Gabriel Kinney had dreams of becoming a pilot, but in August of 1943 he instead found himself attached to the 25th Infantry Division helping to "mop up" the remaining Japanese on Guadalcanal. Having gained some combat experience, Kinney then volunteered for a dangerous mission code name GALAHAD.
Officially named the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), the unit would famously become known as "Merrill's Marauders", named after the unit's charismatic leader Frank Merrill.
Merrill's Marauders operated in the lesser known China-Burma-India theater of the war and specialized in long range penetration special operations jungle warfare. The unit became famous for its deep-penetration missions behind Japanese lines, often engaging Japanese forces far superior in number.

They expected an 85% CASUALTY rate. The casualty rate ended up actually being even higher than that, but the death rate was nowhere near that amount.
A casualty is anyone that gets hurt or sick enough to need to leave the front lines and at least go to the hospital for a bit. Every person that's killed is added to that tally, but anyone that comes down with a bad flu or something is also counted as a casualty.
Their fighting was incredibly grueling and they had the odds very much stacked against them, but the vast majority of casualties were (and were expected to be) due to tropical diseases like scrub typhus (caused by mites, like Lyme disease) and dysentery from sharing water supplies with the Chinese National troops (who went to the bathroom in the water supply).

My cousin John Aid (r.i.p.) was a Marauder in WWII.
Right after Pearl Harbor he lied about his age & joined the Army. He completed Ranger School in 1942 and was with Merrill's Marauders for the entirety of the war. Being a Missouri farm boy he worked with the mules along with his radioman duties. He was nearly killed by a bayonet-weilding Japanese soldier but survived to serve post-WWII in both the Korean & Vietnam Wars.
Cousin John passed away a few years ago in Florida from battling illness brought on by his exposure to Agent Orange in Nam.
My Cousin John was my childhood hero after I first met him during the Vietnam War. When I was laid up in Martin Army Hospital (Ft. Benning) during the 1st Gulf War, John would phone me & we'd chat and he would tell me stories about his wartime experiences.

my great uncle fought as a fighter pilot for the RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force) and he was stationed in new caledonia and papua new guinea. Its crazy to think they could of been in the same place at the same time, sadly my uncle was killed in an accident after coming back from a straffing/bombing run on japanese postions. When he was landing another plane landed on top of him and he was killed, im super lucky to have 5 pictures of him over there and also witness accounts of what went down, very sad story as he trained to become a pilot which lasted close to 3 years and then was killed 3 weeks into his deployment. He was 21 yo, we just dont make men like them anymore. Awesome story and i thank you for you service sir.

He had tremendous respect for those guys, and asked if he could be assigned to Thailand/Burma/India to fly support for them. He was declined because (so he believed) the British were in charge of air support in that area, and they preferred their own pilots. In any case, he continued to respect those guys till he died in 1979. The men (and women) who fought in that era are a tremendous gift to us today. He did, however, write a roughly 20-page summary of it to "have it in the record," as he put it. There are two things I remember most from it - first, the amount of credit he gave to the Japanese-American translators that accompanied the unit. Second, how sick they all were. They were pretty much all sick with something or other - usually dysentery - and by the time the last unit was over and the unit had disbanded, he looked like a walking skeleton. No idea how they were even able to fight under conditions like that.

Wow, his unit was so rogue that it is not recognized by its own government. Righteous cause gave people the will. I hope he wasnt saying that benefits were denied survivors????

How? I just retired two years ago after 24 years of service in the Marine Corps and Navy. My service was not honorable? Let me remind you that segregation was still in full effect back then and we interned American citizens in concentration camps. Who's honor are you talking about?
