I love how the original sounds like: I don't care if hurts (me) I wanna have control (over me, over my life) but this one is more like: I don't care if it hurts (you) I wanna have control (over you)
The original one sounds like someone whose whole world was torn apart, the negative harmony one sounds like someone who is about to tear the world apart bit by bit. I love it
Sinister undertones (or is it overtones, musically 😆). It seems to shift the mood from sadness and vulnerability to something dangerous and foreboding.
yeah, it honestly sounds like someone trying to guilt trip their ex into coming back, like the deadbeat “I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo” just feels so wrong.
But the search on TH-cam obviously wanted to troll me, because when I typed in “Creeps Negative” at the very top there was this video, and everything else below was nirvana
I like this version way more than the original. It feels like this is what Creep was supposed to sound like lol. I love how he sounds like he’s trying to sound nonchalant while choking down venomous jealousy and lust towards whoever the song is about.
Wow the line "I'm a creep" seems so affirmative and apologetically definitive, with the notes going down and not up. I think I prefer this to the original! Same with bohemian rhapsody
I mean, their songs really do tend to be about similar things, I'd say a good chunk of the time Muse is just Radiohead if they got prescribed some good antidepressants, did half a line and set their spotify to "This is Rachmaninoff".
It’s because this way it sounds emotionless, like psychotic, anti-social, a person who has no feelings, and tries to be violent to maybe feel something.
That's a good way to put it, cause yeah, I could tell there's a tonal shift, but in what way. Especially the chorus and the guitar just rips. In the original, it's the angst build up that overflows; here, it has this menacing, psychotic energy; violent is a good way to put it. @@nattivl
I want to take a stab as to why i think this is!! I am very new to music theory so if anyone disagrees lmk abt your theory 🙏 ok so what i have learned from jacob collier is that negative harmony is an inverted key center. So major becomes minor. And this song is written in the ley of G major with the chords G, B, C, and Cm. (What is so fascinating is that Collier hypothesizes that the right side of the circle of fifths, major-brighter or "happy" is the fifths side, and the left, minor-darker or "sad" is the fourths side) so i think negative harmony has turned this song from major to minor and thats why its creepy.
I do write down requests that I see in the comments though I don't always get to them in a timely manner. But I will say - toxic is an amazing idea. gonna fast track it. Gotta do more 90s/00s. thank you!
Could u go into explaining this a little more? Like, for instance the Dm chord: would I play a regular Dm, a fucky version of it, or am only plucking out the appropriate strings/notes from the chord that correspond with the negative harmony notes? If the third senerio is the case, how could I find out what exact parts of the chord to play?
@@PM5C you could play the regular Dm chord, it’ll all sound like it’s supposed to in root position, but if you take the notes from the original chord progression, the D minor you are wanting to play would be a C major (C, E, G = C major), then the new notes in order would be A, F and D, so the D minor chord would be in 2nd position. A lot of nitty gritty stuff, but root position would sound good
It feels like the harmonic opposite has brought out the emotional opposite of the song as well - the flimsy facade of being okay replaced with an agony the singer is dead-sure of; the self-depricating plea replaced with sad self-realization.
I'm not sure if this is fair use or anything, but I'd legitimately listen to this if it were on spotify. The melody works better here than the original imo, its so dark. Just sounds awesome, well done on this arrangement. Been stuck in my head for the past few days. Its a shame about the artifacts from the pitch correction though.
