    Having Kentaro Miura pass away this year was very sad, I'd love to have seen his reaction when playing Elden Ring, in a weird way it would be an almost more sincere version of the Berserk world than the handful of actual Berserk games (abominations all) that were made.
    It'd be wonderful if they could do a Berserk themed DLC Expansion or something in the future, or better yet, just have From Software get the Gaming Rights and have them make a proper Berserk game. They could even start in The Golden Age, Bazuso as your first boss battle would still be awesome.
    (And if they REALLY wanted to push boundaries, maybe even make Donovan & Gambino a first boss pair if you know what I mean... ... Maybe as a flashback though... Cause, you know, that's a pretty intense way to start out a game.)

Don’t get me wrong I love Zelda and am incredibly excited to play the new one. But man souls borne games hit different. And playing with friends is the best! @@ThatDudeDavid252 Yeah that’s never a bad thing to do. Still I believe It’s going to look basically the same. Maybe a bit polished in some areas. It’s art style and lighting effects really carried the atmosphere for me. It was somewhat beautiful despite its blurry look. Unfortunately the frame rate was worrying at times.
      There were definitely some led downs they could improve on. As you mentioned the enemy variety was a joke in the first game. Even though they were well designed, you got the feeling that they never really changed during the game and so it got repetitive pretty quickly. With the weapons it was pretty much the same.
      The world also lacked content for me and the side quests were mostly poor and unrewarding. Also proper dungeons were fairly missed and the main story didn’t deliver, especially the ending.
      Overall it was still a very good game, but they have so much room for improvements for its sequel.
      They surely will expand the world, the question is to which extend they will do so. I have my doubts if the switch is able to handle it..visiting basically the same world again for most parts of the game doesn’t really feel right.

    On the topic of Dark Souls 2 and 3 being more linear than Dark Souls 1, that is true, but there's still a ton to explore in the other games as well and multiple paths and hidden areas/bosses. i'll just tack on: Dark souls 2 is deinitely a little lower on quality, because it got a "rebuild from the ground up" halfway through it's dev cycle, but I'd argue its DLC shines MORE than ds3's. it feels like a grand continuation of not the story, but the themes and background of ds2

    • @weaverquest
      @weaverquest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      All souls games are linear essentially. DS1 and especially Demon's Souls let you some freedom of choice in which areas you want to tackle first but levels themselves progress in linear fashion and everything converges into a single path muttiple times before finishing the game. The specialty of Souls game worlds and levels in my eyes are their complex, sometimes labyrinthian design that are interesting, challenging and rewarding to explore and get your head around. All Souls games have this quality. I am curious whether Elden Ring will be able to incorporate this kind of design into an actual open world game.

    • @pissant42
      @pissant42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@weaverquest I get what you're saying but you're a little off the mark there. DS1 has several areas like Dark Root Garden and Blighttown that can be accessed and progressed through in multiple different ways. Its true theres often a conventional way to progress but theres also several ways to go off the beaten path. The same simply can't be said about DS2 and 3

    • @weaverquest
      @weaverquest 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pissant42 Still very little opportunity to go off the beaten path even in DS1. In fact I can't really think of any other example except Dark Root Garden through the dragon valley and into Blightown shortcut/skip which was probably just a by product of the effort to connect levels with shortcuts (which was crucial since you can't warp in DS1 until the second half of the game unlike every other Souls game). So what I am basically saying is that all Fromsoft games up until now emphasized linear level design.

    I did not expect to see Arlo covering Elden Ring, let alone enjoying it! Unfortunately I don't think there is a network test for PC, so I didn't get in, but I've been watching every Elden Ring video that comes my way to try and sate my thirst for this game!

    Honestly, the things on the ground make it more rich, and bearable. Yeah, it's hard, and it sucks, but you aren't alone. If others can do it, I can strive to reach those same heights. Without them, it's even more of a depressing and hopeless experience. Good metaphor for life really

    From what I have read the “main dungeons” are where you find the mega bosses and those “dungeons” are like the areas of a normal souls game. So you have your mini dungeons like shrines in breath of the wild and your open world to explore with big scary monsters and over world bosses. But the traditional souls areas are spread around and you fight the main bosses in them

      There's stuff to like but it's *extremely* rough around the edges, probably too rough honestly, have you seen those Mimic hit boxes?
      Aside from Sekiro pretty much every souls entry has had jank but 2 dials it up to a 10.
      It's not valueless of course but it has many glaring issues, the hate bandwagon may be excessive but the fanboys who claim it's some kinda spectacular masterpiece are in denial.
      It is a very flawed and rushed experience with some solid aspects but also sorta misunderstands the point of its series, not an irredeemable blight nor a well produced execution of game design.

    Totally with you on playing offline. Even apart from not being interested in invasions or engaging in PvP, I always hate seeing the messages and bloodstains and ghosts littering MY GAME when I’m trying to take in the world’s atmosphere and layout. Most of these games offer the offline option from the start, but when they don’t, I just turn off my network settings.

    Love that you're getting into this game as I love your content and love FromSoftware :)
    Seriously, you should give DS3 and Bloodborne a chance though. They are more linear in terms of the core structure, but you still do a whole lot of exploration and getting lost since every ''level'' folds into itself in a labyrinthic fashion and they are still great at that.
    As for Elden Ring, we already know it will have (at least) 6 ''Legacy Dungeons'' that'll be the more classic Dark Souls experience you are asking for.

    Elden Ring feels like FromSoftware coming full circle back to their King's Field games + Shadow Tower. Those games were open-world Western RPGs with very dungeon-esque designs (although they were played from the first-person on the PS1).

    The reason I have a lot of faith in from software for an open world game is their games always have massive enemy variety and a ton of bosses, so you know when you explore you're going to find all kinds of new and interesting enemies everywhere you go, on top of interesting environments as well. And since the games are challenging and finely balanced, finding rewards will be even more rewarding. Those are some of my biggest gripes with breath of the wild, you have a beautiful and interesting world to explore with really cool landscapes and different ways of traversing them and interacting with them, but you only ever find the same enemies, more shrines, and the game is easy enough that rewards don't feel as rewarding as they should.

    I'm with Arlo. It took me 3 years since I first played part of Dark Souls Remastered, but now I finally get it. I understand the series. I get the draw, the appeal, and making a Souls game in an open world that capitalizes on that mystery, beauty, and engrossing nature of the world without losing the difficulty sounds incredible. Hopefully the dungeons, especially the bigger ones, have that same tight and interwoven level design of the previous games. If it does, then I'll be head over heels with this game
