While I sold audio at Sam Goodys in 1980, I wanted an A 402 badly, but they did not sell that (sold some HK receivers) so I got a fellow sales person to write a quote (basically wholesale cost) and took it to a different chain in Jersey claiming they would match any written quote. I gave them the card, they freaked, called my store and spoke to the salesperson on the card. He, of course confirmed the price and voila, a true deal. Loved those LED meters.....and the dual headphone jacks
For those that don't know, this is a real monster, it is the same as the Harman Kardon 730 receiver, minus the tuner!
2nd best sounding amp I've ever heard. I just finished a full resto and it is awesome. Built like a tank, very high build quality that's up there with the Citation series. Uses the same twin powered amplifier design as the 730

I have the same amp. I got it when I was 15 years old and I still have it. I'm 55 now and still using it.. I run a pair of cerwin Vega D9s with this amp. I about to speakers brand new 35 years ago. I've been running them with the Harman Kardon every since I purchase them. Thanks for the video I never knew how many watts this amp was

I just got the same A402, I did a comparing with Marantz 2230 and they sound identical! Nice sweet sounding little amp!

I have the same amp herein the U.K. so I looked up the amp ref reference as I’m having that trouble with one of the speaker channels, and your video came up, so that looks like it could be the same situation you I have .

It is a wonderful amp. If your channel issue happening with all inputs or is it specific? Mine was just in one of the phono, but still, the solder joints on the terminal board needed to be redone. It took about 5 minutes and all is well again. I believe its its fairly common on this unit.
BIG AZ SPEAKERS Hey thanks for the reply , I took it out this morning for the first time in years, and it didn’t sound great and only on one channel, so after a while it worked poorly on both, but this evening it’s not performing on any at present.
I think I will get someone to take a look at it as your observation on the solder could be the answer. It could be progressive and now another joint has gone, after all it is nearly 50 yrs old ...
Hearing yours reminded me of the the great sound it delivers .

I used to have that much vintage gear. I sold all of it and bought a BMW convertible and a modern Luxman integrated amp...ended up with better sound and a convertible ;)

L'ho prestato ad un amico, che aveva un pre e finale Yamaha 300 watt (secondo lui) Quando abbiamo connesso il mio AK A402.... Voleva prendere a martellate il suo Yamaha.
Suono pulitissimo io ci pilotavo 2 JBL 200 watt bass reflex basso da paura. Bei tempi, ascoltando Supertramp.

I found one of these in great condition at a thrift shop that went under and the owner was looking to offload his inventory. Took this off his hands for free and cleaned it out with deoxit. No issues noted. Wondering now if this is better than my Pluto preamp running a uturn orbit custom with an ortofon blue through Klipsch r620's.
Sorry for being slow. I've been doing my Summer road trip buying more audio to take home. Did you come to a decision on if you liked this more than your Pluto? If you like the HK, definitely see if you can score a Sansui AU-555a. It is another amp that also serves as an amazing preamp. Between the two, they are beautiful sounding pieces. The price in the HK may be easier to find a deal on than the Sansui, but if you ever see a deal, grab it!

I would sell it only in combination with the matching T403 Tuner.
Both units are clean and fully operational.
