question: how do you decide a certain concept would be better off modelled using subd or normal surface tool? also; would this particular model have been easier to model with subd?

Frankly, there is no specific method. But SubD modeling is more usable in monolithic and organic models. It makes more sense to make modular and parametric models with Rhino or Grasshopper.

Regards, I have problems with the trim command, to cut the bottom and part of the entrance. Nothing happens, I have tried several times but I can't, could you tell me in which work units you are doing the tutorial. I'm into Meters small things.
any ideas?
