  • HOOTY-HOO !! The hooters have landed on this very exciting second installment of our 19th century dump in the sewer trench video series! I mean, when you're digging in new 1890s stuff, who gives a hoot, right ?? Wrong !! The Owl Drug Company was founded in 1892 for the express purpose of making digging in 90s crap kind of exciting...and MAN, the Great Owl Spirits did NOT disappoint us today. Watch BottleNed & Privy Pokin' Paige get tarred & feathered while prying out history deep below the sidewalks in an incredibly-preserved Late Victorian Era trash dump, eventually making some bucket list finds. You can only get this kind of entertainment here people! And you won't even need your bird-watching binoculars to see some of the finest-looking owls ever captured on camera emerge from a long hibernation !!!
    #bottledigging #mudlarking #mudlarkingfinds
    BottleNed has made this his full-time job. My objective is to share the excitement, dangers, & historical information gained from my digging adventures for everyone to enjoy & learn from. But I need some serious help paying basic bills along the way. Please click this link & consider becoming a Patron. Even $5/month helps !! Thank You !!

    UPDATE! Special additional info on the history of the term soda "pop" thanks to @robbybobby6466 !!
    The first known reference of the term “Pop”, as referring to a beverage, was in 1812 in a letter written by English poet Robert Southey. In this letter, he also explains the term’s origin: “Called on A. Harrison and found he was at Carlisle, but that we were expected to supper; excused ourselves on the necessity of eating at the inn; supped there upon trout and roast foul, drank some most admirable cyder, and a new manufactory of a nectar, between soda-water and ginger-beer, and called pop, because ‘pop goes the cork’ when it is drawn, and pop you would go off too, if you drank too much of it.”

    I love your passion for the bottles Ned. I’m exactly the same. Especially when (in another video) you said about the ‘thought’ that went through a persons head that is long dead now, I always feel the same when I’m digging and come across an old pot or pail with smaller things inside it- someone in a certain moment of time, all those years ago, had the thought to do that, and now YOU are connected to that persons thought across time! It’s just awesome. Bottles are amazing. I’ve collected since I was 11 yrs old. 👍🇬🇧

    Bro, I get the whole psyching out your opponent thing, I do it every time, but we both know Paige is just too smart to fall for it! As to the green swirling, maybe it's some residual green glass on the end of the blowpipe?, I've got a hutch I dug here on the west coast, same time frame and the green swirl goes most of the way down the bott, so definitely IN the glass, who knows, I just know it's always cool to find botts like that, makes them even more unique! Another cool vid Ned & Paige!! 👍

    • @BottleNed
      @BottleNed  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha Paige definitely isn’t falling for it and that killer teal soda owl remains in limbo until we dig something else just as cool.
      Yeah something about western early 90s hutches and green swirls starting in the top & sometimes traveling down the whole bott ! Definitely in the glass…

Alot of the embossed pharmacy bottles dug here from the late 19th are Whitall Tatum Co. Produced. W.T.CO was one of the first glass houses I learned about.

      Lol you know I love me some eastern bott. Out here, if the pharms have the WT on them, you’re digging a mid 80s layer or newer. The early pharms have smooth bases or abbreviations of earlier glass works

      I used to dig in an area east of the Concord Naval Weapons Station, Now Port Chicago, between Martinez and there in an area now labeled as the Point Edith Wildlife Area. Rumor had it that a lot of the 1906 SF earthquake debris was dumped there. Found many broken Colbalt Blue Owl poisons strung about old pits from previous diggers. Had to go at low tide since we were digging down about 3 feet into the mud. Doubt you can get access there anymore, but might still be worth a look. I can pinpoint if interested.
