HOW can someone who is a minalamist have enough clothes, bags, shoes for 4 women? I went through MY walk in closet and donated half of it to the animal shelters thrift shop in SAVANNAH, GA. All the proceeds go to the animals NOT to the multi millionaire owner of Goodwill.

Malissa, I really don't understand why you watch my videos because all they seem to do is annoy you. You've made it clear through multiple comments that you think I have too many clothes. Maybe just let it be?
Also, Goodwill is a non-profit organisation.

Tell me about it! 😂 I think we just get better at spotting clutter as we go along, and we learn to live with less. But more does sneak in. My daughter, for instance, brings home a lot of paperwork and projects from school, summer camp, etc. It adds up quickly!

You have the space, they are all well maintained and organized, and you love them! Why do they care? You do you, Laura! I consider myself a minimalist but after I decluttered many clothes, I found I was missing the variety, fast forward 6 months and losing 20 lbs, i dropped three sizes so I decided to buy all new clothes (most thrifted) and have variety back into my closet, I am much happier… my home is minimal, but we are to keep or have what brings us joy

I loove that you show this litterally in your wardrobe! Don’t let anyone especially people you don’t even know to try and tell you what to do! It is your life and your decisions what to do or not do 😘 Love your show and your humor 🥰❤️

Firstly you’ve never claimed to be a minimalist so having a lot of clothes isn’t a problem and none of anyone’s business. If you love them and have room for them then great!
I do agree with the concept of wearing each item, when I have forced myself to do this I’ve found I was able to declutter things I thought I loved or have saved for years but didn’t really fit well or make me feel confident.
Sometimes I only had to wear the item for an hour or so to make a decision because it was just so obvious.
I love all your vibrant and cheery clothes!

I did this. In 2019 I did a no buy for a year. I went through all my clothes and got rid of some things right off the bat. Next my rule was to wear everything once. Some things I just tried on and immediately went nope and it went. Other things I did the wear it all day like you. Then the pandemic hit so I extended it another year. In the end I got rid of 90% of my clothes. I realized everything was pretty much worn out or out of style. I carefully replaced my wardrobe over the next year but on a much smaller scale and then I unexpectedly retired! So here I am starting the process over! Oi

This challenge will make interesting & fun fashion content- would love to see all of the outfits you put together throughout the year, what you decide to declutter or keep, and why. (I do think it's odd that someone thought you have too many clothes & decided to share that with you. Though, you are brilliant for turning a potentially negative comment into something positive.)

    "It's because I'm Type A, OK?!" Yes, perfectly relatable and A-OK. 😂
Thank you for being a real person on a real decluttering journey.
The naysayers might not realize that you hang a lot more than most people who have dressers.
I've done several rounds of decluttering and get more selective each time.
So far, I've donated everything that doesn't fit, clothes that are too short for my liking, and I've greatly reduced the number of polyester pieces in my wardrobe.
For bottoms, I only ever wear pants so it's time to challenge myself to wear some capris and skirts or get rid of them if I can't wear them in my daily life. Thanks for the inspo!

I don’t think you have too many clothes you can tell you love clothing. It’s neatly organized and fits in your closet and is not packed full. Your allowed to indulge something you love. I mean the rest of your home is pretty well decluttered.
I have paired down my clothes quite a bit but I do think I have too many only because I’m not wearing them all. I keeping them just in case????
Most days I just wear my yoga shirt and a T-shirt around the house and only put in an “outfit” a couple a week when I run errands.
Some days I think I should get rid of more and other days I’m like but the do fit nicely in the closet and it’s not stuffed in there.
I probably will just keep chipping away at it but by bit and get rid of more little by little.

I have the opposite problem, I wear the same outfits multiple days because I minimized almost all my clothes in our move. I work from home so it's not usually a big deal but I pared down a bit too much and kept basics only and nothing to go with the basics. I love this idea though! It's so true - trying on an outfit isn't the same as wearing it the whole day.

I have a 3ft long clothes rod for all my shirts and dresses and 2 small baskets. I only have so little because I purged my closet in an emotional fit after I had my 5th child. Nothing fit. I was so upset I bought a few things and decided to wait and see where my weight settled. I figured out during the waiting I didn't want or need a bunch of clothes. I had a few things that fit well and that was best for My mental health.

One tip i have is to have a box or basket in the wardrobe so once you’ve done the laundry and you are putting stuff away fill the box with anything ripped, stained, too small, don’t love and uncomfortable. I would say it’s unfair to say you have too much because it’s your clothes and if you love clothes that’s fine. But yeah I’m probably guilty for reaching for the same and also wearing items that are ripped or not wearing items because they are for really special reasons and those reasons never come!
I may join on this challenge! I need to do clothes this week!

