    I fell in love with the high elves when I was first given their 4th edition book way back in middle school. They were my introduction to Warhammer and the reason I love it so much

    How about a video going through the magic items?
    I'd like to hear your opinions on them and you could recommend them for individual units/armies.
    Like you said, a Dark Elf General should really consider the SCEPTRE OF SOVEREIGNTY.

      Most magic items are not worth the cost but yes I can do that.

    It bothers me when the makers say they didn't want to make cav or monsters too powerful. Because heavy cavalry was key to basically every major battle up until the past 150 years. And in a world with dragons giants etc wouldn't you think they would be powerful? If monsters and some cav prices got reduced i think we would get much more varied lists.

    • @iainmstanding
      @iainmstanding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have proposed a price reduction for the most expensive units, such as the dragon rider. It may be adopted if it garners enough support.

      @@iainmstanding Other GW games could run in the different direction, where players only took the bare minimum of standard troops and then poured as much points as they could into one sledgehammer of a HQ section. Or games where other troops were just stopgaps and roadblocks to a monster or demon or superheavy tank.

  • @SusCalvin
    @SusCalvin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Other Warhammer games ran with lists and choices that made the "Herohammer" approach rational. GW would start to add special rules and bobs on top of heroes and great big monsters until an elite unit with one decked-out character or two had a chance to roll up a whole line of normal troops.
    I don't mind one or two monsters now and then. Part of the fun in Epic is to use huge weapon systems like titans alongside more conventional forces.

      WFRP elves were given some weird quirks about their memory. Elves "prune" their memories as time passes. Most stuff they have experienced is not considered worth remembering.
      It could result in elves mistakenly adressing people as an ancestor, or being unable to remember minor events last month.

  • @SusCalvin
    @SusCalvin 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    High elves were supposed to be masters of magic in WFB as well, and had a special high magic spell list. I can't recall what spells they had there, but the fancy elf magic spell-for-spell did not stand out that much compared to more specialized army spell lists.

    I've really enjoyed your videos and I'm interested in trying out Warmaster.
    Me and my friends have played warhammer in the past (and quite a bit of the fantasy rpg), but none of us have really played a game like this.
    I would like to play a few games before deciding which armies we would start investing in, so if you have any suggestions for a good starting army.
    You mentioned High Elves were very forgiving (because of their com10 general), so I'm thinking that would likely be a good choice, though you also mentioned that the Empire army was very default/had a little bit of everything, so maybe a high elf versus empire introduction would be the way to go?
    Interested to hear your and other people's thoughts.

      Yes, empire, high elves, chaos and orcs are all great for starting armies. You can print out proxy armies using paper markers on bases ordinarygaming.blogspot.com/p/warmaster-counters.html?fbclid=IwAR27QvDVqRooT3XEz95b4BKHrBNKqqLm7UAufEmSIhJbdnXilBBuSgfZBJs

    I think of getting into Warmaster in the future and made this 1000 pts HE army list. What do you think about it?:
    180 - 3 Spearmen
    150 - 2 Archers
    220 - 2 Silver Helms
    70 - 1 Giant Eagles
    180 - 1 General
    110 - 1 Hero
    - 1 Giant Eagle (20)
    - 1 Sword of Destruction (10)
    90 - 1 Wizard

    The High Elf general points cost is neither sensical nor thematic. It cannot be justified as the Dwarf general is identical in stats. We updated it to 155 pts which is in line with the actual command point cost of 30 per increment. I suspect the 25 point penalty was a poor attempt at trying to balance the Dark Elf general's rule which is thematic, but problematic since compulsory magic item purchases (Scepter of Sovereignty for 30 pts) are not fun. Our solution was to drop the Dark Elf general to 135 pts in line with a (+2 A/9 C 125 point) standard general but with a +10 penalty for the increased, albeit tenuous, command value. This allows the DE player to weigh the risk of not grabbing the SoS with picking up some other fun items.

    • @iainmstanding
      @iainmstanding  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This point of view would appear to be in the minority. The original cost of the high elf general was indeed 155 pts. This proved to be too good a combination with access to flyers and unlimited heavy cavalry. High elves were winning far more often than any other army. So the general was increased in value to recognise this.
      The dwarf army has no cavalry, therefore command 10 is not as powerful for them, therefore 155 is a fair cost for their general.
      The two other command 10 generals in the game have negative rules which justify their cost at 155 pts in combination with cavalry and flyers.
      You have to look at the cost of a unit or character in the context if the army and how they perform in combination to appreciate their true worth.
      Still, if you play high elves vs dark elves and want to change the points of the generals for your own games, you are free to do so.
      Why not let us know your findings with these new pts costs by posting some feedback on the experimental rules forum.

      @@iainmstanding Thank you for your generous, and measured response, as well as your excellent series. As I revisit my comment I realize how confrontational, and arrogant I must sound! My ithilmar shorts must have been chafing :) I offer my most humble apology. I also recognize you have a much more experienced insight into the contextual balancing of WR, and its earlier iterations than my table. Admittedly, the x-factor cost of synergy among unit types, or lack thereof, was not a key consideration on my end. I think it's because my ultimate goal for fun using WR is to eventually play a narrative campaign using 3d printed hex tiles in the same vein as WHF's Mighty Empires expansion from 2007! So excited lol. I am mostly fine with some asymmetry among some armies in that regards as the battles will invariably be between unequal forces, I suppose, but will certainly adjust if anyone involved is no longer having a good time. Cheers!

      @@Gladedancer In Rogue Trader it was more whimsical and fuzzy about which gear and models you could mix and match in a force. You could play skirmishes where a rogue trader and their entourage of random space elfs, leftover imperial guard and Bob the dwarf run into space vampires on some moon.
      Dwarfs are considered the weaker army in many other GW games. They are slow and more expensive than base human infantry with more limitations on cav. They were prone to artillery camping or only reacting to more mobile armies.
