- They have a saying now in Russia: “Instagram does not work without a VPN, and the whole Internet does not work with it (VPN).”
For many years, the Russian government has been waging a domestic war against anti-censorship tools and outside narratives.
It began with blocking opposition groups after anti-Putin protests from 2011-2013. They passed legislation so that they could block websites, journals, anything that presented a narrative the government didn’t like.
This legal framework has progressively expanded, and it now targets tools like VPNs, Tor, and other applications that could allow Russian citizens to circumvent censorship and access information that hasn’t been greenlit by the Russian government. Any companies that want to operate in Russia have to obey these legal structures, even Google. And the list of blocked applications and media outlets keeps growing.
This is important to realize about wars, specifically information wars. A government’s information war doesn't just target the citizens of other (enemy) nations: they also target their own citizens, with varying degrees of intensity. All governments do this- and, just like with marketing, the moment we think we as citizens aren’t being affected, is precisely the moment we become vulnerable to propaganda.