Oh, we are sist’as for sure..I too am doing another reverse hanger experiment. We are still waiting to get into our new house, so finally I’ll have all my clothes together soon and I’ll be able to try this ‘365-try’ challenge with you. By the way, I love this video because I felt like I was in you closet door chatting about this “hack”. Last week I tried to find a fabric/textile recycler in my new community, but no luck. I refuse to let material waste. So now I need to take a load to the city on my next trip. Thanks for sharing. ❤. Here’s a hack idea…when Mum comes to visit and shop, put your least liked items in a backpack. As you buy something to replace those, drop the old ones at a donation spot on the way home. What do you think of that idea?

What a dreamy closet! We have what is probably adequate closet space, but we don't utilize it well, and my husband is terrible about decluttering stuff. He just wears what's easily available and things get shoved to the back of his closet, never to be seen again. LOL
My mind was properly blown by the idea of one load of laundry per week. My husband's clothes alone are four loads per week. Part of it is we are large people, and he has a sweaty job. 💦
I melted irreparable holes into the backs of a skirt and a nightgown as I cuddled too closely to our fireplace of a cold winter's eve.

People automatically assume that everyone is a minimalist now. 🙄 I like to keep only a handful of items (20ish tops/sweaters/jackets category, week-ish worth of pants week-ish worth of dresses) just cause I get stressed out and like simplicity but that doesn't mean everyone else has to. Heck, some minimalistic type of people don't apply it to their clothes but will to some other areas. We're not robots. We all gotta figure out what works for us.

This challenge made me think of what I did presummer. I had become so used to wearing the same outfits that I went without doing my laundry for 2-3 weeks. It forced me to choose clothes that I hadn't worn in awhile. I'm so glad I did it, as it gave me a renewed love for clothes in my wardrobe. Also, it made me realize, wow, if I really pushed it, how long I could wear a new outfit every day. Shocking, for some enough clothes for a week is more than enough clothing. I'm always getting rid of stuff, but I'm glad to have options and variety. Dresses are also hard for me.

I've been doing this "naturally" my whole life without even realizing it. I've never really had that many clothes so after major life changes, I've had to adjust my wardrobe as needed. I did have fairly large shoe and bag collections but they have been severely reduced. I predict 203 pieces and 41 pairs of shoes. 🙂

When it comes to donating worn or damaged clothes it really depends on the place you're talking things to. Some places really can't sell anything imperfect, some are ok with minor inconspicuous or easily remedied imperfections, and some also want the totally unwearable to sell in bulk as rags to textile recyclers. The only way to find out is to ask.
The greatest advantage of this approach is there's only a little extra effort at the start and then the end. In between the task is accomplished by the ordinary action of simply wearing clothes.

  • @christinen.6140
    @christinen.6140 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I never counted because I knew I had more than most of the minimalists I follow. Also assuming you didn't count socks, underthings, and bathing suits, I have 101 pieces of clothing and 11 pairs of shoes. (Plus outerwear, workout clothes and a small bin of clothes that don't fit, maybe 50 items total across those categories.)
I currently have ten hangers backwards in my closet and I know there are five shirts in my drawer that I don't wear but I'm not ready to let go of yet. I also have a small section of leggings and one of skirts I don't wear much anymore but I'm waiting to wear out rather than donate because I do wear them occasionally and I don't want to have to buy more. Everything else I own has definitely been worn in the last year.
I think you'll get down to 150 and 30 pairs of shoes, maybe less for the shoes. It's okay to be semi minimalist and like clothes. If you wear them and they make you happy, keep them. I do think there are things you're not wearing because when you were done turning around the hangers you said something about being dusty. Hangers get dusty when you're not wearing the clothes.
    It's a fun series. ❤

Thats the difference between America and the UK ...the fact there is an actual room for clothes!!!
If you have space, use it! Atleast you can shop through what you fancy wearing everyday.
Id love to have a space like yours and hang everything. I forget whats in my chest of drawers and constantly wreastling with them! 😂
As for the people who say there is too much... isnt it a woman thing!
We have shoes for different tasks, accessories, clothes that need to dress up , dress down , work , relaxed , garden , workout...
I mean everytime i go shopping for my boys its the tiniest section of a shop but the girls section is twice the size.. if not more!!!
Surely we all have something we have more of in a certain category.
Loved the chatty video by the way , lots of interesting views , stories and i love this concept..im in!! ❤ x

