  • Lately I've been using one tool much more frequently for my color grading- HSL Secondary in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. This video goes over a few effective and creative ways to use HSL Secondary for better color grading results.

Man thank you so much. I’m glad that you didn’t show us how to make your specific colors. You showed the techniques used to achieve a number of looks. Those are the types of tutorials I look for.

    grading plan...
(don't mind me, this is just a reminder list for myself, so that I can read it and incorporate your tips into my process, when I'm following along with this tutorial)
    [CAMERA]
    1) get my exposure triangle right. i.e. shutter speed, iso, aperture.
    2) fix my white balance in camera using a pure white card.
    3) overexpose by 2 stops
    4) shoot in a flat picture profile
    5) hold a black , a white card, and a neutral grey card while filming, so that the the pure black pixels, and the pure white pixels come in handy while fixing the exposure in post...
[COLOUR CORRECTION / ADJUSTMENT LAYER 1]
    6) use lumetri colour to reduce the black, and bring up the white, until the parade touches 0 & 100 respectively.
    7) draw a mask around my gray card, to isolate it. Then, use the temperature and the tint sliders to bring the vector scope in center.
    8) use the white balance eyedropper on my pure white card to further make a tiny final adjustment to my white balance...
    just in case....
    10) draw a mask on the skin.
    11) use the hue vs hue eyedropper on my skin, then use those hue vs hue points to fix the skin tones, and to bring the skin tones in the center of the flesh line in the vector scope..
    12) make another point on yellow, in hue vs hue, to further fix the yellow parts of the skin, and to bring the skin tones in the center of the flesh line in the vector scope.
    13) use HSL Secondary to isolate the skin tone
    14) then use color wheels and the vector scope to further make an adjustment to the skin tones.. and make sure the skin tones stay on the center of the flesh line in the vector scope.
[COLOUR GRADING / ADJUSTMENT LAYER 2]
    15) use hue vs sat,
mark the reds where the skin tones are.
    Then desaturate the purple,
desaturate the green by just a little bit,
and desaturate the yellow by just a little bit.
    16) use hue vs hue to bring down the bring down the greens to a more minty shade.
and then bring up the blues and reds just a little bit..
    17) isolate the skin tones using HSL Secondary, then invert the selection, then reduce the temperature just a little bit, and also reduce the saturation.
    18) push blue into the shadows of the whole image
    19) use the luma vs sat curve to desaturate the black and whites.
    20) add a very subtle vignette
    21) duplicate the entire clip, add a black and white filter to the top clip, change the blending mode of the black and white clip to overlay, and reduce it's opacity to 10% for a subtle "clarity" effect.
    22) reduce the opacity of the grading adjustment layer to 95% just to make the grade, a tiny bit less dramatic...
    23) add a very small amount of sharpness.

You have explained HSL Secondary way better than most people who use Davinci , I personally use Davinci Resolve and I learned it through you rather than other people btw you’re insane when it comes to grading , killing it !! Small subtle difference but it makes a HUGEEEE difference !
