SWV is no joke! The real difference between 90s R&B and the stuff put out in the new millenium is that they HAD to show up and SING. No voice manipulation or adjusting. Those artists (especially in the early 90s) were routinely putting out live performance albums or going on shows singing acapella. We expected our artists to SHOW UP with no safety net. It was a high standard, and SWV was at the very top of that pyramid. Honestly, it wasn't just R&B. It was all genres. Folks in the 90s used to sing until veins popped up in their foreheads, like their life depended on it. Eddie Vedder, Jodeci, Kurt Cobain.... It was just different.

TLC released their first album around '92. The main hits from that album are "Ain't too proud too beg," "Baby, baby, baby" and "What about Yout Friends". They also have another big album, possibly before Amber became familiar with them, called 'Crazy, Sexy, Cool'. That album had 'Waterfalls,' 'Red Light Special,' and 'Creep', though I love that entire album.

Sisters With Voices hit in 92/93, so they like En Vogue blew up in the early to mid 90s. But yes there were so many female singing groups just in the R&B sound. Many of them were 1 hit or 1-album wonders but there was a lot of great music from the men and women groups of the period. In a lot of ways the 90s were kinda like the last hurrah of the singing groups because there was a lot less in the 2000s when everyone went solo. Some more female groups and songs from the early 90s to check out are Jade - Don't Walk Away, Zhane - Hey Mr DJ and/or Groove Thang, Xscape - Kickin It, Brownstone - If You Love Me and of course you have a lot more En Vogue out there as they had like a dozen hits.

Either way, the 90's was the Golden Era of female RnB/Soul artists and groups (coed or otherwise). I mean there was Aaliyah, Changing Faces, Monica, Brandy, Brownstone, Groove Theory, Something for the People, Faith Evans, Christina Aguilera, etc. etc.

After En Vogue came out in 1990, and the huge success they had, there was an explosion of record labels trying to discover the next big thing in girl groups. So there were like dozens upon dozens of girl groups that dropped songs in the 90s. Most were either one hit wonders, or just "eh", but there were some that were pretty hot and made great music. like Brownstone, Xscape, and Jade. But even En Vogue weren't the first popular girl band. There weren't several very popular all girl groups from the 80s that made great music, such as, Expose, Mary Jane Girls (two groups I HIGHLY recommend you react to, btw, if you haven't already). There were others from the 80s, but they mostly were one hit wonders.

Also, other Female Friday candidates: Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" and "He Wasn't Man Enough". Jill Scott's "Gettin' In The Way" and "Gimme Gimme". Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" and "Like A Star" and Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" and "Don't You Want Me". 😎👍

was in elementary school in 80s & hair bands will always be my #1 but I listened to it all growing up-past & present-and still have been that way into future. So love the journey y'all been on. Cuz to me, there's way too much amazing music to pigeonhole self into one lane.
Imo late 80s-90s was to me the best time for R&B fans. Solo & groups, from Mary J, Brandy, Monica, Salt & Peppa, En Vogue & SWV, and so much more. But even as a guy, I lost count of how many times I heard this back in the day. A radio station in early 2000s played lot of the urban R&B certain time every week called "back in the day buffet". Hearing all these great songs ya do, bring back so many memories. The nostalgia is insane & the world was far from perfect back then, but with no internet, everyone's world was smaller, things never seemed that bad, and the future looked so brighter. So sometimes it's bittersweet looking back, but wish these kids today didn't have weight of world on their shoulders. Wish we'd just let kids be kids again....and I almost forgot bout TLC even tho it's impossible to bake all the great artists & groups. Loved TLC & RIP Left-Eye & Aaliyah
