The older I get, you realise more of the debt of gratitude we owe every man and women who lost their lives in Normandy, and the torment the survivors have had to live with since. The first time I heard this song I was driving my work van on the A1 and within 2 minutes I was in tears, I will never forget this song and what it represents. Thank you Jim Radford for writing such a song to touch our hearts.
One thing is for sure that we can all agree upon, our military men and women are heroes to us all. They put their lives on the line for us every day........and for that, I am eternally grateful. ❤️
Amen. Brought me to tears as well. The sacrifice, setting aside your hopes and dreams, to do what had to be done. And the sacrifice of those who survived, knowing they would carry the burden the rest of their life. The greatest generation. God bless them and never forget.
Wow, you were only 15-years old at the time. Thank you and your courageous generation for freeing the world of evil. When I hear this beautiful and realistic song, I feel like I am one of the soldiers in the boat sailing to the Normandy beach. I love the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' because it puts you on the beach in battle and it makes you feel like you are one of the soldiers. This song does exactly the same thing, it puts you in the boat with those brave heroes. God bless you!
Just heard you on LBC Radio Jim. What an amazing, brave and outstanding human being you are. I love your song and these tears in my eyes are because you have such an extraordinary soul. The World should be full of Jim Radford’s. God bless you Jim.
in the run up to D Day quite a number of British Tommys i understand lost their lives mostly by drowning while they was doing the training for it. the UK goverment at the time covered the accidents up to stop the Germans hearing about it. as a result the accidents have only recently come to light
I am eternally grateful to all our men and women who fought, sacrificed, and many times have lost their lives fighting to protect our nation and its people. #NeverForget
Powerful lyrics about a day that still resonates in the present generation. If it happened today would things be the same? Unfortunately no. The current generation are pampered and comfortable. The 20 year olds of today couldnt face the horrors that the men of '44 did. Those men willingly sacrificed themselves for a better future. Todays generation are not fit to lace the boots of those heros.
I’ll say a fearful amen … I say fearful because if hitler was alive today , we’d just be an episode from The Man in the High Castle and we’d be part of the greater nazi region . There would be no one to fight back , they’d capitulate without thinking twice ..
@@benking4367 The fact that you said "amen" tells me that you're putting your trust in the highest. Living in today's world that's a very important thing. Ultimately God is our only hope.
Jim u fukin legend wat a song thankyou so much for your service im. An ex serviceman i carnt imagine wat horrors u chaps faced.. Stand at ease sir........ BSM BATTY
We have so much to owe you Jim and your generation but no words will ever describe my thanks for my freedom my kids freedom and there kids and it’s all down to you and your comrades (brothers in arms) but if it’s any recollection......... thank you for your service and my freedom sir I salute you
In the cold grey light of the sixth of June, in the year of '44 The Empire Larch sailed out from Poole to join with thousands more The largest fleet the world had seen, we sailed in close array And we set our course for Normandy at the dawning of the day There was not one man in all our crew but knew what lay in store For we had waited for that day through five long years of war We knew that many would not return, but all our hearts were true For we were bound for Normandy where we had a job to do Now, the Empire Larch was a deep-sea tug with a crew of 33 And I was just the galley boy on my first trip to sea I little thought when I left home of the dreadful sights I'd see But I came to manhood on the day that I first saw Normandy At Arromanches, off the beach of Gold, 'neath the rockets' deadly glare We towed our blockships into place, and we built a harbour there 'Mid shot and shell, we built it well, as history does agree While brave men died in the swirling tide on the shores of Normandy For every hero's name that's known, a thousand died as well On stakes and wires their bodies hung, rocked in the ocean's swell And many a mother wept that day for the sons they'd loved so well Men who cracked a joke and cadged a smoke as they stormed the gates of hell As the years pass by, I can still recall the men I saw that day Who died upon that blood-soaked sand where now sweet children play And those of you who were unborn, who've lived in liberty Remember those who made it so on the shores of Normandy
He stood for us and all other European nations under the Nazi jackboot, the stories I heard from him growing up were enough to make you weep, for me he was just my grandad Jim. We will always love and cherish you and this son lives on as a warning and remembrance of what can happen when you trust in the wrong leader, rest easy sailor, you earned it many times over!
@Deathcoldan You truly have no life replying negatively to all these beautiful and graceful comments take your stupid poisonous thinking somewhere else and be real and commend the man for living through such a tragedy that thousands of others did too just to let you be able to post your hateful diatribes online freely and without policing and communism ruining our right to be free thinking people so piss off you twat and respect the facts! And the truth that so many died for you to exist is one thing I could see a veteran saying why they feel dissatisfied with what they did in WW2
75 years ago. The American and British youth charged machine gun nest knowing they would more than likely die, all in the name of freedom. Today American and British youths would gladly give up their freedoms for anything.
Does anyone know of a legal way to buy this song? I heard it on the radio last summer and I cannot find it on iTunes, Amazon or any of the others. Apparently it was a chart-topping single. Where? No, I don't want to buy the sheet music. I want an actual MP3 download that I can listen to. This man gave up his childhood to give us freedom, and I can't even pay the 79 pence to hear him tell his tale through song. And it is such a beautiful song! It's honestly brought me close to tears a couple of times. If it's only available here on TH-cam, then that's a shame.
This wonderful man died at 2 am on the 6th November 2020. Farewell my friend, your memory will on in my mind until my time is up too.
