I learned on a 100 lb bag. Bare handed and it definitely teaches you to land your shots flush and square. I spent many weeks with sprained wrists and skin missing from my knuckles.

@@larryteague871 You're likely not using your forearm and hand muscles enough, make your fists tighter and flex your hand, forearm, and wrist while you're punching. They will keep your hand in proper alignment and braced for impact. That said, wraps are good for keeping your hands from blisters or skin cracking, nobody likes a bloody bag.

i doo fist pushups on asphalt combined with punching wall with boxing bandages applied, beliewe me it works, you can knockout ewerybody and brake its ribs, saddly i had real life use of it, saddly for the atacker.only drawback is no uppercut or hooking only direct.but your front direct becomes so strong that you brake oponnents guard becouse pain you induce.and using a 1kg dumbnells while shadow boxing gives you 20% more speed.lol try that way for two months and you will see difference when hitting boxing bag or someones head

Good idea, I've been drumming for about 50 years and still I can hurt my wrist with a good punch especially if they are moving to get out of the way (they wont make it, drummers are fast!) But it can set me back, taking a few weeks before I can play normally again. Another good one for the wrist is to get a weight, roe and a broom stick, drill a hole in the middle if the stick for the rope and attach the weight at the other end then roll it up and unroll it using your wrists. A trick I learned from Bobby Hull more than a few years back.

@@uzairmansuri4936 I'm surprised that such questions can be made. I take you never got in a fight on the street and never did martial arts. Boxing prepares your arms for a fight, but not your knuckles. (Have you even punched a back to understand how much your wrist could take??Try it.)
There is no damage to the wrist, when your hand is tightened and subconsciously you will pull back once you think you may be putting too much impact pressure. If you work a job that strengthens your hands and wrist even better, if you lift weights even better, if you do pushups, especially knuckle push ups even better.
Having said that, I am talking about fighting art practitioners, even so, most knuckles and wrists do not get hurt in a real fight, due to intense focus and adrenaline; we do not punch a wall, but moveable heads. Sure a child's fist/wrist can get hurt, or even a professional's can get hurt in a street fight, but it's rare and it's usually a boxer's fracture. You will millions of fights on youtube, but rarely or never find someone hurting his hand.
Soft, fearful, ignorant people teach the opposite, because they do not know of the elasticity of the hands, bones, and more.

    • @7outofthebox747
      @7outofthebox747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@uzairmansuri4936 Great! The reason they told you to wear punching bag gloves is that you don't scrape the skin on your fist or/and not to leave your sweat and skinn cells on the bag. You can buy a pair of punching bag gloves, not boxing gloves. Also, the bag is heavier than a head so you have to use caution, learn how much pressure you can apply and still feel your wrist safe. Using correct technique when striking is helpful.
What you can do is place one of your fists on the bag and just push it by extending your arm; do it 5 times. This is how you inform the mind (and wrist, elbow, shoulder) of the weight of the bag it has to deal with. Do it with both hands. Just push it from contact and see. Second thing is to punch it fast, but only on the surface where there is not mass resistance. When you get that down, start hitting the bag harder. Always do knuckle push ups or knuckle wall push ups for knuckle and wrist alignment. I say this, because I don't know your age. Trust me you will have no problem. Be taping your knuckles on hard surfaces; this will create thicker knuckles(won't explain how now), so that you have no fear of hitting bones at all.
Train smart and safe, be well.

@@uzairmansuri4936 To win a fight, you must fight. Do you have it in you to fight? Or are you very afraid as a person? This is the first thing you have to realize and know about yourself. Who you are and what you are capable of right now.
If you are a person that will fight back, do so only to escape a fight, not prolong it. Prolonging it means you have ego issues, hate issues. Don't start fights with people, but defend yourself when you have to just enough for you to leave or escape by running even using parkour if you are very young. Do not have evil friends that take you to evil places, this is one of the best ways to stay safe.
If one cannot catch you while you are running, even if he is a world champion, YOU WON!! Running is the best self-defense you can train in. If you can't run away, doing a system like Kyokushin, or thai box, even mma will help you defend yourself. These systems also being sports do weight training, but they need time to prepare you. If you can, at the same time join a boxing school to make you striking ready faster, or a genuine combatives school(not many out there). You need to be ready to defend yourself fast with the basics and if you want to keep training, which is a good things, do so.
Being a a weight lifter can give you explosive striking power, but having said that, power comes with responsability. Keep in mind: 1) you can kill someone and end up in jail or having to look behind your back all your life because his relatives will be looking for you.
      2) if the other guy gets you with a brutal strike, your explosiveness will be useless.
It's all about having 1) morality, 2) the purpose of escape, 3) a combative mentality when you need to, one under control, 4) realistic training that will as soon as possible give you tools to use to defend yourself.
If you are a fearful type of person, you need to work on your fear being removed, by replacing it with founded confidence. This will take long, but MMA or BJJ or GJJ schools will help you with that.
Again, avoiding evil people and places, talking your way out of a fight or running if you must, is the smartest option for you. Your ego will be hurt, but only if you are not smart enough to realize that your strategy outsmarted the attacker. The fact that you got out unhurt, means you won that non-fight!
You need to think, what kind of person you want to be in life. Subtle moves, small bad decisions, can eventually cost you. Fighting is not a game, you can kill someone or be killed, even by accident. Avoid fights, be smart, love yourself and even stupid people that never received the guidance you are receiving right now...

