- An absolute genius piece of comedy (From 90's Comedian, the best stand up show ever!). Stewart Lee decides the first rule of comedy (that the fault of a failed joke falls on the teller) doesn't apply to him. Sometimes it's the fault of the audience
I love the deliberate cut aways to very unimpressed looking audience members
I imagine that some of the unimpressed looking ones are internally agreeing the fuck out of it
There's something genius about complaining about one side of the audience for not laughing, then complaining to the otherside for laughing.

The phrase "dumbing down" has been around for decades now. A society should progress and evolve. The fact that more people don't "get" Stewart Lee (I don't mean like him him, but understand him), proves my point. The lack of critical thinking and understanding of irony, literary references and general abstract absurdity, just prove that point

Lee is the master. he's been doing this year round form a quarter of a century. I estimate that to be about ten thousand gigs. He's not going to be phased by some sullen face in the front row wishing she'd gone to see Michael McIintyre ... because he is safe and you don't need to think. I've seen Lee do this 'divide and conquer' thing several times. But only when he does spot a pocket of 'unbelievers' and in dividing the room he manages to create great segregation. It is genius but it takes real guts

I often wonder when they pan to the audience and without failure there's some version of the sullen woman in the jumper what that person thought they were going to see? I'm guessing when they suddenly find out it's not a reprisal of Fist of Fun or TMWRNJ material they are deeply dissapointed.

Looking at the comments - are people aware that the on-stage persona isn't the person? Losing the audience on purpose and getting them back is a strategy only used by 2 other stand ups I've come across in the last 30 years. Kevin McAleer was crashing 100% of the room for a full 40% of his act by pointing out details of bland images. Then he brought them back and referred to to bland images in a new light. That takes a lot of skill and a level of confidence I had never seen before.
SL's persona takes that strategy and pushes it as far as the audience can reasonably be expected to go and still come back. If you haven't seen Kevin McAleer then do take a look. If anything, SL does gauge the audience well before embarking on that nights level of alienation.
In short - you have to see the whole thing as it isn't quite stand up. I at least see elements of Spalding Gray and Simon Munnery, neither of who can be properly placed in the neat box marked stand up. Either accept that acts may not sit neatly in a box or criticize an act for not fitting into your box, not for being what you you expect.
Of course I could be totally wrong, but at least I have attempted to point at other acts which overlap and allowed people to compare. I like SLs stuff but I was pleased that only 4 series of Comedy Vehicle were made - too much money tends to fix an act into a money-making model.

I perceive that SL the man and SL the comedian are both enigmas. I believe he has a total cynicism and contempt and detachment about human nature, himself, and his craft, such that he truly doesn't give a shit about how it turns out. He may write some stuff in detail, and rough plan a gig's direction, but I think his improv riffing is more an intellectual experiment to see how far he can fuck with people's minds, such that they enjoy the absurdity of his APPARENT ramblings. I've seen him do "real life interviews" but I was not convinced that one word he spoke was sincere. Stu hates to play the game -- in any situation. I think he just enjoys the life of mental acrobatics and that his comedy is 100% cerebral, not emotional or visceral in anyway. Any laughs or fans he gets along the way, are merely accidental by-products from what he enjoys doing.
