Me and a few of my mates met him in a pub in Middleton, in the mid 90s. I was a bit wary of speaking to him initially, thought he might be a bit corky and sarcastic tbh. By 10 o'clock he was buying us rounds of drinks, he was such a lovely guy. They say never meet your heroes. Well I'm sure glad I did. RIP legend!!!!
I'm a Midlander, Notts, and was in Camden. Ex psychobilly, and there was this guy who was the Meteors drummer. I mentioned that back in the day I was into the Meteors and got the cold shoulder. A mate walked in, building trade, and asked what was up. I told him the guy was a cunt. He went for him.
Mark E Smith is a total original character. I appreciate he died way too young. RIP Mark. I’ve seen casual interviews, usually in a pub. He was a real thinker and sage man.
Among the many reasons as to why this deserves to be remembered forever is the fact that Mark sings "I can't get over ye" rather than "...you". Brilliant, much-missed gentleman.
Always loved the FALL gutted when Mark E Smith died music world a poorer place without him .... Classic cover of Motown legend R Dean Taylors classic "There's a ghost in my house " RESPECT 🙏.
I will go to my grave without knowing the lyrics to every one of the Fall's songs and that's just going to have to be ok, even though I've tried to keep up since 1979.
Along with Joy Division, one of the few honest bands ever. No male swagger/machismo defence mechanisms, just a laying bare of the horrible truth, which is hugely refreshing, and what real art is about.
My old uncle Joe once sang this song on karaoke while he was drunk as fuck .. Uncanny how he sang the same as Smith but never got the fame and glory of him .. Strange that
@@jamesy1955 The Fall were championed by John Peel. Far better bands like Green on Red were not. If the Fall come on the radio I will switch channels cause that guys voice makes me cringe.
Yes, I agree, you can see the way the cups smash they are thrown with real venom, Smith was always known as a hard Man to get on with, or as ian Broudie said an Awkward git.
Hate this song all you want, say it's not as good as R. Dean Taylor's version all you want; I think it's great fun, with an adorable video, too. And, thinking about the lyrics (even though I know Smith didn't write them), I realize what this song is: it's taking the ghosts/demons/hauntings leitmotif of many of the Fall's earlier songs (c.f "Spectre Vs. Rector", "A Figure Walks", "City Hobgoblins", etc.) and playing it not for thrills'n'chills or ominousness, but just for cute campy fun instead. I think that's why Smith wanted to cover this song, in other words: because it allowed him to burlesque the concept of GHOSTLINESS and HAUNTEDNESS that so fascinated him. And of course, besides being a song that uses ghosts as a metaphor, it's also a song about the dissolution of a relationship, and Smith's marriage to Brixie was already on the rocks by the time this song was recorded. So there's that. The video, for all its cuteness, is another of Brixie's laughing-on-the-outside-and-crying-on-the-inside manifestations (c.f her performance throughout I AM CURIOUS ORANGE, which I take to be one of her finest hours).
"Though we're far apart,/Your SPECTER's in my heart..." That's Mark E. Smith's revision of R. Dean Taylor's lyric; Taylor didn't say "specter" he said "you're always in my heart..." Interesting...
Taylor didn't say 'ye' either, which shows that Smith was a bit thick because 'ye' is an archaic PLURAL of 'you', but he's clearly only singing about one person in this song!
hmm, maybe he isn't talking about one person. is the zeitgeist one person? anyway, ur comment is a bit needlessly nasty innit? he's clearly wasn't thick. 'GOD DAMN the pedantic Walsh!' :)
Mark E Smith - Martin Fry shirt, actually singing, pulled a wife several divisions above him. As Terry Wogan once said to George Best, where did it all go wrong? :-D

Oh no. Brixie and Marcia Schofield are gorgeous. They always were. Brixie looks especially great here, in her little white slip-dress and two-tone hair, playacting a cheeky I-DREAM-OF-GENIE disappearing ghost. It's all so adorable; the whole video. Marcia Schofield's great too, but my heart belongs to Brixie.
Both versions are great in different ways, the original is sang well but Mark E Smith's minimalism with the melody is great too (sometimes less is more) and the guitars, bass, drums and keyboards all sound great too. To me this is the definitive line up of The Fall!
Other than the vocal, this could totally be a b-side from the last Smiths album. I know the Fall were around earlier, but there's an obvious Marr influence in the arrangement and production.
It's actually really close in sound to the production on the original version of the tune by R. Dean Taylor, a Dozier-Holland Motown release from 1966.

great story. rip MES.
I knew one of the band that was Manchester to a degree, 🙏
Quality cover of a classic!! ....she is beautiful, reminds me of Hazel O,connor my teen crush!!

What an ace song and video
I wish Marcia was featured more in the videos, shes stunning.

A world without Mark is a hollow world. A sad world. Brix is welcome to haunt me any day !
She's not dead you plonker. Can't handle an MES haunting? LOL
RIP Mark, you were a constant during the 80s for me
This morning, I actually heard the original of this song on the radio. Pulled me out of my sleep.
Mark was an absolute genius. And so am i for liking him.

The greatest pop star in British music history. Nobody can touch him.
Not even close
? WTF HEEHEE YOUR CALLING MARK A POP STAR ? HAHAHA...
Definitely the best pop band.
the fall was always a consistent underground force, not even close to pop
Too right!
killer cover version! rip MES. love Brix in this one. she's so beautiful...
What a great band. I miss you mark. 💥
Gotta love Brix Smith!
RIP Mark 1957-2018 You are still a legend.
Brix, what a beauty
Should have gone to specsavers tho....love the fall
the falls best cover imo its not far from the original but has the mes stamp on it
I love this version, one of my favourites.
A most peculiar man from Manchester. His death bummed me out because it was barely mentioned in "Rock Press"of today. A Genius he was.

tidy looking brix looks lovingly at mark and looks to be going "oh i love you mark darling" while mark is like "get us another tenants"
Just something else . Elsie .
I thought it was the pub on the Well Green in Hale Barns
This version of The Fall was as good as any Indie band . Some would say even better.
I wish Brix would have haunted my gaff
There are two definitions of the word gaff. I'll not ask to which you refer.
I went to Marcia's wedding reception in London. She was a Doctor by then, I had a few too many as one should 🎉
The days when talent and a dodgy video counted, such great times.
Man he looks so fucking young in this. Were all for the chop in the end though.
The effects of the chain smoking hadn't caught up to Mark yet.
An ever elegant Mark sings
My old uncle Joe once sang this song on karaoke while he was drunk as fuck .. Uncanny how he sang the same as Smith but never got the fame and glory of him .. Strange that
ha ha!😀
I might have also done this...
Margaret Moore because your uncle Joe didn't write the fall's songs
MES didn't write Holland, Dozier, Holland's songs, either!
... obviously, he was not appreciated
Brilliant
Great picture quality
Mark e Smith rip thanks for the music
This is absolutely fucking brilliant
Priceless..hope your kicking up a fuss somewhere...RIP.

Loved The Fall, only saw them 3 times though, not enough!
I bet the band enjoyed lobbing them pots at Smith's head.
GROUP not band. The Fall were a GROUP. MES said it relentlessly. You are clearly not a Fall fan

The Fall forever. Saw them in the early 80ies in St. Gallen. Location unknown (help me) ... was pretty stoned, I think.