I've worked out on traditional heavy bags th-cam.com/users/postUgkxp9-sf95nqfjey-uyzxUzQ7m9MXRPK1BE a spherical stuffed "wrecking ball" bag, and now this thing. What I like about it is that it has the heft to stay largely in place so I'm not chasing it around. It's tall enough to allow for headshots and body shots, but it's short enough to give an uppercut somewhere to land. I'm very happy so far. Filling it was a bit of a cluster. For top-offs, I've learned that you can screw the supplied nozzle onto any basic plastic water bottle. I can't speak to durability as I've only had it a week.

My addition: A) From my experience training both with and without gloves, I found it interesting that the benefits of one don't really transfer to the other. Eg. when going bare knuckle, I have to pay a lot more attention to the precision of my strike so as to not sprain my wrists and to postpone the onset of skin abrasion, and that comes at the cost of using maximum power. Then with boxing gloves, the precision matters less since the resolution of your knuckles have been muted by the extra padding, so you might as well go with a lot more power+speed+rotation. B) To reduce the effects of skin abrasion, try putting a little tape on your hands.

Since then, ive been conditioning my knuckles the right way and haven't had an injury since. Now i can go full tilt buggie on a heavy bag or with a person and barely even produce slight redness to the skin, and even then only after about 15 or 20 min of continuous punching.

Wow these sandbag conditioning drills are great. I first learnt about all those concepts in Systema. But you have explained it a lot clearer. The density = heaviness, the hammer dropping = dead weight etc. All my Systema teachers understood this very well but couldn't explain it to me clearly at first (because Russian was their first language not English)
Great stuff! Personally I would recommend punching with only gardening gloves on. They allow you to clench a fist and practice punching identically as you would with a bare fist, they don't offer any "support" or force your hand into a different position. You have total freedom to contort your hand and fingers as you need to but they crucially protect your skin very very well from abrasions and tearing which allows you to practice for much longer periods. They will also condition the bones

There are lots of ways to condition your fists. Knuckle push ups are great wag to start without impact. Hitting a heavy bag is not going to harden your knuckles. It will strengthen your wrist and elbow joints which support the impact and prevent soft tissue and bone damage. I teach traditional karate and a popular striking method is a makawara board. Start punching these lightly and gradually get harder. His will take months. Punching post, walls, trees and other stationary objects is not recommended but can be done. It is important to note that if not done properly you can (like I did) suffer permanent nerve damage. I impinged my ulner nerve and my grip is now 70% strength. While I can still strike hard my grappling diminished a bit and is something that could have been avoided.

I’ve been doing iron palm training for a good 30 years or so. Another benefit of hand and forearm conditioning is the mental conditioning in addition to the physical conditioning. Yes, your hands become heavier and denser, but your mental focus on each strike becomes more concentrated.
That’s why people don’t injure their hands when striking hard objects like walls after years of hand conditioning. That mental focus is there.

I was bullied a lot when I was younger, but instead of hitting back, I would go away & take my temper out on walls, doors, you name it. When the day finally came when enough was enough & I DID hit back, I don't know who was more shocked - me or the poor bugger that I hit! Needless to say, he never bullied me again. That was when I was a skinny lanky shit of a boy & now I'm in my late 30's & put on some decent muscle mass, I dread to think what would happen If I punched someone now, considering the damage I did back then!
I'm just thankful that I'm really laid back now in comparison to the way I was at school - which was really bad tempered. So yeah, I suppose this was due to the "conditioning" that I gave my fists, destroying my fair share of doors in the process! Somehow I've never broken any bones or anything, just the occasional sunken knuckles.
Not trying to sound like the big hard man or anything, far from it, but I really hope that no-one is ever stupid enough to threaten my family- as I'm naturally protective of them & I don't ever want to revert back to the way I was. The thought of losing my temper with someone now actually really scares me, hence I avoid conflict at all times.
I'm now really fortunate & thankful to my wife, as she is the only one who's ever been able to calm me down. I also hope that our kids never have to go through what I went through at that age either - especially now that we are in an age where respect in children seems to be virtually non-existent.

