      The L-theanine is safe, but I would be more cautious of the meds that need to be metabolized by the liver ( ie melatonin, valerian)

    Hi Dr. Jones - thanks so much for all of your very informative videos, and your kind nature in wanting to assist all us pet owners. I share my life with my beautiful 9 year old Havanese, Maggie. I am trying to plan a trip to Europe this fall which will require a straight 9 hour flight. She is used to car rides for a couple of hours, and has been on a couple of 3 hour plane rides when she 4-5 years old. I have never given her any sedatives up to now. For this 9 hour flight to Europe she would be in the cabin with me, but I would like to give her something to relax and remain calm in the carrier under the seat. I wonder which of the options you mention in your video would be best for this situation? I would really appreciate your expert advice if possible. Thanks for all you do for this community. 🐶🙏

    My SweetPea is 12 years old now. When she was 7 we took her with us on a split flight of 4 hours on one and 4.5 hrs the other and she was in the carrier but was so terrified of the noise she was thrashing about in the carrier. I had to beg the stewardess to permit me to put her on my lap to calm her in the carrier.

    Thank you so much for that. My dog is 12 years old and 14 kgs. we love him very much and now he has to take 2 plane journeys from New Zealand to the uk. In total he'll be traveling for about 26 hrs so feel very nervous for him. I will of course only be able to give him something before he leaves as won't be there to top up. Would really appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks, Sue.

    Hi. My dog is medium sized mongrel. He has severe anxiety and he would exhibit extreme restlessness, running away tugging the leash, heavy breathing, excessive drooling. I have trouble taking him to the vet to get his routine check done, nails cut etc. We have a huge shift to our new home. What would u recommend among all your options based on his brief history? I want him to have a smooth travel instead of jumping around the car or running away at the car park.

    All cargo holds in airplanes where they put pets are pressurized the same as the cabin. There are specific airlines where the cargo hold is also the same temperature and air circulation as the cabin, as well with dimmed lights. They do not take a lot of pets in the hold on these airlines because it can start to smell in the cabin. Where the animal experiences the most stress is on the tarmac waiting to be loaded last. This is where pets can get hypothermia in winter or heat exhaustion in summer. If you are flying internationally, especially, you might want to consider using a company that can help you choose the right airline where the pets are not loaded this way, where the hold is the same as the cabin air and temp, get your pet passports in order and make it a safe and relatively relaxing journey for your pet and yourself.

      Its truly amazing how off of the facts, the air travel environment is imagined to be. Temperature differences? Cabin pressure? Sigh.

    I have a 10 year old male lab fighting a condition called laryngeal paralysis. Accupuncture and health supplements have him stable but he takes one half trazodone twice daily which was working to take the edge off his overly exuberant personality and help him to pant less.. but he just had symptoms of serontonin syndrome from a slight increase of the med for two days

    • @kathysmoot2452
      @kathysmoot2452 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add to previous comment. I had him on St. John's wort and valarian tincture one dropper twice Dailey which may have compounded the issue. He recovered within a day after stopping meds. I wonder if there is a better natural alternative. I also wonder if a different med in low dose would be safer. Vet just wants to stick with trazodone. He has been on it for nine months. Also wonder if you have any suggestions for the laryngeal paralysis.

She gets downright aggressive so imagine trying to put her in a carrier. I’m gonna try one of your remedies a few times prior to taking her and see if that’ll work. Thank you so much for giving me an alternative to medication. I don’t want to give her any kind of pills… That’s a whole Nother ball of wax of aggression.

I have an 11 year old dog and due to work I sometimes have to take her on a 9 hour car ride across the county, and she looks just like Lewis or even more nervous about being in the car. The last two times she made the trip she suffered from sudden diarrhea so I've stopped taking her now. I didn't get the full answer from my vet as English is their second language so I wanted to ask is diarrhea a stress related symptom and have you heard of this before?

      Saddness hits me every now and then .
      And I do cry even still.
      God bless you and I pray he gives you peace.

    Can you use all of them for the same trip?

      No. Just pick one remedy. I suggest to try it before the trip so you’ll be able to observe how your pet is responding.

    I would like to use valerian for my dogs. I have the capsule form 250 mg at a standardized extract of 0.8%. My dogs are 15lbs and 23lbs. Could you please help me figure out the dosage if possible? Thank you.

    • @VeterinarySecrets
      @VeterinarySecrets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The valerian dose is 2-6mg/kg. Start with the low dose meaning a 15lb dog would get approx 15mg, and a 23lb dog would get 25mg. I would suggest getting smaller capsules, or the tincture.

    ▪️Great video. Very informative. Nice to know that there are more natural ways to sedate your pet. I always look for natural or holistic remedies for myself & all my pets.▪️☮🇺🇸
