Thanks Peachy and team for making this video. It probably won’t be the most watched but it’s very meaningful for those of us who have watched it. We all hit a bit of a painting wall and it’s heartening to be reminded that that is as true for professional painters as amateurs. It’s great to push ourselves but it’s also totally ok to take it easy and get some models done that might not be your best, might not be as good as the rest / others of the army, might not have gone through the same processes or used the exact same paints. They are still awesome and they might well help you get back in the groove . Thanks guys. Keep up the wonderful videos.
Big ups to our Patrick. The direction and video quality is so good that I have to watch these on the big tv. Probably the only hobby channel I do this.
This video is ace & love the message here. Rolling back my standards has been a big breakthrough for me, I was always trying to paint everything to completion. I was getting disheartened at the time it was taking me to do things. For some reason I shifted my view to ‘good enough’ painting, so for 2023 I’ve shifted to ‘battle ready plus’ painting standard for everything to get it on the table. I thought I’d hate this, but I’ve really enjoyed completing things and getting units done. Love this message and would encourage anyone to try it out and shift perspectives!
I was really not feeling my Blooded Kill team about 2 weeks ago, and for the first time ever thinking about stripping them and starting over and i just wasn’t happy with how them, and it made me not want to sit down and paint anything at all. I decided to slap a layer of contrast paint over what I had just because I wanted to see if just putting some paint on them would re-ignite the desire to paint anything, and once the contrast dried, it was exactly what they needed to suddenly look like something I was excited to highlight and finish, and now I’m really proud of them, and working on the last model!
I can relate so much to this. I had a period of time trying to make everything perfect without getting many models painted. I started slap chopping more and then hitting the edge highlights later which has sped up the whole process and i'm pleased enough with the results. I'd love to see some more videos like this and how to get that smoother dry brush instead of the chalky look
Great video guys - should be on every hobbyists new year re-watch list, as there are likely projects that stalled during the previous year (or 5). Keep the great content coming.
Love it and completely agree that the struggle of the basecoat is my problem too. I recently found a series called ‘eavy Contrast on TH-cam in which the basecoat is done entirely with contrast and then layering and highlighting proceeds as normal. Highly recommend.
This video is gold. I always countered the painting burnout with a change of hobby for a bit, but this video makes me think that a simple change of technique can easily give me that easy reward to guide me into finishing a project. Very well done Peachy!
Really relatable and helpful vid! I mostly do projects in big chunks but it can be hard to power through. Also matching to the old stuff is always a concern but you had some really great advice!
I really like the advice to paint things a bit differently if it means getting them done. I’d been hating the thought of painting my Deepkin because halfway through I realised I couldn’t be bothered with how long my original scheme took, but I didn’t want to risk trying an easier method in case it looked inconsistent
Confession: I paint my rims all sorts of colours Stormcast Eternals - Black Lumineth Realm Lords - Steel Legion Drab Orruk Clans - Dark Angels Green Soulblight Gravelords - Khorne Red Nighthaunt - Black Flesh Eater Courts - Khorne Red
I love Screamer pink. I painted some MK111 Heresy marines in a base coat of screamer pink with a wash of Carroburg Crimson with pink drybrushed edge highlighting. Look mint.
Great tips! Ive run into the same issue trying to paint models in the "traditional" style now that i primarily paint using a Slapchop style which is way more fun for me. Any chance you have any pics or footage of how you converted the Ogyn? He looks mega! 😊
Well done. Thanks for the inspiration. Why not creating yt shorts like the advertisement? Love it. Imagine a noble regiment have to do some duty on necromunda. Its a lovely place. The people there are so glowing and nice.
I love your work and you always do such a great job of explaining what you are doing. You are like the Jacques Pepin of mini painting! Practical techniques with high end results that are attainable by anyone with a little bit of time and practice.
I have been painting for about 2 years now and have painted up 8 different armies and I have learned something new from each of your videos. More importantly, I have ventured out of my comfort zone time and again. This most recent video has inspired me to do a 30 minute challenge. Each mini in army painted in 30 minutes or less!
Ha, ha, I suppose for Peachy a year on the shelf is a long time, but I've got projects on hiatus for 3, 5 and more years. I've since come to terms with it as so long as I'm doing something I can't complain about projects half done. That happens mainly because I have plenty of projects on the go at once - the main tactic I have to prevent hobby burnout. As soon as I lose my mojo on a project I jump to another one, I look at it like a surfer constantly trying to catch the next wave and always keeping moving. I almost always base first, so I never start from a blank 'canvas' and if I get basecoats and washes on and then pause and go onto something else that's cool. I know when I come back most of the tedious work is done and the more creative highlights and blending is ready for me, so that I can move them forward. Bottom line - every project has its time, even if that is years from when I first started it. As rewarding as it is to finish a model, there is nothing like the feeling of finally finishing a model that's been 8 to 10 years on the painting table!
