I've seen Thorsten in lots of issues of Musotalk, a german youtube channel for (mostly) electronic musicians and found him always being a very nice guy, very sympathetic, never snobby and very musical. Nice to see him in sonicstate showing his rig!
He could be a nice Sonicstate guest on a regular basis indeed. Could also imagine Jörg Schaaf as someone who understands even building and selling Synthesizers.
I really like Thorsten he such a very talented composer I love how great he is with his music raw talent I never met him but he definitely down to earth pretty cool guy I like him already.😊
Thorsten must have an amazing memory for such a complex setup to be replicated night after night. I’ve been listening to TD for about 40 years. Always find their music interesting.
Old TD fans who gave up on the band in the 1990s and early 2000s need to come back. The current lineup and work of TD is to me the best they have been in many, many years. Like, going back to Chris Franke, or even Peter Baumann. Yes, I realize that's saying a lot. But give them a listen, especially the Sessions works, which harkens back to when Froese, Franke and Baumann would virtually improvise entire shows in the 1970s and the "Tangerine Trees" bootlegs.
Thx for the tip. I'd indeed switched off on the modern TD work, myself coming from the Virgin years, and not really liking most of that they've done afterwards. I'll give the more recent work a listen.
@phil Anderson I agree the middle "girly* years went very limp, but in the mid 2000s TD came back to life. I sometimes wonder if Jerome left because things had changed (plus he and his dad found it difficult to work together, in the shadow of his father). Jerome's album Neptunes is a wonderful example of what he is capable of in his own right. For me I feel there was a marked turn when Ulrich joined and brought new fire and subtlety, his own style is very organic. Ulrich had been a huge fan of TD for many years before joining. I feel Thorsten is the right captain now, after all he's been with TD for a very long time. And Paul Frick has also added a new element that I like, listen to Raum which although definitely very modern, has wonderful depth. I love Hoshimo's violin work, but she looks so uncomfortable live on stage.
This made my day - the display of easy confidence about the whats and the whys was inspiring, as well as the "no snobbery" observation. Thanks for this.
Love love lovely Tangerine Dream!!! Have been a great fan, since the first album :-) So cool to get a tour of the synth system. Thanks very much for sharing this!
I like that T.D. uses a mix of everything that works and is not dismissive about only using this or that (AKA only using real hardware, no software synths, etc.) I often find myself just wanting to use hardware only, and I need to get over the fact that other means such as computers and soft synths can be very helpful in plenty of situations. After all, aren't most synths just mini standalone chips on PCBs anyway?
Band leader Thorsten Quaeschning wasn't even born until TD's 8th album was released... kinda funny. But cool that they keep the band going and very cool live-rig! Phaedra and Rubycon are some of my favourite TD albums! Cheers
they are not keeping the band going. They are exploiting the name and legacy of TD by playing similar music and some covers. I've seen the classic lineup, when all of the originals leave it is no longer "the band", even if they were playing in the many line-ups. If you are confident in your music, pick an original name and put your music out to be judged on its own terms. Billy Preston couldn't tour as The Beatles.
Bloody hell. You have to be so in tune with all your doing. I've been a massive fan for years. All those dials and buttons FFS I can't get my head around it. The sorcerer soundtrack is my favourite ever, really out thete
Since he was born, Tangerine Dream has been a sure fire way to relax my baby and help him off to sleep. Really interesting to see the rig up close and hear the process.
@@buzzfunk each gig was slightly different, (some venues got unique tracks, Bristol got Rubycon for example). The end of each concert was a 30-minute semi-improvised track
Thanks to all for this.... Lovely to learn how Thorsten puts all this together. 👍... Thoroughly enjoyed both Coventry (with Steve Rothery) and Cambridge on the current tour.
Thorsten saved Tangerine Dream. From 2005 onwards, whenever a new album was announced, my first thought would be "how much compositional input did Thorsten have?" And the more TQ compositions, the more excited I'd be. I feel Edgar's compositions lacked cojones towards the end.
Danm, when Battles come back to he UK Gaz should interview Ian Williams about his gear. Sonic state is almost the only place to find electronic rig rundowns
@@patsyparisi2620 Indeed. I recently updated a lovely reissue double Tangerine coloured vinyl remastered from original tapes, the second record includes different out-takes etc. Beautiful.
Question: every thing seems to be so interconnected, so what happens if an electronic component goes down or reboots during a live performance? Say one of the IPads glitches or spuriously reboots? Are there firewalls between some components before their signals get routed to the mixer(s)?
Very interesting. I Saw them back in around 2007, still with mr. Froese, at the age of 17. It was really a trip. Altough a fan of mostly their earlier work, i find very interesting how the analog was complementaried by modern sounds, never losing the psychedelic Sonic exploration, That is Tangerine Dream.
I've been a TD fan since my early teens, and I'm in my early sixties now, and I just have to say that Thorsten Quaeschning's handling of TD since the death of Edgar has been most admirable.
Something I’m guessing at, because he sort of dropped a few hints, but with all the modular gear, he must be using a device that can backup control voltage performances, so a recorder that has the ability to record DC signals. I haven’t really looked into this because I don’t have lasers or vusual performance gear, but I understand that the Eurorack gear can really lend itself well to orchestrating laser light shows. With those DC control voltages, It’s very compatible.
All 64 audio tracks are fed into TD's two Behringer X32 Rack recorders (Left and Right of Thorsten's modular), so any sound produced always gets recorded (pre-fade - which allows for remixing later), the live mix can be controlled directly from Thorsten's iPad mixer or from whatever equipment he is using: eg for the Euro-rack the Vermona outputs which control each line. TD doesn't use lasers (at least within the last few years) they used BriTeq movable spots (and other lights such as SolarWash 37 LED). On stage for this tour, they used 14-16 RGB wireless, LED light columns plus whatever the house has. TD have two guys to do the visuals (video and lighting) - with the lights sequenced/improvised and controlled by a touch screen as well as Hog MiniWing 4 and Nano Hog 4 controllers).
I didn't think it was surprising to see him mix analog equipment with virtual, digital, and computers. It would be incredibly difficult to manage it all with just analog. He would have to carry a chicken on tour for a start :-)

That modular system has expanded rapidly, since he showed me it’s initial configuration in Berlin 2012.🙂
and only one of the modulars that he owns :) including the more recent Marienberg which was used on 'Continuum'

Great hot tip. I wondered what it was with all that white paper/card on the back of Thorsten's synths.
