For people living in Florida, these grow really well. The ideal climate. For me, I'm in Washington state zone 8B. this particular plant lives in zone 9 or warmer. This Dwarf Barbados Cherry name is called Malpighia punicifolia ‘Nana’ in the ground in a place like Florida it will grow to be roughly two to 4 feet in height. Texas can also grow but it is not considered hardy north of Zone 9; Austin is in Zone 8a. It can withstand 25F temperatures, it is easy to grow in partial shade or even indoors. Barbados Cherry (Malpighia emarginata) is a “full size/standard” version of the Dwarf Barbados Cherry. Reaching up to 20 feet in height if planted in the ground. Best propagation by cutting.
Fruits are small and cute three seeds in each fruit making it more seeds than flesh ratio. The seeds were quite large! The flavor is bland with a hint of sweetness. More enjoyable for the eys than eating it. If you were to grow this for fruit as in bonsai I don't really recommend it. In-ground it will be more productive. Nonetheless, a beautiful unique edible tree.