Great vid. Very informative. Having trained wing chun (tsun, tyun and many other derivatives) for over 10 years with many experts across the uk and Europe, I was always taught to not over tense the fist, as it auctioned resistor muscles in the arm that slowed the punch down. Now, we trained somewhere in the middle (holding a bird in hand analogy), so whilst we weren’t super tense, there was no air in there either. Punch felt fast, strong and the arms didn’t burn out when chain punching on both wall bag and heavy bag. Mostly trained without gloves to develop density in knuckles. All good.
You make a reference to loose arm, I guess we are talking the same thing. So important not to slow the fist down with an over tensed arm.
    Thanks again for the vid
    #fightboss

    • @fightscience
      @fightscience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes, sounds like we are talking about the same thing. Basically people have a natural tendency to tense their neck and shoulders. By extension if you tense your fist you have a natural tendency to also tense your neck and shoulders. Hence why many teach to relax the fist in the hope that it relaxes the arm. Unfortunately, while this helps, it endangers your hands and reduces weight to the end of the punch.
Hence my advice. Tight heavy fist with relaxed upper arms and shoulders. This gives you speed, weight and power. More realistic for self defence.
      Thanks for watching my friend.

    • @Pwasercan
      @Pwasercan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fightscience I think the proper approach is to have everything loose until the moment of impact. Then you have to tense everything, you can't have you upper arms and shoulders loose, or you won't transmit any power, and you won't be able to absorb the impact properly (Newton's third law: Every action causes an opposite reaction). So your body needs to tense up to take back the same hit that you just gave.

This is a very good tutorial on how to punch, and build strong fist. I have always practiced punching on a heavy bag bare knuckled. Just for that reason, you don't go around on the streets wearing gloves, or wrapped hands. But as you say. It is very important to know how to make a proper fist when practicing that. I have made a short video recently on the subject myself. I have checked out a few of your videos. And I can see that you are a man with a real passion for the art. That puts a lot of thought into what you are doing. I have always said, any martial art can be very effective. As long as the practitioner trains the proper way for different situations. I really appreciate this because people kept telling me to wear gloves when hitting the bag at the gym and I feel like in an actual fight I want my knuckles and wrists to be conditioned to take a lot of punishment. Not necessarily so I can punch someone as hard as I can but so that if I do hit someone my form and hands are made for no-glove related strikes.
In the beginning I would hurt my wrist a little bit but over time I figured out how to keep my fist and forearm straight enough to where the wrists no longer become strained. The skin on my knuckles and hands in general has stopped tearing (it takes longer and more force to tear the skin). Thirdly, by the third or fourth time I come around during circuit training to hit the bag again I can hook it quite hard without hurting anymore (almost full force without pain, without injury).
Now I totally understand that if I hit someone's skull very hard I can still bust my hand no matter how long I train for it. I know that. Hopefully it would be the chin or the cheek I hit but in a fight there's a lot of movement and it's not always easy to hit the spot you want to. That's just the risk.

So I have a quick fix for y'all. First I want to say this guy is so right. It is even more important then he states. If you have a fist that can not handle the pressure your body will not allow you to produce the power. Our bodies are super smart. So by conditioning your fist you will automatically increase your power output. This is an automatic process people. Just so you know my punching bag is a steel tank and I punch it with no gloves or wraps. What people are complaining about is when your skin rubs against the leather bag. I got you. So wear a pair of super thin but tight fitting gloves. I got a cheap pair of work gloves. They give no padding yet you don't get the skin rubbing. Problem solve. Keep up the good work bro you got some really good points and advice.

Thanks for another great video. As a matter of fact, I love punching bare hand the sandbag, and I have learned from experience a few things that were not mentioned here. When you train, make sure there is no sweat on your knuckles, otherwise it will get slippery and eventually your fist will move much more while touching the sandbag, which will rip your skin off and then you will start bleeding. Another thing is that when I punch, I always do it with the front knuckles and always in alignment with my forearm, so I don't bend my wrist while punching. I've learned this from karate and thanks to this, I have never broken or twisted my wrists during a fight. But again, thanks for sharing your experience. Looking forward to your next video :)

I have done Taekwondo, and Shotokan karate and learned that hand conditioning or conditioning in general is a crucial part of training. The more a fighter trains, his power will begin to increase so you have to have hands that will not collapse when throwing a punch. Another thing is that hard weapons attack soft targets, and soft weapons attack hard. So even if my hands are conditioned i wouldn't punch at someone's skull or forehead that wouldn't be smart. I would palm strike it though. I would punch targets i know i could penetrate without the risk of breaking my hand. I broke my left hand years ago, now i hit even harder with that hand. The only thing is that there are many ways to train your hands, you have to be careful not permanently damage your hands, because alot methods of training them are not healthy. It is a slow process that takes years.

