I'd say this was mostly for fun, and was just another aspect of enjoying the Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) hobby. 'Hams' try to contact as many countries and other entities around the world as they can. There are some entities, such as Tromelin, that are uninhabited and don't have any Ham Radio operators living on them, so they are considered rare to make contact with.
