2012 Leuven Open Backgammon: final. Interesting annotations.

- Johan Segers, member of the team that won the Belgian Interclub 2012, reached the final because he won all five previous rounds (swiss system). Michel Lamote, winner of last year's edition, fought his way here via a play-off against Marius Hentea.
This match is annotated by Michel (Black Speech Bubbles on the right hand side) he shared these insights before looking at computer analysis. I added annotations based on gnubg 4-ply (www.gnubg.org). You will see that gnubg and Michel don't always agree. There are interesting learning point throughout this video, and a fascinating backgame.
This match is to 7 points. The time control is bronstein system with 12 minutes in the bank and 12 seconds per move. Johan is on the left and Michel on the right.

Why are the clocks off in the last game? Every time they click back, more time gets added...
The clocks work in the last game in the same way they worked in the other games. The time control system is called "Bronstein delay". If a player moves within 12s, his time is reset to what it was before the move. If he spends more than 12s, he only gets 12s back. Should a player get to zero seconds, he loses the match.

It is an error, but not an obvious one. The extra checker off doesn't make a big difference, and both plays are equily save in the short term. Michel is already under time pressure here. I guess he decided not to spend too much time thinking about this one.

q8venom The move is legal. You can remove a checker from a point that is lower than the value of the die, provided there are no checkers on higher points.

The more i look at this, the more amateurish they look. Thinking about clear cut opening double moves is completely awful playing. The annotation ends up being god awful too cause it's just plainly wrong through and through.
