  • In this episode, Puja Mehra talks to economist Ila Patnaik about the complex challenges India faces as it strives to compete with China's export dominance. They talk about the uncompetitive infrastructure, higher labor and energy costs, and irrational tariff structures that hinder India’s manufacturing sector. Patnaik discusses the impact of China's post-COVID economic slowdown, its focus on exports, and the implications for India. She argues that India must address its internal economic issues before considering protectionist measures, and emphasises the need for a comprehensive strategy to counter China's export-driven model.
    ABOUT ILA PATNAIK
Dr Ila Patnaik is the Chief Economist at the Aditya Birla Group. In 2014 she was the Principal Economic Advisor to the Government of India. Japan and Germany dominated Chinese electronic market until 10-15 years ago; and dominated Chinese automobile market until this year 2024. China had never “struggled against” Japan or Germany, rather thanked them to brought good technologies and good products to China. And … Chinese learned from Japanese and German, it is why now Chinese produce better products than Japanese and German.
So rather than hate and struggle against Chinese, Indians should appreciate Chinese providing affordable and good quality goods, and try to learn from Chinese.

India should stop being too much obsessed with China and start cooperation for mutual benefit. When China grew it was not obsessed with US. So learn something from China.

only with competition, one can improve. if no country wants to buy , then there is no export. someone just want to buy before someone will produce it.. that's how the world works.

India fails to appreciate that China reached the top of the heap through sheer hard work and persistence, driven by a sense of destiny and pride. Many Indians have done so as well, but sadly it is not attributed to the same characteristic.

There are multiple factors leading China success, culture, traditions, history and customs are playing more important role.
Please don't simplify and labeled everything as "democracy Vs dictatorship "
The factors for Chinese success are:
1 China is secular society and no religion conflict in history.
      2. Farm land reformed and eliminated landlords
      3. Social equity and gender equality.
4 invested heavily on education, though China was very poor in 1950's but the literacy increased dramatically in a decade to 85% from 10%.
      5. Superpower is not Chinese goal. The Chinese students are taught no interesting to be Superpower in the school. It is very rare find Chinese netizens say they like to become a Superpower.
      5. From local to national level, all buplic servants and officers
are requested the bachelor degree as minimum pre-qualified get the position.
      6. Don't follow western ideology and remember the hundred years humiliation from colonists invaded.
      7. Birth control.

The thumbnail depicted at the beginning is totally wrong, the two fists are not equalling size, China fist should be 5 times bigger than India one.

The only solution is to force China to rises it exchange rate from 1 usd:7 rmb to 1 usd: 3.5 usd, like many year Japan does. but need 2 conditions, one is US admit China gdp is bigger than us, two is China not a sovereign country。Looks like impossible any soon.

“Force" does not apply to China. Nobody can force anything onto China today.

First of all, Modi should stop politics of hatred, and he should sincerely implement his own mantra of sabka saath sabka vikas. Gone are the days of doing thaanashaahi politics. Today, even a.small country in our neighborhood won't tolerate politics of hatred
