- Should the U.S. Navy name a future Ford-class carrier after President Barack Obama?
Since the 1990s, most of America’s aircraft carriers have been named after U.S. presidents, save for the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). Thus far, out of the planned ten-carrier Ford-class, the Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and the John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) are named after presidents, but CVN-80 will follow the long tradition of using the name Enterprise. The next carrier after Enterprise, CVN-81, will likely be revert to the convention of naming carriers after presidents. Indeed, there is a case to be made for naming the ship USS Barack Obama .

CVN81 will be named USS Doris Miller. He was an African American Navy cook that manned a .50 cal. machine gun to defend his ship during the attack on Pearl Harbor and saved several lives. 👍
Was killed serving on an escort carrier during the invasion of Makin in the Gilbert Islands when the ship blew up, their were very few survivors! The ship he served on during the attack on Pearl Harbor was the USS West Virginia, a battleship.

Every person that has won the medal of honor should be before that guy though, especially if it was posthumously which most of them are. But of course just because he was black and we live in this mega woke society where you get either accolades or criticism depending on your skin color, he will probably be chosen before the medal of honor recipients. @LactoseTheIntolerant I think theres less than 5 presidents out there who deserve a carrier named after them. Trump, Biden, Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Reagan are all near the bottom half of the list. The very bottom is andrew Jackson, then Trump, then Johnson, and so on and so forth.

There already is a USS Wasp, LHD-1. Hornet would be a good one, they should name one of the America class LHAs the Hornet. I'm glad that the name USS America was used again and is also the name of a new class of ships. I was on the previous USS America CV-66. It was my first ship.

I like a lot of the other names mentioned here. We have used older ship names in the past. I'm in favor of names like Lexington, Benjamin Franklin, Yorktown, or Bonhomme Richard. It's too bad we can't use USS Constitution, but she is still on the active roles. If we are going to stick with Presidents then we should go back to the first one who has not a ship named him and start there and work forward. And not skip one until we get to the end of the list. By that time they all should be long dead.
It's named after the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee during the Civil War not Benjamin Franklin. All the early carriers were named after famous prior ships or battles. Should have kept it that way. Politicizing ships ... how stupid is that

Name it after a World War 2 aircraft carrier. I can think of several names like Lexinngton, York Town, Hornet, but not after Obama. He did his best to reduce the Military to pre World War 2 strength.
