  • Last week I looked at the demise of the #exs24 • WTF Happened To EXS24!... this week I look at the new features of the new (nameless) Logic Sampler including a lot of its auto splitting and mapping functions, is it going to put me out of a job?
    To download the palm muted piano instrument I made in this ep go here: we.tl/t-dotcxU...
    What have I failed to notice, what have I missed and got wrong this week and what would you like to see in my final deep dive about "Dave"? Answers in the comments below!

    I’m totally blind, and have an old Roland Fantom-XR that I love, but find difficult to use because it doesn’t talk and has odd menus etc, etc. I was this close to selling it, but thanks to auto sampler, I’ve been reviving old sounds that I used to love using. It’s definitely, definitely making me appreciate both it as a module, and Logic 10.5 in-general.
    It’s incredible, and the novelty of being able to save and use sounds I loved years ago, in a modern DAW is just... Crazy-good!
    I know this sounds like Apple paid me to say it but nope, I’m just like a kid in a sweet shop, able to save sounds I once loved and in some cases, nearly forgot about entirely.

    • @JonnyMonday
      @JonnyMonday 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antoniog2854 The sampler stores the sample and mapping separately. Christian was working from one long sample with different locations assigned to keys on the keyboard. If you manipulate that long sample in an audio editor (without changing where the notes are) you end up with the same notes but a different texture for each one. I hope you understand what I mean, once you do the creative possibilities are amazing.

      @antoniog2854 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonnyMonday thanks for the reply! I guess where i am confused is what CH did to the file (the file processing with the plug-ins within Logic) . Does he apply an effect to one section of the long file, then another effect to another section, etc? Yeah, its pretty inspiring to think you could make endless versions of a file and just throw it in the sampler while the old mapping stays the same.

    • @JonnyMonday
      @JonnyMonday 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antoniog2854 You're right about it being inspiring, I think that's partly why he didn't show what he was doing. It is still saving things in the EXS format, so as far as I am concerned it is still an EXS Sampler!!
    The Auto Sampling plugin is worth a look - though it doesn't help with sampling piano's or real-world items, as it can trigger by MIDI, I am finding it very useful to "save" patches made on synths that don't have patch save functionality - and because the triggering is automated by MIDI you can make a really "deep" sample instrument (by sampling lot's of notes and velocities) so the flexibility of a sampler is not lost. I finally have total recall and can use modular/semi-modular synths in projects I jump in and out of.

    YOU CAN USE YOUR MIDI-CONTROLLED PIANO-PLAYER!!! One of the things I noted in the third of the three samplers... the hidden one ...is the ability to sample using MIDI. Tell it the displacement range... semitones, fifths, thirteenth... the sustain length ... and the amount of round robins and it will play the instrument for you... So hook it up to your German gizmo... and all you have to do is dampen the strings with your palm!!! It will play, sample, chop, map, assign and layer ...and pour you a beer!!! The number of beers dependent on how hard it reckoned you worked for it...

Then in post you edited the audio to the most relevant vocal snippets, then time-stretched the corresponding intervals of footage to line up with the audio clips. Am I close?

    Great Video Christian. I like the way you can re-save the audio file with different Fx and it changes the sound of the sampler. It would be great if you could setup unlimited Fx chains and then have the Sampler instrument sound randomly different every time you played it or hit a note. You could sit there for 12 hours hitting middle c and it create 1,000 of different sound based on the original. Basically unlimited sound choices. I don't know if you could use logic scripting to achieve this.