How timely! I am in the process of decluttering my closet and dressers. Planning to try on each and every item, but like your idea of actually wearing them for a day (with the exception of dress clothes I rarely wear) as I am retired and rarely dress up, but need to keep special items. I have a much smaller closet than you and must get rid of lots. I agree with you, I have clothes I just wear around the house and change every day, but if I change to nicer clothes to run errands or meet someone for lunch, I may only wear them for an hour or two and will wear again or perhaps twice more before washing them. Some of my lothes may be 20 -30 years old, but classic pieces and can't afford to replace with the same quality, if I could even find the same quality anymore. So much of modern clothing is junk, not made to last. Thanks for the motivation and ideas.

Love the idea of making an effort to wear everything. Might do the same. Sad that so many people think minimalism is a number. Minimalism is not getting rid of everything, period - it's getting rid of everything that doesn't serve you. If you wear all your clothes than keeping all of them is minimalism, regardless of the number. Also how many clothing items a person "needs" is highly dependent on weather, their lifestyle, etc. - not something anyone can tell over the internet! For instance, where I live temps range from -30F to 90F throughout the year. I will need much more variety of clothing than someone in a climate where it's e.g. 50F to 70F year-round.

I feel like you are being the most realistic about your wardrobe declutter. I also like my clothes and its been a very slow process in reducing the number. My weight fluctuates regularly due to heath issues and periods of treatment. It is better to keep things in that case, otherwise we will all be more wasteful buying and disgarding all the time.

I think you don't have to throw away things if you don't want to, be nice to yourself, give yourself time. Mabe you need a better system for storage. I have a thing for dresses, too, but I wear them all the time. Especially in the summer. Sundresses are what I live in! Last year I did a purge where I took out four huge garbage bags full to donate and I still need to take out more. I try to do it twice a year. I recently donated a pair of Aigner shoes I had bought for myself when I worked at Lazarus...so I had them for easily 15+ years. They were a beautiful burgundy patent leather and even though I had worn then tons, they still looked great. I was tempted to keep them, but they no longer fit my boho style and I know someone out there will find them and be thrilled with them, so I hope they're in a new home and being loved. Did you take your old heels that the sole came off up to DSW? They take them and give you points you can put toward a new pair. I think they recycle them, as the condition doesn't matter. :)

Adding another layer of making sure I actually wear everything is a really good idea, as I tend to gravitate back to the same pieces/combos all the time.
I'm sorry people have been criticising the amount of clothes you own, though, and agree with many other commenters here, in that you are (more than) allowed to have as many pieces as you like ❤

I did this with my handbags. I gave myself a year to use every handbag I had. I excluded a handful of beaded evening bags. I put a sock around the handles of the bag so that I would have to remove the sock to use the bag and at the end of the day, or when ever I felt I needed to change bags I would think if this bag was worth keeping. From November to November I kept less than half my handbags. I loved the idea of most of them ie: the shape, leather, color, but when I was forced to use it I either found it annoying (not cross body, too small etc) or it was a color I loved but that just didn’t go with any outfit I ever wore. I did this again last year and this year I haven’t had any desire to but another bag as I’m really content with the few I’ve ended up with. P.S. I sold a bunch of my handbags on the real real site and then donated the rest to Goodwill.

Love this chatty video and excited to follow along this closet journey! Can I add some video feedback, I noticed this in this one and your last one but the edges of the video are all blurred which is distracting and kind of makes my eyes uncomfortable as they keep trying to focus 😵‍💫 Just my observation 🤷🏻‍♀️ Love your content and videography otherwise 💗

Thank you! I'm using a new camera lens so still figuring it out.

Need vs want. Too much inventory to manage. Do yourself a favor and cut back. I can’t wait to see what the challenge reveals!

I don't find it difficult to manage. And I mean, if we're really getting down to it, I don't technically NEED very many clothes at all, only a handful to keep me protected from the elements. If we all kept only what we truly need, we'd have barely anything at all. 😉

Totally agree. I look at your closet and it looks great to me. Everything is well cared for and loved. You could declutter 90% and it'll just end up in a landfill. Will you be happier? I doubt it. I like choices and variety. If I had ten items of clothing to my name that wouldn't lessen stress for me, it would add to it. But everything I have has to be organized and cared for. We're all different

I think you’ll have a total of 223 items of clothing and 42 pairs of shoes. Good luck and feel challenged to give this a go too! Thanks SO much for all your ideas. ❤️

This definitely seems like a realistic guess! Let me know if you try it too!
