What you said about Taeyeon's versatility is so true. You never get bored with her. It's amazing. She said herself that when she realised 'she don't have a distinctive voice' she decided to be a singer who can sing various kind of music and sound good. Well, she succeeded, I must say. 'Why' live isn't a best example of Taeyeons live vocal abilities because it contains a lot of dancing. Dancing and singing...The backing track seems to be stronger when TY is dancing and she just sings along. Sometimes she uses hand mic when dancing, then you know it's more the real thing but of course then the dancing performance suffers a bit. TY tends to show what parts she's not singing by moving the hand mic away. Nowadays it seems that she prefers not to dance so much but do more 'genuine' singing. Maybe more than ten year dancing in high heels has been enough. Of course 'why' live performances are otherwise nice part of her well planned concerts.
For me personally the equivalent of Taylor Swift in Korea is IU, singer songwriter who always tops the charts and writes witty lyrics, popular since teenage years, basically grew up in the industry For me Taeyeon is more like a korean equivalent of a trendy Adele, she has the voice and she has the heartbreak songs, and her nickname in S Korea is - trust and listen to Taeyeon -, as in trust she releases high quality music and listen to her beautiful voice Btw she did a busking cover of Adele - When we were young and she was phenomenal, I think you would love checking it out.
I feel like if I had to compare TAEYEON’s relevancy with a western artist it wouldn’t be taylor swift. I feel like she’s been in the game for almost 15+ years and is still topping charts like if she debuted yesterday. (To. X @ #2 in the Korean charts since release in NOV). Her music is just universal, and that’s why she’s just trendy all the damn time.😂 you always hear idols talking about her, how she’s that bitch basically. If I had to compare a western artist and level I’d say, Selena Gomez or Ariana grande level of fame.
You say how they were going for the most American song/video that they could get. Well, as the American music market is probably the most insular music market in the world (i.e. the vast majority of Americans will not even consider music that is not directed at them, and certainly won't buy anything that is 'unfamiliar' sounding/looking), so to break into the American market, you have to make 'American' music.