    Oh my! What i found was interesting on this new sampler was that now i can control the auto-loop's loop start and loop end with my midi controller by using smart controls. Never before found this possible with exs24, since to me it has always been really confusing sampler. This has been possible to do in Ableton for long time and i think in Cubase as well, but i like so much to use Logic that i haven't dare to change my trustable DAW to anything else....
    Either way if you want to try this, i try to explain as simple and good as i can to not confuse!!! After uploading the sample you want to control, for example vocals, spoken words etc. You need to go to Mod Matrix in the sampler, choose source as, Env 1 (Amp) and target as Loop Start and for the second row you use same source and target will be of course Loop End. Then you open Smart control, clicking the little i (info icon) on the left upper corner in the smart control window and under parameter mapping you can look for the loop start and loop end after clicking those separated knobs on the smart control window (it's active when it is blinking blue). While the knob is active you can map your controller knobs by clicking learn next to the external assignment. Then you should be able to control the loop start and end with your controller... This needs to be done in this order since otherwise smart controls will not recognize the target you want to control (of course).
    Sorry in advance if this was confusing to understand, but i'm just so excited about this update!!! And i was just wishing this kind of sample control to be in Logic this winter and i didn't know this new update was about to come and lucky us, this update was kick-ass update.

    Marathon to Snickers in 1990. I was 3. I remember still seeing them in the cash and carry so that's definitely a marathon! Maybe Dave will be able to auto detect better if the file was normalised? I've been working on KSP and granular so haven't had time yet to properly play around with it. The workflow seems to bit a touch easier but then again I never had a deep understanding of EXS. Urs mentioned a really cool new feature, drag and drop to desktop or email. I'm wondering if this is building up to Logic on iPads?

Are you using ‘Autosampler’ under the utilities Menu, which actually fires the notes and arms the sampling ? It names files and creates the entire EXS file. It’s been in Mainstage for years and helps me avoid using cpu hungry AUs live... but it’s only just been included in Logic 10.5. Never understood why it wasn’t there before.

    Hey Christian! I downloaded the instrument because I was curious about doing the "lets alter the original wav file and see what happens" scenario. I put a bunch of sound toys on the original wav file, and then replaced it in the folder where it came and it worked! So far so good... now, I saved the instrument with a "Distorted" at the end, and tried to re import your instrument, but the problem then was, that since the wav file never changed both instruments have the same "origin" now....
    I wonder if you have found a way to address this??? I will do more R&D on it, and come back with new info :)
    This whole thing is particularly exciting... because it allows us to almost have like a template sound file, and a template "Sampler" instrument and use those combinations to create several new ones... now we just need to find a way to change the damn filename xD

    Hmm is EXS's AAC playback better then kontak's lossless compression export? maybe, the ability to chop samples and have the first transient .wav, and the sustain sections lossless AAC with the help of some redmatica tools to speed things up (if they can still run...) would annihilate any sample quality and storage comparisons with Kontakt. multiple mics - well that already runs thru the groups and all ready implemented in logics drum patches utilizing the plus button to introduce a separate channel strip and fader for each channel. Far better then trying to deal with kontak multiple mics, but still one little button away from being accessible to everyone. Custom GUI's tho? Kontak's major staple. The smart controls do allow you to create your own .layout files and background images, however by only replacing one of the stock logic ones. his function is close, and very rewarding once working, but not quite there yet..... Only a few more updates - and Logic's own App Store and sample libraries will finally be showcased and sold the way they should be. Kontakt's scripters, well they can script important things in Java now, or go back to plug in scripting in actual plug ins where they never should have left.... Just my opinions tho.

      Fifty Cycle Logic has a few features on Reaper, but Reaper has a level of fine tuning and customization which is not possible in Logic. I don’t think RS5K will see an update like EXS24 did anytime soon. Anyway, They’re both great software in their own right.

    Had a quick question for the community! I'm about to sample my first piano, and want to do a pretty good job. Probably going to sample every 2 semi tones at 3 velocity levels and release triggers. Also planning on doing three takes through everything besides the triggers I'll probably just do 2 passes. To get more "accurate" of an instrument, should I also be sampling different note lengths? staccato, short, and long? Or is software well enough off handling the length?

    • @martifingers
      @martifingers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No expert but I would say the sound will be very much more authentic if you sample both short and long notes. The software "fading" of a short note will sound different to the mechanical dampening, I would have thought. Unless you don't want authenticity of course!
      I found this helpful about sampling in general: th-cam.com/video/Yvco_DWMV_g/w-d-xo.html
      It is not a negligible task! With a piano too I wonder how you intend to mic it. Include room sound ? What sort of room etc.?

