    I was diagnosed with severe Glaucoma 10 years ago and found there are very few doctors who actually know their stuff and care. After 10 years of drops i now have developed severe dry eye and lost vision in one eye!
    After several surgeries and therapies there is no much improvement but iop has stabilized. Sight goes faster than you can imagine!

    I was told two years ago that I may have glaucoma. Now after three visits to my doctor I still don't know if I have it or not. It pisses me off that so many doctors don't spend the time to talk to their patients. My time is every bit as valuable as ANY doctor!

      Sparky, it might be time to look for another Opthalmologist. Are you also getting Visual Field tests done ? I have to say that “ talking “ with your doctor will not diagnose you, but I get your point. Glaucoma is very prevalent in my entire family, sad to say.

      You are so correct and then if you go there and you already got the list prepared do you want to know about the eyedrops this that not many things the answers are use yes, no which drops to try what are the best exercises. And they just look at you as it just say wow you know I got a lot of of the patients waiting. Why don’t they give you the attention you want so you will feel a little better when you leave that office plus most people have to drive at least 10 15,20 miles to that Doctor your time is his valuable is his your life is his valuable is his so maybe even more I totally agree with you I just can’t understand, or they have these iffy answers from Hawaii

    I was diagnosed with Glaucoma at age 62. I’ve been on drops every since. I go to eye specialists every 4 months. My pressure is around 14. After cataract surgery I had hoped I could stop the drops but no such luck. I am now 84 and will need to keep up with the drops for the rest of my life. I use drops at night only now.

      There must ne something wrong.The pressure in the eye 14 is nothing.If it is over 22 there a problem Between 13-23 is usually considered normal so 14 is not dangreous
      High pressure in the eye does not mean you have that disease.

    I had signs of glaucoma 6 years ago, but it was related to autoimmunity, when God supernaturally healed me from Lyme/Morgellons disease, the next 2 years later, I went in for an eye test, worried they would tell me my eyes are worse, and to my surprise they couldn't see signs of glaucoma, they too where surprised, so no further testing was required. However my immune system is compromised at the moment and feel my eyes might be affected slightly, so there is a connection between your eyes and if you have autoimmune disorders, if you heal your immune system your eyes will also heal, God is my healer though, call on him, eat well and pray and He will heal you. 😊

    There is no history in my family and I had no forthright symptoms.

      that's a lot of rapid treatments for 25+ pressure, which isn't terribly high to begin with! Usually if your pressure is between 20-30 they'd start with ONE drop and test frequently, adding more if needed. Only if drops aren't working, surgery considered. To have surgery next day is incredibly aggressive :O Hope you are doing well now though

    I had cataract surgery in late 2017. I had three corneal abrasions. In Jan 2018, I lost vision. I couldn't see anything for a few days. I had a temporal biospy which came back negative. I went to Cleveland Clinic only to be told that the optic nerves were damaged in both eyes, without an explanation. My pressures at one point were as high as 53. Fast forward to July 2022(4 years later) I was diagnosed with glaucoma. I had a SLT which was successful. My pressures have been 15 and under. My most recent dr appt, my field vision changed. I have 20/20 central vision, no peripheral vision on the right side, limited peripheral vision on the left. I'm on two different drops for the rest of my life. My dr says no to glaucoma surgery as there is a high risk of blindness. I'm thankful for the vision I do have.

    Thank you for this video, what you said at the very beginning of the video about how doctors just tell you, you’ve got glaucoma and leave it at that. That happened to me. When I was first diagnosed, the reading was 33 I went to see a specialist week later and the reading was 26, a week dropped to 21. After four weeks later, still carrying on with the drops every day is down to 18. A further 4 weeks it is 16. This seems to me hood news now on my next visit after a further 4 weeks I’m hoping a further decline in the pressure. If that is the case can you come off taking the drops. 😊

    I have a question for you Dr. Elisabeth. I have been diagnosed with glaucoma in the last year but they are telling me ( a new doctor) that my records show it started 10 years ago for which I was never informed. i had an undiagnosed tumor in my parathyroid gland going on almost 20 years of symptoms and it was removed in 2020. Have you ever read of a relationship between these two with all the extra calcium floating around in the system with hyperparathyroidism? After my surgery I noticed that my vision actually has gotten better especially at night but these regular eye doctors don't believe me. I asked about a specialist but the medical insurance I have is extremely expensive with high out of pocket expenses which I can't afford on a fixed income.

I see the consultant every six months and my pressure in my bad eye last week at the hospital was 11 & 13 in my left eye which doesn’t have glaucoma. I’m lucky in the U.K. as we have the incredible NHS so it doesn’t cost anything for treatment. If you’re under 60 you pay £9.35 per item at the pharmacy.

