    I use MuseScore! I've never met anyone else who uses either before. A lot of people say Finale is better but I still prefer MuseScore. It's so much easier for me to use.

      Carter Pompey I agree completely. All the arrangers and composers in my school use Musescore, though I only found out last week and noone else appears to realize it.

      been using Finale since 1986. Drives me CRAZY but it is the best.I DO use Sibelius and MuseScore, but they aren't as flexible or powerful. If you're a copyist - you're using Finale. (BTW I'm not a copyist - just a composer)

    I use MuseScore too and I love it! Much more user friendly than Finale, although less complex. It gets trickier when you need to write polyphonic music, adjusting the stems (is that the right word?) correctly is not always possible in MuseScore, but no biggie :). Just downloaded Piano DX, it's gonna be a great help! Thanks!

    I just found your channel. You're so relatable :) Thanks for the tips. I had a friend suggest MuseScore to me in college and even on though I was broke and using a very old computer at the time, it definitely got the job done and I found it to be fairly easy to use.

    Hello! I'm a composer and I used to use Musescore for my composing before I auditioned for a music school here in the Philippines (because I'm broke and obviously it's free!) But during my first semester, I shifted to Sibelius because I noticed that I'm the only composer here who still uses Musescore at that time hahahaha. Sibelius I should say is really the most intelligent and convenient music notation software. There are numerous things Sibelius can do that other softwares like Musescore and Finale can't. BUT: the playback of Sibelius can really crappy, specifically the strings.
    I like your channel, btw! :)

    I have MuseScore. I have actually used some scores from the MuseScore library with my band. I don't compose, but I like that I can reassign some parts in MuseScore so the music fits my band's needs. I've shown it to my director and he's impressed. I actually have it on my PC laptop, my Mac, my Windows tablet, and my Android phone.

    Thanks for making this video!!! I've been looking for apps like this and now I know where to find them!! I actually use Soundcorset Tuner & Metronome for my tuning and metronoming needs. It's free and has several different features.

  • @bclislife

    MuseScore 2.0 is now a thing!
    The instruments on it sound a lot more like the actual thing than a computer generated thing. Plus, there's now a search bar to find different instruments that aren't listed in the "common instruments" selections, though there are numerous other selections that likely contain the instrument you're looking for.
    I use musescore 2.0 to arrange music for my high school band, and we're playing a thing at our Christmas concert I arranged! :D life is so good.
    I have to quit rambling. I just love musescore 2.0 far too much tbh. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a cheaper finale.

    I'll 2nd insTuner as an amazing free tuning app. For a metronome though I recommend metrotuner, it's an amazingly robust free app: you can quickly move through tempo via tempo bar, point by point via +/- or even tap out a tempo, you can change the click tone, you can choose to have the button flash to the beat or even your phones flashlight strobe to the beat.

    • @jeannebouwman1970
      @jeannebouwman1970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also when pracricing you can go 50% tempo up to 100% tempo to practice slowly and then quickly

  • @kaiserthegreat

    TE Tuner. Has a metronome just lime tempo, but also a tuner you can set to your type of instrument, and even level settings depending on how good a player you are. Also comes with a pitch wheel, virtual keyboard, and an analysis tool that lets you record yourself and see how “on point” you are with your playing.

    Todoist is a great app, too! Syncs to everywhere. It's a great way to organize the bits of your life that are to-dos that really, actually need to become to-dones. I've been using it for a couple months and it's really helped me NOT let things fall through the cracks (as much).

    I have used musescore, finale, and Sibelius. Honestly they are all what you would expect but I find that musescore has a format that is a lot easier to play with for beginner composers, arrangers, or just musicians in general. Sibelius and Finale do seem to have a wider variety of settings for composing but the difference is honestly very small and would only be of use to an upper level composer or professional sound person. Musescore is great and I would recommend it to any and all musicians! Happy composing!

  • @Matt-no7gg
    @Matt-no7gg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't tried Finale or Sibelius, but MuseScore is awesome and definitely gets the job done for me. I used it to compose a piece for my high school band, and it treated me very well throughout the whole process (aside from a few crashes and running slowly at times, but that's to be expected with over 25 different parts, each 2-3 pages long, plus a 19 page score. If you just want to make something small for a few instruments, you should be good to go). I've recommended it to anyone who wants to compose music, whether it be my friends or folks my band director sends my way.

    I used Muse score for my GCSE compositions so you aren't the only one! :) Although haven't really got to use it since then cos my school didn't offer music at A level (only 2 of us picked it) so I went to another school simultaneously and they used sibelius but we got it free! :)

    A metronome that I recommend is Musical Lite. It's a piano playing app, but it does have a metronome section that I would DIE if I didn't have. You can have it count in quarter notes, eight notes, even triples in whatever tempo you want. It is so useful when I'm struggling with rhythms.

  • @emiel333
    @emiel333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    For tuning you can download the Boss guitar tuner for free (it's from Roland)
    Steinberg has a free and very accurate metronome app with different measures and tap tempo for free. Great video.

