    I dont know whats worse, this video being uploaded in 2015, and me not seeing it until now, or the vast amount of years between when I played this as a kid, and only just seeing the end sequences now.

    And 40 years after its release I've only just noticed that the game's cover-art was a depiction of the ending all along.

    No one seems to mention this, but it was written on the cassette tape box that the prize for the first person to complete the game was to stay in a mansion with Matthew Smith. I really wanted to win, but didn't get close :(

      @@Njenkin I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that there was a bug in the game that meant it couldn't be completed. I'd be very interested to know the real truth... Another thing never mentioned was the security you had to go through to start the game. There was a card or something in the cassette tape box that had coloured blocks. You had to input the right colours to start the game. It was such a long time ago I can't remember the exact details....

    • @Njenkin
      @Njenkin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I owned the original. There was indeed a big colour code chart. I leant the game to a friend and it come back with ink blots all over it where he’d obviously been copying it. There were indeed a couple of bugs in the game, you’re correct Matt.

      @@Njenkin Curious to know how old you are? I'm 48 (in 2021 for anyone watching at a later date). The 48k ZX Spectrum was such a long time ago. I doubt there's many my age that still play computer games. Resident Evil 7 on the PS5 was quite an experience, and I think even old school gamers should give modern games a try, because although I think I'm too old for most modern games (boooring), there’s the odd one that that will surprise the hell out of you (RE7 frightened the life out of me, and gave my 12yo boy something to laugh about). It's not often you’ll hear your dad say "holly shit!" when he's experienced a jump scare in a modern video game.

      @@Mickparrysstepdad just for balance, coming up this a few years later, I'm 45 in 2023 and can confirm that from being a proud Spectrum owner onwards, I've gamed pretty much every generation of computer /console. I still play to this day - currently loving my Steam Deck which ironically I'm playing more for PC and emulators in games of the past than my latest on Xbox Series X! I think you'd be surprised how many people of our generation are still gaming away now.

    So when you went to the attic with the Pac man like caterpillar in it, the game corrupts and some rooms kill all your lives .
    That was the bug . I suppose you could try finishing by avoiding the attic.
    I don't know.

    • @Njenkin
      @Njenkin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was the issue yes. Possible there are some modded versions which correct this.

    He is literally hopping mad at the end there. Who wouldn't be? Jumping his way through hundreds of hazardous screens only to end up back where he started.
    Anyway, I thought it was a nice touch, finding enough space in the memory to squeeze in good old Central Cavern. And all in just 48k! Unbelievable.

    My dad had a bootleg copy for C64 and so I played when I was a kid. I seem to remember a screen where, what I thought was his wife was mad at him because he was off his head on acid again and not feeling well and not wanting to deal with the angry lady locked himself in the bathroom. I think I noticed this when I went back to it as a teenager, and given some of the sprites in the game it seemed to make sense.
    Also I don't remember being able to stop walking, Willy was always travelling in one direction or the other and when I completed it the game started again with everything moving or being animated backwards?
    Can't seem to find anything confirming a version like this existed and to my knowledge I've never been on acid, so.... >.>

    Cool seeing the ending of the 2nd one. I wonder if it isn't actually completed until you do the manic miner screen. I heard somewhere that one of these two games can't actually be completed due to a bug???

    • @Njenkin
      @Njenkin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +theretrogamesnews That's true. I think both of them have objects you can't actually get to without a poke. Couple of invisble objects somewhere also. Damn tricky. Would love to complete that Manic Miner screen, but atlas it doesn't let you. Curses!

      that's somewhat of a drag, knowing the player can't actually get to the end of these legitimately, because i'd started a list of games i wanted to finish and they were on it.
      dunno if you've done a video on the topic before: games you've completed (no cheats) in the past; is it all just pick-up-'n'-play these days? do we have the patience / time for anything more? mulling it over a few years ago, i wasn't sure i'd finished very much that isn't a text adventure or point & click, and that seemed a shame, so, i started focusing on trying to beat specific action titles. it's made me enjoy the hobby again, and feel slightly less like i'm just throwing the hours away / eating up time.

    • @sturmwind1180
      @sturmwind1180 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hirelingful I keep a list of games actually completed, well, really I just tick them off. But it makes interesting, if predictable reading, in hindsight, especially noting the types of games completed. But overall, completed games are few and far between, with time being the major obstacle these days. I don't want to become a hoarder of towers of un-played games though.

      began taking a photograph of ending sequences some time ago, for a quick visual reminder (and as proof, when my DONKEY KONG COUNTRY save data wiped just minutes after i'd completed it!!!). i haven't played daily for a good few years. (that may change soon, after i get the ZX connected up through RGB!) usually, when the mood strikes, i'll dedicate some time in the evenings to a specific game, and after a few days often have something to show for it. spurs me on.

    • @sturmwind1180
      @sturmwind1180 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good idea, taking a pic. I remember magazines used to ask readers to do that back in the day. That is a nightmare losing save data in that manner. That happened to me with Shadowman on the N64 when I was close to completing it. I was completely de-motivated to go though it all again.
