For those who want to play real baroque solo repertoire, but aren't advanced enough for Bach and Telemann, I can highly recommend "The Genteel Companion" by Humphrey Salter, 1683, published by Moeck. It's easy stuff, but really has the character of baroque solos (as opposed to folk dances). Plus, it was actually written for amateur recorder players. It's what got me hooked on playing baroque recorder years ago.
YES !! - This is exactly the video I wanted from you - my favourite period for the Recorder is the Baroque period and I've been looking for some books on this subject so this video is a Treat.
Ah brilliant!
I love your demonstrations, the love of the tune is apparent in you!
Great presentation, fascinating musical history. Thank you!
Great video as always Sarah. Ordered the baroque solo book straight away, and it arrived today. What a wonderful selection of music - I'm going to be busy for a while... 😊
And may I just add here that if anyone is ever looking for any sort of classical music arranged for the recorder (any size) that they can't find anywhere else, I own an Etsy shop named Pine Tree Piper where I arrange classical, traditional, and hymns for recorder and tin whistle. I absolutely take requests and commissions! Check it out!
Yes do!
Awww thanks, Sarah! 😊
Such beautiful playing 😻
I really appreciate how you make this fun. What a great intro to some really nice music. Its also cool to see how you share your passion for this music its definitely contagious.
❤️❤️
I bought the baroque solo book several years ago on your recommendation, and agree with all of the good things you said about it. Glad you mentioned the excellent solo books by Eric Haas. His three alto duet books are wonderful too.
I bought that baroque solo book but I still cant play much from it 3 years in. I can now scratch the surface though! Now I play lots of baroque transverse flute, too. Love that Quantz flute book.
Ooh it’s a great book isn’t it!
Lovely! I've played both the Marais and the Telemann fantasias as an oboist.
Ohh I bet they sound gorgeous on oboe!
So much fun to watch!!
Wonderful post---always such good advice and suggestions! Thank you!
Complimenti per il video. Bravissima come sempre nel padroneggiare i flauti.
Ottimi i libri che pubblicizzi.
Alcuni sono noti e vale il tempo per studiarli. ❤
i love you sarah! thank you for your channel
love 'Drunken Dance', good warm up on aulos grenser in keys d & e too, wd like to hear in written key on simple hautboy
Thank you, Sarah.
Thank you, Sarah. Perfectly timed - I've been thinking that I need some early music, not for solo recorder, but for a recorder consort, and that last book looks just the thing.
Awesome!!!
Thanks for this video! These pieces will be really useful to show off to my friends. Also a suggestion for a recorder review, can you do the Aulos 533B bass recorder please?
Thanks for the suggestion!
Please remind me what gorgeous instrument you’re playing gorgeously ?
thinking of coming over to team Recorder so I can play something when I'm having a bad lip day on trumpet. btw if it hasn't been done yet that Allemande would sound amazing
on a picc trumpet!
Hi! Thanks for this wonderful video! Any materials aimed at solo soprano playing?
Interesting. The first collection sounded familiar. I think it is also published (or was years ago) by Barenreiter (BA 8259.) They call it 'Plaisir Musicale' and, just checked, the introduction is in German and French, not English. It is by Bernard Thomas, as you say, and my copy has discoloured page edges due to lots of use over many years. Good collection. I will look for the others you mention - thanks!
Nice sist i'm from Indonesian
Know your heroes" - I haven't met you yet, my idol 😍
If we play the Telemann fantasias in a voice flute with the same fingering, we get the original tune?
Yes, it will just sound a minor third lower than alto- lovely 😌
Thanks, have you ever tried Toyama Musical Instrument AULOS Symphony Bass Recorder Baroque ?
Hi, can I know what type of wood the alto flute you play in this video is made of? Is it Rosewood by any chance?
Thank you
Baroque Solo Book *purr* played by Sarah *double purr* my copy is kind of crumbling too.
How can I spend a month learning from this amazing player!?!!
The recorder is an underrated instrument. According to AI, the flute provides a wider range and greater sound projection, but I still love how accessible the recorder is for millions of children.
And adults too I might add
1:25 .... How do I know magnificent piece when I hear it? goosebumps

I hope someone can help me. I'm returning to playing recorder after many years. In the meanwhile, I had a neck injury and my hands now shake somewhat. I'm fine with all the first six holes, but I am struggling with the double holes. Does anyone know of a specific video anywhere that can give me specific exercises ro help with this? Thank you ahead of time.
why pieces for flute must be transposed to the recorder?
can't i just use an tenor recorder? the lower note is the same C as the flute
Yeah you could use tenor. Alto was just the most popular size during the baroque period if I recall correctly.
thanks! i'm still learning C recorders, don't know how to play transposed to alto@@mantistoboggan2676
The lowest note on a baroque traverso is D, not C (or B natural as variant foot) like modern Boehm flute.
Hence like a voiceflute recorder.
As the range of the traverso is much bigger than a recorder, a tenor will be off the upper range in some places.

Love so much that the comments often answer my questions without having asked at all. ♡ Shows how much we, the very interrested followers of Sarah, have the same things in our mind.
I didnt know I had the "Solo book" as the title is not directly translated in my language but when you started playing you 're favourites, "wait these are my favourites too" . a short research later: ah well it is the same book😅
What is the title of your version, by which publisher?
Ahh amazing!
Hey, anyone have a good supplier for Canada for this kind of stuff? Don't want to pay exorbitant import/shipping fees.
You could check the Early Music Shop of Boston MA? It’s also the Von Huene workshop.

Until I can find a music partner I'll have
to play solo for the time being
the meaning of gay i learned when i was a kid: lighthearted and carefree.
Like deployed 👍
Sarah, you have probably mentioned this before, but please tell us which recorder you are playing this video…maker, pitch etc?
many thanks….
And here goes away the tenor again, this time because we cannot see the fingers 🙄
"c minor: gay"
Me a gay: excuse me,😃WUT?
Welcome to the world of baroque rhetoric 😂
@@Team_Recorder 😂😂😂 sounds lovely tho! Great to see all these amazing resources in one video! ❤️
Hi, Sarah. So wonderful, this video. I guess I'm probably a bit late to the party to get a reply from you (I know how busy you are!) But on the off chance, when you say "intermediate players" how would you express that in terms of ABRSM performance exam grades/levels? Is 4 not quite there, yet, for example? [Asking for a friend. 🤣] Thank you! 🏳🌈⚧🏳⚧💖
Good question Austin! So I’d say the Baroque solo book here is mostly grade 6+ and much of it 8+, with a few movements that are lower. The solo books by Eric Haas are more varied- definitely a little of material playable for around grade 4!
@@Team_Recorder Thank you, Sarah. That's so lovely of you to reply! So, I'm not ready for this yet. But on the positive side, you could say I'm halfway there! 💖🏳️🌈