    • @emiel333
      @emiel333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steinberg's metronome is called Smart Click. Music Memo from Apple and Garageband are both free. Garageband is a DAW (duh) and Music Memo translates humming into a audio file with chords etc.

    Audacity is a good program to edit music or recordings. My GF and I love musescore. I especially love to export midi files and use them in a DAW program or in Piano booster (great PC program to learn to play keyboard or piano). Cleartune is indeed a great app, I use it a lot! Especially when I was making my own flutes from PVC and stainless steel.

  • @Nucifera8472
    @Nucifera8472 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using MuseScore for some time now, mostly for downloaded sheet music and listening to the midi because I am not very good at reading sheet music. And also for some basic editing if I like some of the songs in their library but can't play it otherwise.

    Thank you so much for MuseScore! Last night I had a few hours to kill, so I looked up some music theory videos and started learning. I think I learned more in 4 hours than in the 10 years of public and music school! Anyway, that was all fine and dandy, but I didn't actually know what to do with the info, but today I watched this video and figured "I might as well get it in case I need to write something down" and started playing around with it after installing it. Lo and behold, a few hours later, I somehow ended up with this: soundcloud.com/scubadog2000/rundown
    I figured it's not half bad for someone who barely knew what a time signature was last night! You may have just convinced me to go into music with this! Thank you again!

    Google drive is also like one note, i use it for school every day and all you need is an email and you're ready. you can also make spread sheets and drawings, and slideshow (like on power point). also like one note it syncs across all devices and it automatically saves. you should really look into it if you like the way google is setup.
    BTW I love you vids and i don't even play the flute, i play 7th grade percussion (marimba). also not sponsored by google, just really like the program

    Muses core is actually quite hard to use at first but once u get the hang of it it's really good. The only downsides are the sound they play for your instruments it's really soft and the instruments are not like really in balance like the piano is really soft as compared to the flute. Overall very useful haha

    So, I know this is a very old video... It's time to remake this video current... I say that because some of the apps are out dated (expired) and some have actually upgraded to be even better *IE: Musescore. I was a big fan of Finale, until I ran into this video back in the day (just three years old makes it outdated!) Anyway, I have become a bigger fan of Musescore since that time, because of the fact that with the upgrade (again, from the time that this video was made), most of the functions are free that you would have to pay for in Finale. However, I still don't like that I cannot layer notes in 4/4 time (unless the layered note is the same value): IE: Ballade Pour Adeline; Bar 20 you have a layered quarter note, and two runs of four 16th notes for a total of 8 16th notes before you have a quarter layered with two 16th notes and an 8th note (which the quarter note is for the same duration of the two 16th notes + one 8th note) also in bar 43, where you have a layered whole note fit in the same measure with a 16th rest and 7 16th notes if you try to enter these additional notes or layered notes in the same measure, the software automatically kicks out the prior notes. Now, I have no idea if this is true if you were to switch the Treble staff to a Grand staff if it would make a difference. I was only retyping the spots where I need practice, so I'm not reading the whole entire piece, as I have all of that, as Mozart said, "all in my head." But the trouble spots that I needed to practice I entered into Musescore on a Treble staff and that was what I have noticed. Other than that, I have made an entire ensemble of all the instruments I play, and I love the software, as Finale's free version won't allow you to put more than three instruments at a time! So that's my take away. If you're on an android phone, I have found that I LOVE the Bandmate Chromatic Tuner, as it shows exactly where your instruments lies on the staff. I had no clue that I was over tuning my Thai dulcimer. The instrument's lowest note is supposed to be an A2, and I kept trying to tune it at least at A4. I would keep snapping the strings. The strings are made of brass wire. So you can imagine when that hits your hand, it's not gonna feel good at all!!! I'm also a huge fan of AppyBuilder.com. They have all the different virtual fingerings for almost any instrument. I have downloaded, Clarinet, Sax and Flute. For a while I did have oboe... But, I don't own or play an oboe so I deleted that app to make way for other apps. Anyway, sorry for the rant. As I keep saying, perhaps I should make a video of my own and link this video in my video, or just head all my viewers your direction!!!

    I have Sibelius and and MuseScore and both have their pros and cons. Sibelius has more features. MuseScore is more user friendly and does less stupid things to irritate you to death. I mainly use MuseScore but have to use sibelius at work. You can export a MuseScore file and open it in Sibelius just fine and vice versa. My advise is just to use MuseScore.

    I use MuseScore =) its pretty good, easy to use and get around without needing a lot of tutorials and is free which is great for students like myself on a budget =) what i don't like about it is the quality of the playback. the playback quality on Finale NotePad is much better (also free) with the difference that the Finale NotePad has restrictions like only being able to use 8 staves (not great if you're orchestrating for full orchestra) and you cant save as an .mp3 file.

    I wasn't really a fan of MuseScore, Finale's way better. If you want free, try NoteFlight!

      Site singing is where you basically sight read music but you sing it (sight reading = playing music for first time not knowing it) Hope this answers your question
