That is the way Argentina should have played. In this way Argentina played in 2015 and turned out to be a very exciting team to watch. Argentina in the last 20 years developed a sleight of hand, which we seek to have for 100 years. And we made it in 2015. But since then, everything went wrong. Diaz Bonilla, the jaguar fly half, chosen one of the best in super rugby, was not even called to the team. Hopefully things are done better, human material is plenty.

Very unfortunate for Argentina to be a man down with only a quarter of the game gone. Not criticising the decision, but when big guys tackle players who dip down to take the hit it can be difficult not to have this sort of incident. It spoilt the game for both sides, which makes me wonder if we cannot have an intermediate penalty, perhaps twenty minutes in the bin if there are no injuries from the clash. Glad England won, thought Argentina fought well in the circumstances.

    • @ivorbiggun710
      @ivorbiggun710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The Argentinian made absolutely no effort to tackle correctly. Just shoulder to the neck/head and no attempt to use the arms. Farrell wasn't even dipping really. Red card. I agree that it's a shame that if a player is sent off because of a bad or borderline decision, Sam Warburton's departure in 2011 being a case in point, because it pretty much decides the game but this sort of dangerous behaviour has to be stamped out so, for me, a red card has to given. Otherwise players would be trying to get away with it all the time.

@@ivorbiggun710 I disagree completely, I think Farrell was falling, I think that Lavanini's tackle technique was perfectly legitimate and that if the contact had been to the shoulder of chest we would all be applauding him for an excellent tackle. The ONLY dodgy thing about the tackle was the point of contact and yes, perhaps he should have been carded for that but I think a yellow card was in order.
Now for a bit of saltiness.... How is it that Lavanini can be red carded for that, but Joe Moody can shoulder charge Malcolm Marx in the head and not even get cited? Moody used exactly the same tuck-the-elbow-and-lead-with-the-shoulder technique that both SBW and Scott Barrett got red carded for, but is somehow untouchable at a tournament where the officials have said that they will be extremely tough on head contact?

    • @mnnh1
      @mnnh1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Karma The head contact rule is reasonable rule because it is now recognised how just how damaging head injuries can be. The problem is the sanction of straight red which is disproportionate and needs to be revised to allow for mitigation such as a player falling or ducking their head, in which case head contact may be unavoidable for the tackler. The sanction in these instances should be a binning at most . So yeah. I think you’re spot on. Can’t comment on Moody -Marx though as not seen it.

Red card a little harsh given that Farrell ducked his head at last second and there was a clear attempt to use both arms. It ended the game as a contest. Should have been a binning at most. It cannot just be ‘any contact with the head is straight red’ because there will always be mitigation. Some discretion is in order. If a player lowers their head/body at the last moment and you’ve already committed to the tackle then contact with his head is often unavoidable. That should be a yellow and not a red.

    • @xdaniels13

@@mnnh1 it is strict out red card when it is a small rubgy national, look at all the red cards and yellow cards... red cards = Argentina, Canada, USA yellow card = Australia, All blacks, southafrica. What can the tackler can do in those moments? you are already committed to the tackle.

And here comes my can of worms again....
I do not believe that the tackle warranted a red, because in my opinion, Farrrell was certainly falling and the tackle was not a shoulder charge as we have seen from some players in the RWC so far. It was an accidental contact with the head but there was a definite legitimate tackle technique used with arms going for the wrap. Now, if you want to red card this play then fine, but then you need to go back and cite Joe Moody for a far worse hit on Malcolm Marx in the NZ v SA game for a shoulder charge to the head. Why only the Argentinian, but the New Zealander gets free reign?
On a side note, in the context of this hit on Farrell, the rules should include a mandatory HIA for Farrell. I know it seems unfair to send the victim off the field, but careers are ended and long term damage done by head injuries and it is the clever thing to do.

Yo no nací ayer.

I felt that the red card was too extreme. Yes ref need to protect the players but this red card ruined what could have been a good game of rugby. It's very clear that the player didn't intentionally use his shoulder to hit the attacking players head. They both went down into contact and the Argentine player did try wrap his arm, and it was a lock tackling a fly half. Rugby is a contact sport so there will be many occasions when mistakes are made by players, the margins for error are extremely small. The ref needs to weight this up and consider whether red carding player 20 minutes into a game is really justified because in this case it wasn't, it destroyed they next hour of the game and England were clearly going to win because of it. Yellow card yes, red card was not justified. Spectators will lose interest in watching games if ref are continually handing out red cards and giving a clear advantage to a team by doing so, I know he didn't do it purposely but it did give a major advantage to England. I felt the game was over when it happened because I knew England would win against 14 and with over an hour to go. The TV ref is great, and needs to be used often, but he should also weight up the pros and cons of red carding a player against ruining a good game of rugby. Farrel was hit in the head, it's so ironical because Farrel gets away with extremely dangerous tackling regularly, this also raises the point of refs being consistent. In the Samoa Japan game that followed there was also some bad calls. World Rugby must sort this out. Because spectators will lose interest and players will eventually be confused about what is allowed or disallowed while tackling which will also ruin the game.

You are defending one of the dirtiest and most carded players in Argentinian rugby history... Doesn't matter whether he meant to hit his head or not, the fact is he did and he was nowhere near as low as he could have gone. He could easily have dropped his shoulder further but didn't make the effort to because he was trying to hit at chest height. He got it wrong and he faces the consequences.

@@ragerancher You yourself admit that he was tying to hit at chest height and got it wrong. It was a legitimate tackle technique that ended up 6 inches too high, that is all. The fact that he is the most carded blah blah actually has zero effect on the decision because you cannot penalise a player for his record - Dylan Hartley would have been red carded before running onto the field if that were the case.

    • @ragerancher
      @ragerancher 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Karma-qt4ji you clearly haven't thought that through have you? The fact that he intended to hit Farrell in the chest isn't important, what is important is that he actually hits him in the face. Unless you want to sit there and say the only dangerous play that should be penalised is that with clear intent, the way the laws work is players are punished based on the result with intent only allowing mitigation. The fact he tried to take Farrell high on his chest is why there is no mitigation, he could have gone lower but made the choice not to. His choice to tackle at the top of the legal height exposed him to the greater risk of a high sit if he got it wrong, which he did. Had he gone lower and still got a high shot, as happened to Watson against Tonga, then it wouldn't have mattered as he clearly made every effort to go low. Lavanini made NO effort to go low, he was trying to hit Farrell as high as legally possible and he fucked it up. He made NO effort to pull out of it or correct it so that's why there is no mitigation. Red card.
