I'm glad I saw this. I was born and raised in Hamilton Ontario and I remember hearing that horn. I moved to Sydney, Australia twenty years ago and I often think about landmarks like these.
Back in the late 70's early 80's we used to ride the bridge. We'd sneak up on the Burlington side opposite the control tower, and climb up on the old tracks at night. Back then there was an amusement park on the Hamilton side. I can't remember when that closed. Good fishing there in the spring, there used to be a lot of smelts then came the trout and salmon I hear they closed access to the piers during COVID. Good times back in the early 80s
You can see that there were rail tracks that go into Burlington and now there's a hydro right away leading up to Fairview, there's still tracks I think running under a bridge over some industries
Awesome, thank you for this. With a depth of 9m, the deep draught of some ocean liners leaves them less than 2m from bottom. In other words, the ships are not socially distancing from the bottom of the canal.
Looks like 5m height. Not sure how to tell the weight when crossing. All the bridge regulations can be found here: www.bv.transports.gouv.qc.ca/per/1133835/07_2014.pdf
I'm old enough to recall the railway tracks, and a time when Lakeshore Road went straight through from Burlington, over the bridge, and continue on into Hamilton. There are clues that still exist on both sides of the bridge to indicate this. Reminders of the old railway tracks are almost completely removed. However, the pedestrian path that people walk on across from Joseph Brant Hospital on the lake side is where the tracks use to run.
