on CITES list?
It's in Appendix II of the CITES list, per Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CITES), which says that Appendix II contains "species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction, but may become so unless trade in specimens of such species is subject to strict regulation" and as such, "International trade in specimens of Appendix II species may be authorized by the granting of an export permit or re-export certificate."

The tree is beautiful! It's a pity the walls and top are a bit thick! And the finish is wonderful!

If you have ever turned this wood you might understand why he kept the dimensions the way he did. Either way, it’s all a matter of personal preference; personally I look at his piece and see balanced proportions for this design. A unique piece of functional art.

Hi Villy....that is an exceptionally fine piece of stock...if, as you comment, the wood is green, you will need to dry it slowly to prevent cracking....or did you mean it's green in color? Stay safe and stay healthy....best wishes.
Oh Villy, you did it now! Turned that magnificent piece of wood into a beauty of a bowl. It is real art what you have there !! Truth !! What strikes me most is how the end grains aren't seen - it looks like rings within rings. Great choice for the shape and finish. Love it my friend😃👍 Stay safe. -Mike😷
Did you not sand the outside? And what you went, sealer then abrasive paste? I’m trying to up my finish game and whatever you just did seemed really simple. Could you clarify how you finished the outside of this bowl? Awesome job by the way....👍❤️
Yeah I sand all the thing just not show on camera my routine for sanding is 120 grit to 400-600 grit then apply abrasive paste
You gonna have better results with a little tool for sanding then by hand 🤚

I cant imagine how much you had to sharpen your tools.. I know when I did some katalox bowls I was sharpening constantly and LV is harder than that. Gorgeous wood though.

Jade Rem i don’t use négative scrapper i just sand from 120 grit to 600 grit avec I live to use Yorkshire grit it’s a sanding paste and after I put hameshire sheen micro abrasive paste and it’s done

this is the densest wood on earth. 1.2 tons per cubic meter.