    I'd like to know what you feel about how Dave wants to do things. The new Quick sampler (Optimised) is quite a fun game and creates some lovely things if you surrender to the randomness. He/She/They/Ze is quite a fun playmate, considerably more spontaneous and immediate than Eric Xavier 2 the Fourth ever was.

      As far as I can see, they'll analyse the pitch, then items of a similar pitch are stacked together. Not precise but perfect for pleasurable piano play.

    I presume all the automatic features are from Redmatica Keymap; Autosampler appeared in Mainstage a few years back as a sadly very feature reduced Redmatica Autosampler.
    Also, does it still use EXS24 format or do we now need to start from scratch if we want to develop things further in Kontakt?

      Does import of exs instruments work again in Kontakt 6? (haven't upgraded yet and had to futz around with the component library for K5 to get it to work...) - Though, if 'Sampler' files are no longer compatible ...

    I have a question about the logic sampler and hope you can help me:
    I noticed that in sampler there can be several groups on ONE note!
    for example: if you drag the live loop „Isabela - Pop Tumbao“ on a track, Logic creates a sampler-track with a drummer region. if you convert this region to a midi region, you see that it contains only 2 notes (Conga Bright High on D3 and Conga Bright Low on D#3).
    but if you open the Sampler plugin, you can see that there are actually several groups on the same note: for example on D3 there are several „articulation“-groups (like opentone, closeslap or fingertip) beeing trigered by only one midi note D3 (if you click on different notes in piano-roll editor, you can see the groups change in Samplers mapping view).
    my question is: how do you control which group is triggered? if I want to program my on pattern in the piano-roll, or any other way, how I can control which group is beeing triggered, like opentone, closeslap, fingertip or so… it´s not via velosity, nor could I find something in the event editor.
    maybe you can help me - would be great!

    Isn't this just the functionality of the old Redmatica stuff? Seems a missed opportunity that they've not expanded on that then but also understandable.

    I wish apple would have taken the opportunity to also give Sampler a proper and decent file structure system where you save your instrument where you want yourself into one folder containing instrument and all files-instead of being addressed to the given folders. Would be so much easier to just choose my folder on my SSD where I like to have my samples and instruments.
    Still hoping for someone to make the Kontakt killer sample player/creation plugin that meet and take advantage of todays standards and technology.

    I thought you referred to the new Autosampler AU plugin, not the EXS auto function... btw. The file ending of lib files is still EXS.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same thing. The fact that the file "ending" (aka extension) is still exs is to keep the continuity with the old esx24 and allows you to work with your old libraries (created in esx) have a great day and stay safe

    • @SarahKchannel

      All the old EXS instruments load without conversion, new one are stored in a seemingly same format. I think it just got a facelift and some Botox injections 🎃

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarahKchannel I haven't tried it yet (one of Christian's rules that I respect is "don't upgrade your system in the middle of a project") but it seems that it's not only a (welcomed) facelift but also has some more functions (like the automap that Christian is showing in this video). Like it or not, ESX had a characteristic sound and what I will look for is to understand if they've changed it. I'm curious because through the years Logic developers have rarely made only a cosmetic change. As shown in this video ES1 is still in "Gremlin's green" LOL 😂

      Thumbs up for bringing up Renoise. I also love its breakout version called Redux, which is like the sampler portion of Renoise broken out as a VSTi on its own. It has some musical properties that no other sampler has, namely its way of making phrases and arpeggios, within the sampler, a la tracker-style! And then you can split your keyboard to play different phrase patterns, or you can have them transposed chromatically. Essentially a very nifty sequencer within the sampler. Love it. Redux is the most underrated sampler (and possibly the greatest in many ways) ever made, for sure.

    That Undo problem needs to be fixed. The Undo function should be smarter than it is now. It should know you are working in the Sampler.
