Hans-Hermann Hoppe: A World Without Theft

  • Dr. Hoppe's book 'The Economics and Ethics of Private Property' (mises.org/EEPP) is among the most important modern contributions to libertarian thought. Hoppe, like Rothbard, connects laissez-faire economics to normative libertarian theory with laserlike precision and inexorable logic. Property isn't just a social construct determined by legislative fiat, but rather a necessary component of self-ownership and the foundation of a free society. Hoppe details many of the arguments made in the book during a talk entitled "A World Without Theft", delivered at a Mises Institute event in 2006. This is a fantastic talk you won't want to miss.

    All the “garden of Eden” mentions in the beginning had me expecting some backwards views. On the contrary, this is a brilliant lecture, revolutionary yet pragmatic, And clearly explained with well thought out details. Bravo.

    When people praise cops for being heroes, I want to ask them whether, after hiring a private security company to protect a loved one, they would consider the company's employees heroic if all they did was to catch the murderer after he had already killed said loved one. I suspect they would not, and instead would be demanding their money back and blabbing to every consumer reporter in town about what a crappy job the company did.

      "...mercenaries, hired by the rich, to beat up whoever they didn't like."
      Pretty good description of the state's police and military.
      A private security company goes bankrupt if it does not provide actual - as opposed to imaginary - protection.

    • @rwalkenhorst
      @rwalkenhorst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All of this is extraneous to my point. Do you really think the government police protect you? Really?

      Interesting pair of options, you must be well read on the entire world's history and philosophy to have come up with that dichotomy. Surely you aren't just posting something on the internet without much knowledge and thought about it.

    The Dr.Hoppe world is a nice place ----how do we transition to it?

    • @bbiggie97
      @bbiggie97 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question -- views on how to achieve this society differ. But it seems to me and many others that the best mode of transitioning is through a peaceful convincing to the rest of the population that government is immoral, inconsistent, and inefficient. When people believe that we no longer need government, it will fade away in a slow but effective manner, and the public sector will develop into the private.

    • @magnus4g63
      @magnus4g63 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope so :) I would argue that it already is popular (to an extend) as most people rely on voluntary interaction in their daily lives rather than threats of violence, the challenge is to make people apply this moral principle / behavior in all aspects of societal dynamics and thus oppose all forms of coercion/government ... if this is actually doable is about the numbers i guess, and it not looking too good as people sink deeper and deeper into statism :/

    I think the biggest issue is it would take years for insurance companies, healthcare, security/policing, etc.. for the free market to build infastructure to effectivley replace the government institutions and regulatory regime. Everything would have to be done over a long period of time.

    Whether a consequence is absurd or not is not an argument for or against preferences. To declare a priori that a consequence is immoral and is therefore a moral rule is begging the question.

      What's authoritarian as long as everybody's property rights are strictly respected ? (strong respect for property rights being the most basic rule of a libertarian society) Authoritarianism requires a state, Hoppe is a hardcore AnCap.
