  • In this video we are joined by Emily from Gemm Aquatics to discuss some helpful tips and tricks for leaving your fish tanks when you go away on holidays. I have an African Cichlid tank that I water change weekly and a river tank full of rainbowfish (and some plants...), so working out how to care for my tanks while I'm away was a big consideration.

    Emily owns an aquarium maintenance business and regularly house sits aquariums. She also previously worked at the Brisbane aquarium store, Tech Den (you might remember Emily from my tour there!). Emily was able to run us through how to prepare for going away, and some common pitfalls people make. Hopefully having an idea on these will help the process go as smoothly as possible when you're away!

    A couple of suggestions for your tank. Get yourself a power board from Bunnings and use a couple of screws to mount it high up on the inside of your cabinet. That way your cables are neat an up out of the way without any possibility of water splashing them or running down the cables and blowing the fuses. Also forget the Bluetooth app, put your lights on a simple mechanical timer (about $15 from Bunnings) and you’ll never have to worry about them again.

      One thing I prefer about wireless lighting setups is gradual ramp up and down of lighting, so it isn't a sudden flick on/off. I like to think it's a bit more natural for the fish (I sync the lights with sunrise and sunset in my locale, giving them 30m to get to full intensity), and it's nicer for people around the house too.
      One thing worth looking for is a wireless plug which remembers settings. This way, if networks are down or the power is temporarily lost, they'll hum along using the last settings they got. They'll work a bit like a mechanical timer, using the last settings given in perpetuity.

    I used to work FIFO and would be away for two weeks at a time. One of the best things I ever bought were a pair of Eheim auto feeders that I could load with dry food and set and forget. As to lights, I had them set up on a $15 mechanical timer from the local hardware store.

    Looks like you have a great person taking care of your babies while you're away. Good time of the year to go to Canada and the Northern States, I know you'll have a great time !!! Montreal has awesome French bakeries and food. The northern States has insane pizza and sub shops, also my favorite seafood along the New England Coast. I always gained weight whenever I worked up there.

    Sorry off topic but did I hear correctly your tank temperature is only 23 deg, is that your normal tank temperature I’ve always thought they had to kept higher up around the 26 deg mark, might explain my high aggression never thought of keeping temp so low

    Having to synchronise lights after they're unpluged is such a bad design. Do you have an idea why it's done this way even on expensive lights?
    Bluetooth light would need a battery to keep track of the time, but if it has WiFi then there is no excuse.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  ปีที่แล้ว

      They're fine most of the time, but I have had times where they've been a pain if I've knocked them out. It could be more an issue with my phone's Bluetooth and my super unreliable wifi though than the lights themselves though 😬

    • @zlamanit
      @zlamanit ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kaityscichlids I'm using Fluval and after unplugging (even for a second) the internal clock resets to midnight. It doesn't really forget any settings - the light will turn on after about 8 hours.
      It seems like an easy fix, and I'd gladly pay even 10% more for the light to continue working so it's hard for me to understand why this isn't done better.
      Anyway, enough complaining. Thank you for the video. I'm also leaving for 3 weeks next month but both my tanks are heavily planted and understocked so I can just leave them with an auto feeder.
