This is one of the rare Woody Allen films that never ever gets old. I'm sure I've seen it more than any other Allen film at that. Only Annie Hall and Crimes and Misdemeanors do I also place in this exalted category.
"I wanna go back to sleep! If I don't get at least six hundred years, I'm grouchy all day!" "I knew it was too good to be true. I parked right near the hospital!" Just what I like in a good movie comedy: one funny line and reference after another and each scene setting up the reasons for the subsequent jokes in the next. Brilliant. And the wonderful jazz musical soundtrack was perfect and I do think it makes sense from a narrative point of view. The main character was an amateur jazz player in his old life (on days off from his vegetarian deli, I imagine), just like Woody Allen was in his real life. It was his (and our) time impinging cinematically and ironically onto his new time in the future. And it was also indicating musically the silent comedy movie style the film was emulating and that sort of jazz music was indeed from that era. And it was just so much fun.
This was the first time I ever saw a Woody Allen movie. This past year my father showed me his other best films like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and so many more. Woody Allen is one of my favorite filmmakers. Every time I watch this film it makes me think how this film predicts the future.
@@paulaharrisbaca4851 yeah but its not easy being a woody allen fan when being judged. I can separate the art from the artists but it does depend on the artist.
Well, it’s nearly 50 years in the future and most Americans have embraced a diet rich in saturated fat. Woody’s a prophet. Life extension research on the benefits of tobacco aren’t going so well though. Most test subjects still die rather horribly.
'Bananas',has a lot of now obscure references that many of us grew up with in 1971/72 but are still funny i.e. Howard Cosell calling the play by play.of the assassination of El Presidente of San Marco..m
This scene is almost prophetic, given that research is now indicating saturated fat may not be bad for us after all, and that sugar is the main dietary culprit behind heart disease and obesity. I don't think cream pies, hot fudge, or smoking will ever be vindicated, but deep fat and steak are well on their way.
And who is Dr. McGregor? What are his credentials? Why don't you take your "veganism is healthier" claim and tell that to the French, Masai, Inuit, Amish, Swiss, Dutch, or Norwegians, all of whom have thrived on saturated fat with very little obesity or heart disease at all.

There was a time when people thought the world was flat and that the sun rotated around the Earth. Anyone who suggested otherwise was laughed off as crazy and uneducated, but eventually, these theories were proven wrong. Albert Einstein was laughed off as a lunatic when he first proposed the theory of relativity, but he was later proven to be right. The same thing is happening now to vegetarianism and low-fat dieting. Grain, soybean, and vegetable oil producers have spent millions of dollars slandering butter, eggs, red meat, and dairy, based on outdated and discredited research. They have destroyed the livelihoods of countless farmers and ranchers and caused obesity to skyrocket, all in defense of a lie. Americans are now eating less saturated fat than ever before, but our rates of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, etc. keep going up.
+experiment54 High Fructose Corn syrup IS the major culprit in the obesity epidemic. It blocks the action of Leptin which makes it as addictive as heroin. Sucrose which was used previously does not carry the same problem. HFCS is used in almost all processed food because of the way it benefits food manufacturers, at the cost of our health. Why don 't you know this?
Meat is still very strongly linked to cancer and heart disease in humans. The keto diet is another temporary weight loss fad that can do long-term damage. The types of eyes we have, our jaw, teeth, digestive system and blood chemistry are all those of plant eaters. We've adapted to meat but we did not evolve into carnivores.
@@JackF99 Keto long term damage? You know keto long term is generally lots of vegetables (definitely more then avg western population, unless u get lot of meat instead of veg)?
"Resistors to mind reprogramming will be exterminated for the good of the state." Woody: "What kind of government do you guys got here? This is worse than California!"
I know where that house is. I was hitching and saw it and commented that "that house looks like the house in a Woody Allen film." The driver told me that "that's it." Or words to that effect.
well, you're going to die young then..unless you mean the guys in the movie..if you mean present day real life dieticians you will die young..these guys were on the money all the way to tobacco..which is healthy to consume
The key with smoking is it displaces eating sugar and bad oils in many individuals and many individuals stay very thin because of that. Non-filtered cigarettes are actually better for you. A famous naturopath once said that as a doctor he has seen old drunks and old smokers but never old obese people. He hated smoking and alcohol but overweight no matter how you got there is the worst.
True story, I saw a 4 foot tall genetically modified, living chicken at Fort Diedrick Maryland. But I signed something saying I would never talk about it.
This was a great movie. I remember seeing it on TV when I was child and it stuck with me ever since. The only thing that they got wrong was that it wasn't tobacco, it was pot that was good for you.
+fywacia Exactly. I laugh at how pot smokers try to rationalize their behavior by saying it's good for you. This film was released during the counterculture era, so I'm a little surprised that they didn't use weed in this scene.
+HotWax93 Well in regard to pot, it's good for you if you need it. If you don't then the minor issues with it can be a problem. But back during the counter culture era the government and the media had covered up as much as they could about cannabis being a medicine. The narrative back then was that cannabis was an extremely dangerous, deadly, and highly addictive drug, so nobody would have gotten the joke. Of course the joke has to do with the constant contradictions by the medical establishment which is corrupted by the Rockefeller family that used Standard Oil money to create a for profit medical system back at the turn of the century. A system focused on treating the symptoms rather then curing the problem. The high fat vs low fat diet is another example of the insanity. Woody Allen was great at creating the thinking person's comedy. Intellectual comedy is something that seems to have gone extinct because the public doesn't seem to be capable of appreciating it anymore.
+fywacia With you all the way. Unfortunately many people don't learn these things until they come down with a serious disorder that is not addressed by their local medics.
+Red Pill Junkie I love to see how desperate vegetarians get when they grasp at straws trying to explain away all the evidence that contradicts their preconceived notions. Ancel Keys and his junk science has sentenced 2-3 generations of Americans to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and premature death by telling them to avoid meat and dairy.
Doctor: "Resistors to mind reprogramming will be exterminated for the good of the state." Miles: "What kind of government you guys got here? This is worse than California."
When Woody finds out what is happening in the future, it makes me think of how my reaction would've been in 2000 if you had shown me what happened after they got started teaching 7 year olds about the "Genderbread Man" in 2020 I would've been totally appalled. I would've gone stiff as a board and fallen flat on my face.
Well they're partially right steak is very good for you and the fats are what your body needs. They are wrong about pies and fudge the sugar is horrible to your health.
“Precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true” one of my favorite lines in the movie!
Imagine if she substituted margarine instead of cream pies
