Aside from getting potentially hurt...the mule or horse learns what works to get rid of you. That gives it something to build on in next ride. And you, as the rider, have lost it's respect. In the end you will have a harder battle ironing out the wrinkles and regaining respect. There are 'holes' in it's training to revisit and fix. Go back to kind but firm ground work to get into it's mind. Don't be so proud you can't get a good trainer to assist, if need be. Ride through the issues when they come up...pull up your cowboy britches, stay in balance as best you can and ride it out...anything is fair to grab to stay on! You will win it's respect and gain a partner.