Great video Peachy (and team). As someone that is surrounded by better painters at work, I often struggle with getting in the painting zone at some point in every project. Great to have some extra tools in the arsenal to help push through.
Nicely done, Mr. Peach! I'm glad you were able to finally get these gents painted! I've got to get some Rough Riders because I'm hoping to do a small platoon of Ventrillian Rough Riders for Noblevember this year... Here's hoping it's more successful than last year!
The difference in colour of uniforms never bothers me. Weathering, different materials used when manufacturing like you say 👍 that ak brass looks a nice paint I think I'll have to get some Good job
Peachy, can use the most destroyed brush, and still paint a line clean. Noice. I like this lesson in breaking the painter's block. Myself, I often launch habitually into the slog, edge highlighting being the most required and yet most unrewarding things I end up spending time on (truly, no one cares about edge highlighting, ever. And yet, if you don't do it, people will be all critical about not having done it :P ) Sometimes you just gotta crack on and find that vibe. I dig it!
I have two motivating miniatures for my days where I hate edge highlighting: Two plague marines, one with all the panels, wounds and cracks edge highlighted, and the other where I just didn't. Seeing the difference in quality side by side, on two miniatures I painted myself, motivates me immediately.
As the old Jaded Gamercast podcast once said, "Done is the best color." Great job breaking through the block, Peachy, and thanks for sharing it with us!
I can't tell you much relieving it is to know that even somebody like you struggles from time to time. In my head, I've got the greatest ideas for units and figures and projects, and my shelves (and bank account) tell me I've got everything I need to go -- and then I sit in front of it and it's all a bit meh and it's tough to get going. Weird that. But here's hope!
Nice one! This is the exact stage my Drukhari are at, a mix of styles/undercoats and I need to get past the ‘wall’. I think I’ll start tidying up my Wyches like this and see how they look compared to my ‘proper’ Kabalites.
I fully support the Brown Rim Base movement! My favorite army has brown rim bases (Death Guard) and when I'm painting my filthy Ultramarines, they get the plain black rims, because they are just basic, lol. :)
Great video. Been in exactly the same position with having models at different stages of painting and having a mental block. I find that if I can batch paint 5 at a time, and do each stage consistently, I can churn out whole units with no problem. My advice is to avoid doing bits and pieces of odd models (and don't leave anything half finished to start something else), but rather tackle a squad/character at a time as bite-size mini projects.
HERETIC!!! All bases should be Goblin Green!!! Seriously, good video. Thanks for giving tips on making tying newer paint jobs into older painted sets. Keep up the good work.
We did a similar mini in part 1 of our two part Astra militarism vids, it’s mostly using the cadian parts but the process is pretty much the same. Really it’s just a head swap for most and a sword scabbard added to their waists

Not a full vid yet on that, but it’s definitely something I can look into doing, mostly a head swap and adding on the sword scabbards. With the DKK minis you will need to cut a bit off their neck joint, but it’s not super stressful and you will get a good flow going after the second one
Ha! A few folks have asked this, there’s nothing wrong with the paint I just prefer AK’s range of golds as their more reasonably priced and they cover just as well with lots of choice of tones
I watched this last night while I was finally making headway through getting a unit of Repentia painted for my Sisters of Battle. Great kit and awesome looking models, but the moment I finished assembling and priming them and had to actually start painting them, I just lose all interest. There's so many awkward nooks and crannies and tiny little details to have to pick out, it feels like they're going to monopolize all of my hobby time for ages. I don't like to switch projects once I start them, so my hobby productivity plummeted for about a week or two as a result. Like you say in the video however, once you sit down and put colour on them for long enough that you can start to see what they're going to look like, the motivation just comes flooding back and suddenly I couldn't be more excited to be working on this unit and to see it through to the end. This happens every single time I go to paint a unit for Adepta Sororitas, without fail - but I still get surprised every time it happens. 🤷♂ But anyway, Team Black Base Rims forever so thumbs down and unsubscribe. 😂
Great video with a great message. Just a quick note to say a couple of the paints were annotated in the wrong order in the basing, think pale sand was first, and might want to consider different colour fonts for the pale colours, white text on white grey background was a bit tough to read, but keep up the great work 👍
That pre-highlight with warm grey looked really useful. Is it worth doing something similar over Wraithbone before using contrasts and speed paints, maybe with a pure white?
