I am a widow volunteering several times a week at food give aways. We pick up from large grocery stores where by sell dates are ready to expire. I am shocked over the prices marked on pastries cakes for $22. or more when you could buy a mix and a can of frosting for so much less. Basic cooking is so much better than all of these prepared foods and better for you.

No joke. A Walmart brand cake mix is about 1 buck and we make individual mug cakes in a few minutes.

Was asked to bring a chocolate cake with chocolate icing to a SuperBowl Sunday get together. Dozen cupcakes $13. Deli cakes averaged in price. No neighborhood Walmarts in this tourist town. Cake mix would have cost me $2-3, same for can of frosting and one or two eggs about 30-50 cents each. Explored the frozen cake section and a brand name, small cake was on sale for $6. Small and easy enough to transport and the frosting done much nicer than I could pull off. Next time I will check closely for the cake mixes going on sale. Been a long time. They tend to go on sale as the baking powder expires. Was advised long ago, to add in a teaspoon or two of baking powder and the cake mix bakes up well.

I am not actually changing what I purchase but I always shop the ads and I don’t have to limit myself to a single store or shop days. I only shop for myself, and I am retired and I drive, so no one else is involved and grocery shopping is probably not as much an event for me. I don’t buy hardly any snack foods, cookies, candy, crackers, as I prefer to spend my calories on food. So I don’t see myself having to make changes. Confession, I do buy the occasional slice of red velvet cake off the Kroger bakery clearance rack. But I try to stay away from so much sugar.

Oh Dawn, I loooove the thumbnail!
I have started spending only $100AUS a week on food groceries. That's $65 US. This is for four people.
I spend $30 on Monday, $30 on Wednesday, $30 on Friday and $10 on Sunday.
It's a game changer for me. And it's working. No food is being wasted, easier to find in the fridge, and I only buy what I need.
Before I was buying loss leaders and markdowns but would also get this and that and my weekly bill was at least $200AUS.
My son went shopping with me and I challenged him to fill our basket for only sixteen dollars as we had spent fourteen in another store. He asked me if we were poor! I said not at all , this will save us $5200 a year and be more creative. He lit up and got cracking ! We aren't poor, I'm just smart.
Biggest expense is fresh fruit so it must be seasonal and varied. Cabbage, potato, carrots, onions, tofu, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, lentils and flour are cheap.
That's my two cents worth! 😊

You can even make it at home if you have a heavy duty food processor. Roast unsalted penuts and while they're still warm, process them until they turn into butter. People add honey/sweatener and a pinch of salt. Careful while handling the butter though, it might come out hot.

I love carbonated water, plain and flavored. I have been using a Soda Stream for close to 20 years and am really happy with it. No more lugging of bottles or plastic or cans to recycle. I have a glass bottle version. But you can get models with plastic litre and half litre bottles so you can even bring soda to work. There is the initial investment but I have found it worth it. While not needed you can get some hard candy for that dish at Dollar Tree. Hard candy is also less of a temptation to over consume than many other types of candy. While at Dollar Tree you can usually find compartmented reusable containers where you can make your own Lunchable type boxes custom made to what you like for a lot less.

I end up saving money in the long run because the meat is so much more satiating than store bought beef and i also use less of it because of how they package it. Thats five dollars for two rib eye steaks, one pound of ground beef, one pot roast. The last time I priced a roast at Kroger it was over 30 dollars. Going to the farm is the way to go and you keep the farmer in business.

Like you, Dawn, I loved my sparkling water(s)! However, here in Ontario (Canada) they became outrageously expensive during Covid and have, of course, not come down in price. In fact they are higher than ever. Not buying those anymore. We don't have the variety of large supermarkets that you have in the States so there is little competition meaning prices are high. For example, I was looking for cheaper protein alternatives, and beans are obvious, but I don't like savory bean dishes. So I recalled that Japanese mochi (dessert) use adzuki beans as a filling. I bought some adzuki beans, cooked them, put em in a blender with a little sugar and imitation vanilla, &now I have a surprisingly good sweet spread for toast.