At 2:06 he comments on his critics' complaints that if you hit a heavy bag, you will damage your hands. I have to wonder which "expert" is worried about scraping knuckles? Every time I've had to hit someone in self defense I've scraped my knuckles. You punch a guy with a heavy jaw and thick beard, your knuckles will look like you took steel wool to them, even if they are "conditioned." This is not an issue. Scrapes heal in a few days. The important part is conditioning your knuckles to reduce the chance that they will break. He is spot on; the idea is to make your knuckles harder and denser. If you bust a knuckle in a fight, the next time you have to defend yourself (even after healing) you will have to overcome reluctance to trow a punch at full power for fear of breaking a knuckle. Train carefully on a heavy bag and train both with and without knuckle coverings.

I hit a heavy bag without gloves all the time, but the style I practice use palm strikes, forearms & elbow strikes purposely to avoid damaging the less protected knuckles. Plus, it just feels like you can generate a lot more power with elbows & knees, so, while I grew up boxing and is still fond of it, I don't train it for defense. Also, I'm tall with long arms, so usually attacker's strategy is to rush me, so making sure to practice the closer quarter strikes so it's more instinctive in an ambush scenario seem practical.

Thanks for sharing. I've trained and taught in a traditional martial art for twenty-four years, and bare-handed heavy-bag training is a staple in my regimen. As you noted, this is the optimum means of conditioning the hands for hard contact. I also employ a makiwara and other contact gear for the same purpose. For those starting, the key is not to rush the process of conditioning. You are building bone mass and toughening the skin and underlying bursa with the repeated stress of hard impact. But this process takes years to fully develop. Most damage, such as torn skin, or even broken bones, can be averted with patience (learn from my mistake: I stress-fractured my arm early-on in my training with poor technique combined with excessive application). Start lightly for only a minute or two, and stop at first signs of skin damage (preferably before it tears) or bruising. Allow the hands to heal for a reasonable period before resuming. Gradually build up both duration and intensity. It's possible with this approach eventually to be able to sustain twenty-to-thirty minutes at the makiwara or heavy bag, employing straight punches or varied techniques, giving you hands that can do real damage if called upon.

One more subtle point to training without wraps is not only do you get better form but it also lets you learn how hard you can hit various surfaces without injuring your hand. And if I made my hand sore the day before, maybe this is a good day to train with 16 oz gloves to slow things down while they heal.

It’s definitely good to hit the heavy bag bare handed, you just gotta be mindful of how hard you’re punching especially before you have conditioned your knuckles at all. Whenever I hit the heavy bag without gloves on I typically focus more on speed and technique. Another good thing to help for people who don’t have that control is to get a bin of some coarse sand. Then you can both punch it lightly and grip the sand with each hand. This will condition your knuckles, increase your grip strength, and even condition your palms.

I have been wrapping 3 cloths in a tree and do a normal punch, not too hard not too soft every day, you harden your fist at a period of time, I have been doing this since I was a kid, now my fist is rock hard and I believe I can crack a person skull with my knuckle, even a hard and sharp edge doesn't pain me anymore, I can even crack a lock with my fist.

I used to do knuckle pushups using salt over cloth at first my skin ripped off but after healing now it's an easy job for me to do push ups and bare hand wall punch even I broke one desk with bare hand punch

Dose this over time add strength to the distal phalangeal joints? I find those joints to be the weakest area of the fingers when striking with a closed fist.

It took 2 years for my hands to be conditioned without pain. Now I hit the bag harder than most people in the world and I am 58. It is a Incredible feeling and addictive. One caution be careful with your wrist. Hit it square and don’t roll your wrist and focusing on form. You lose form, then you should back off on the power or stop. Know when your wrist is fatigue and stop to prevent injury.

Before I started boxing I would only hit the bag without gloves. And that hardened my fists significantly. And my hands aren’t damaged or broken and in fact I think now my hands are way more durable and are less likely to be injured weather it be a boxing fight or a self defense scenario. I think it also helps me in boxing as well because I have heavy hands from the increased bone density. Which adds to the impact of my punches.