    I don't see why a digital visual field test apparatus couldn't incorporate an eye tracker. That way, a stimulus could be displayed at any given angle relative to the exact direction of gaze. I find it really difficult to keep my eye focused on the central target. Maybe Apple health will include that functionality in their forthcoming Vision Pro.

      @dr.elisabeth7778  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wish I could give you a simple yes or no answer, however there is so much to consider in this question, including, but not limited to: Is the glaucoma affecting your central vision? How dense is the cataract? How much is the cataract affecting your remaining vision? Is the cataract affecting your quality of life/could removal of the cataract improve it? Some of these questions can be tested in a clinic, and some of them are questions you can reflect on to help you decide. This would be an excellent discussion to have with your provider, whether it is your primary eye care provider, glaucoma specialist, or a cataract surgeon. I hope that helps!

    Hello Dr Elisabeth, I was diagnosed with glaucoma about 5 months ago. I was prescribed Latanoprost eye drops by my ophthalmologist to bring the pressure down in each eye. I take the eye drops at bedtime. I have been back for 2 follow-up visits and the medication seems to be working to bring the pressure down . The problem I have is that the drops irritate my eyes when I apply them, and on into the next morning. I've found that they're a lot less irritating for some reason when I store the bottle in the frig, and put them in my eyes chilled like that. Does that make the drops less effective than having them at room temperature ? I know you're supposed to store the unused bottles in the frig, but I didn't know whether or not it was ok to keep them in this chilled state and apply them chilled. I forgot to ask my doctor about this at my last appointment. Thank you.

    • @dr.elisabeth7778

      Storing drops in the fridge is a common trick to reduce the stinging, so I’m glad to hear that is working for you! I found this interesting study that shows no significant difference in efficacy when stored in the fridge versus out after opening. To avoid any confusion for anyone reading this, the drop still does need to be stored in the fridge prior to opening, according to the FDA. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18717189/

    • @dr.elisabeth7778
      @dr.elisabeth7778  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessarily--Someone may have high eye pressure without optic nerve damage. That is called Ocular Hypertension. They are often watched more closely, at least for a while, to make sure they do not develop optic nerve damage.

  • @howardrobinson4938
    @howardrobinson4938 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It would seem to be that a certain amount of pressure on the optic nerve is good...because that is natural. Anyways, the question is why are retinal ganglion cells dying and the optic nerve atrophying? Hum...well, maybe because of genetics, but we Drs. and pharmaceutical companies can't do anything about that. There's only one other "controllable" possibility - that is eye pressure. Billions of dollars are spent every year on eye pressure lowering drops. Certainly gives the eye doctors something to do. Oh, don't ask your Dr. questions about YOUR glaucoma. That really ticks them off. Doctor's today work in efficiency mills. If you are glaucoma suspect, you will be put on drops...baboom. Next patient please. Will lowering the pressure slow the rate of progression? "Who knows" is essentially the conclusion of the "science". But the worst that can happen is you develop irritation or "hyperemia" as it's called, then there are more drops for that. Oh...and if the first IOP drops don't get you to the very, very low "target" IOP, guess what? Yep...a second drop for that. Some glaucoma patients are on three, four and even five different costly eye drops. Then your follow up appointments increase accordingly. Baboom...kaching!!! Oh yeah, there's even a type of glaucoma called "normal tension glaucoma". It's glaucoma with normal eye pressure. Want to guess what the treatment is for that? That's right...lower the eye pressure. Same drops.

I'm doing the best I can with lutein, Vitamin A, citicoline, B3, Life Extension Eye Pressure Support (among other supplements like glutathione/NAC and more). I've had SLT in one eye that was up to 28, but pressures in both eyes now hang out around 19/20. Doc says that's too high for my optic nerve damage and should be under 15 at the highest. (My eyes are too big at 28 mm axial length.) It's exasperating.

      @@blueskyes99 Your pressures are around 20? Shit, go home. "Doc, I'd like my pressure checked in 6 months. See you then. They're my eyes. Are we good?"

    61 years old, veteran. My doctor told me to come back in 6 months.
    But he said there is signs of glaucoma in my future.
    Now I'm wondering if I should schedule an appointment to have it checked again, because you said they like to see you more often in the beginning???

      It sounds like you are a glaucoma suspect and don’t have an official glaucoma diagnosis. A glaucoma diagnosis would more likely warrant more frequent initial exams. It never hurts to ask them for clarification! I hope that helps. :)