No snacks, no potatoes, no junk food, no fastfood, or no fake foods. I will spend money on affordable organic or healthy whole 'real' foods. Meaning, purchasing fruits with seeds. For example, wild blueberries, seed-in grapes with thick skin, origin pineapples, seed-in watermelons, organic berries(strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, wild blueberries). Shopping at a local farm, fruit stand, or farmer's market can be cheaper especially if you get the second choice produce or negotiate. Also, consider International grocery stores where the food is more affordable. Walmart has organic produce and Whole Foods carry their store brand which is more affordable.
No sodas, no alcohol(drinking water). I prefer Ralph's Cafe coffee beans over Starbucks. So I will continue to purchase bags of the Ralph's Cafe(organic Ralph Lauren) regular or Espresso organic coffee beans and continue to make coffee at my home. Coffee to be enjoyed hot and chilled in the fridge to be enjoyed later with stevia.
Substitute celery with homemade hummus instead of chips which is much healthier. Will substitute healthier snacks like boiled eggs, pistachios, fermented organic beef sticks, fresh fruit, raw salads, and etc. I'm lactose intolerant so I make vegan versions of milk or mylk using hempseeds. It's delicious with cinnamon, stevia to be chilled and enjoyed later as well. Consider coupons, Groupon, stores usually have a discount areas, sale items, eating more organic raw foods because it fills a person up for a long time and it's healthier. Consider a fish market that sell fresh whole fish and seafood. The more often you go the more you can negotiate.
    Dental Health:
Most big Universities have a Dental School. Since the students are supervised by Professors and students want to do well as a result, you as a patient will get great affordable service, most times better than professionals who own their own practice. And, Dental School will not over charge you or claim you have a cavity when you don't.

Very wise! I'm doing something new. If I don't see a tag for a price on an item but I really want it, I think about how much it's worth to me. I put a price in my head. Then when I get the to the cashier, I ask them to scan it to let me know how much it is. If it's above the price I had in my head, I just tell them no thank you. I've done that occasionally in the past, but now I'm religious about it. I've never had a cashier give me a problem when I do that. For example Aldi had a special buy on real Mexican hand made tamales in corn husks. I made them with a friend once and it's a happy memory. I wanted my daughters to experience the real thing, but when I checked out, they were $9 for 4 small servings. It was an easy no.

I don't buy ground turkey, farmed fish, fish that is high in mercury, and small yogurts anymore. Ground turkey changed a lot about 15 years ago, in texture and flavor, across all of the brands. I began to have real concerns about what was ground up in there. I quit buying ground turkey. * I also do not buy "Atlantic" salmon or other farmed fish, like tilapia or shrimp, or tuna (canned or otherwise). You have to go on line to find out if certain fish are farmed. I had questions about an Aldi brand in the frozen food section - everything there is farmed, except the wild salmon. I had no idea. I'm glad I looked. A lot of the fish is too high in mercury, and the farmed fish/shrimp has flukes that do not die during normal cooking. I don't think those are clean enough to eat, anymore. That is really sad. * When the standard serving of yogurt downsized from 8 to 6 oz. I quit buying it. I think the last time I looked the new size is at 4-5 oz. I buy the quart size of yogurt, and portion it up.

I don't think there is anything I will be cutting out completely because my budget is already at a comfortably low level. However, I completely agree about only shopping the loss leaders in stores. I am fortunate to have 3 stores all within a block of each other so I can hit each for just the loss leaders quite easily. You mentioned candy, the only time I do buy it, and I may actually stock up is right after a candy focused holiday, like Valentines Day. I will definitely swing by a store tomorrow and pick up a few bags for at least 50% off and then freeze it. I do not care if the wrap is "off season", no one has ever complained about a foil wrap being the wrong color. That way, if I do have company, I can grab a bag from the freezer. I have never bought an official "lunchables" because I don't eat meat, however, I do enjoy the convenience of a selection of little, easy to pick items so make up my own by pre-cutting the items and have them ready to load up a container. I think I heard them called "bento boxes" but I might be wrong on that. Love having those when I am on the road.

Compare the price per pound of meat (on sale) to the price per pound of cereal. You might be surprised. Boneless skinless chicken thighs this week for under 2 buck a pound. Boston Butt Pork Roast under 1.50 a pound. Get those sales girl!! Go in the store with blinders on and give yourself a pat on the back when you come out with only the things on your list. Make mug cakes from $1 Walmart mix. I gave silicone baking cups (for microwave use), a couple of cakes mixes, and instructions as Christmas presents to people with sweet tooths. Got some great feedback.

I don’t eat beef and I only like 2 brands of ground turkey that’s only sold in regular grocery stores, so I am always going to multiple grocery stores each month 😩 Idk what I can cut out of my grocery list bc I was already shopping for what I need so just gonna keep trying to get as much as possible from low cost stores. 😞
