One of the most vulnerable and heartwarming scenes from The Office followed immediately by an unspoken 'that's what she said' moment between Pam and Michael. What more could you ask for?
I find interesting that Pam, although emotionally devastated, greets Michael with scorn, almost as she was thinking “ow, God, not him…” She was hoping for Prince Charming (Jim) or some friend, but all she got was her annoying boss. But it was him the only one who understood how much passion she had for her work as an artist, just like he had for his work as a paper salesman. Him saying “I’m proud of you” is something that he’d want someone to tell him, but never happened. I believe that this is the first moment in which Pam allows herself to see beyond Michael buffoonery and truly appreciate his qualities.
That’s how it is in real life sometimes. The people you least expect to be there, are the ones who come through. It’s what makes The Office so special. I haven’t seen this episode in 10 years and I remember this scene very well.
I love how it's linked with the end, when Pam gets it back before they gone. I think that in this season (3) Michael finally became a good man, but with some contestable actions, even though this, his intentions were always the best, he just doesn't knows how to do or say it in the right way.
He didn’t even understand why what he said could be so meaningful to her. He just said what he thought about it. Truly one of the best scenes in the entire show. I always remember it
Nobody watch her picture. Her boyfriend came, with no interest, just because she told him to. Her co-worker criticized her work behind her back. It's Michael who stoped by, came only for her, and say what he thought.
"I dont see a... price." Man, that gets me in the feels. Its super important for artists to feel appreciated. It takes a LOT for someone to show their art to the public. I dont think ive met a single one who felt a little bit anxious about it.
This scene is a beautiful portrayal of Jenna Fischers raw talent as an actor she barely had any lines and portrayed to the audience exactly what her charecter was going through
I like how Pam says "Oh Michael" in an unenthusiastic way at 1:06. She definitely expected Michael to make some sort of stupid joke that would hurt her even more that night. It makes the scene that much more impactful.
I don't really think that that's what she meant by "oh michael". Ig she said that because she didn't expect him to come there and him coming was a surprise
I loved seeing the phases in Pam's facial expressions. First it was embarrassment. Her art was already bashed before and she was apprehensive showing it to Michael. Then she was staring at Michael trying to determine if his praise was genuine. Then she realizes it was genuine and she felt emotional.
@@praketh1056honestly, I partly agree with OP tho. Like yeah, she’s wrapping up and feeling at her lowest. Probably 90% of her coworkers would’ve brought out a similar reaction. But also the fact that it was Michael of all people definitely warrants a tad bit of disappointment from her. She already expects him to be inappropriate and stupid, which is why his genuine response especially threw her off. And this is especially highlighted with the “Chunky” joke, because she’s constantly expecting something inappropriate from him at all times.
Honestly, one of my favorite lines in this scene is when Michael says “I had to race across town.” It’s a line that’s easily overlooked, but it shows that Michael’s attendance at Pam’s art show was in no way convenient to him, yet he still made time to do it. That’s how much he cared about supporting her.
2:38 Always loved the sincerity in Michael's face when he says "Do you wanna half?" I remember my first time seeing this and thinking they were going to ruin this wholeseome scene with some perverted joke, turned out Michael quite literally had a "Chunky" and even offers half of it to Pam, making it even more wholesome than it already was. One of the best scenes in the entire show for sure.
You can tell Roy was only there to show Pam that he cares about her passion now (but actually doesn't) while Michael really said what came to his mind naturally.
Yes, absolutely! She almost married Roy, and his 'compliment' to her art means nothing, especially as he tried to justify leaving early because he looked at everything.
This is Michael at his selfless best. After being betrayed and humiliated by his own employee (Ryan), he really showed how much he cares and loves his coworkers. Truly beautiful. I really started enjoying Michael's character development from this moment. God what a show
It’s heartbreaking to see how the whole first half of the scene is Pam looking at Michael in amazement that someone is actually interested in her artwork. She was also betrayed and humiliated by her boyfriend and “friends” in the office. Michael and Pam are the best combo on this show.

You know what? That's true. He took it he was just expressing his thoughts on the drawing not knowing his comments, his reactions, it couldn't have come at a better time. Great scene.
“I am really proud of you.” 😭 This scene gets me every time. This is where the brilliance of the show’s writers, and how they fleshed out the characters shines. Here are two people that are so crushed from the events of their day, events that make them question their value and worth, and they come together for each other without even understanding just how much.
Like he said to Dwight in the stairwell after he came back to the office he couldn’t think of anything but Pam and he had to leave, it makes sense why he’s not there
When she says thank you and his response is “what?”…he was being so honest, he genuinely didn’t realize how impactful his words were. One of my favourite scenes!
Well, actually it wasn't Michael the one who ruined the moment. Most of the time he wants to be funny, but this time, the joke was told by the plot itself. He never had the intention of making fun of Pam.
The “I’m proud of you” broke me. I relate with Michael in the sense that no one’s probably ever told him they are proud of what he’s accomplished. It feels so good to give others what you subconsciously crave the most. W Michael & W Pam moment.
I never thought a line like "That is our building that we sell paper" could be so moving. To say Steve Carell is a great actor would be an understatement.
0:42 I tear up at that part. The dude calls her art hotel art, and she’s right there. This is proof that you should watch what you say because you never know who’s around. I feel so bad for Pam. Oscar’s date’s words were so cruel and just the simple look on Pam’s face as she overheard it showed how devastated she was then Michael came in ‘to save the day’.
@@tigertank06 the thing that made it sting was the kernel of truth in it. This is while Pam is still foundering with Roy after rebuffing Jim. Gill says real art takes “honesty and courage”. Oscar agrees they aren’t “her strong suit”.

You found the word that suits Pam so well. She is wholesome and sooo vulnerable. But at same time if Jenna had to play Pam as a wild bombshell type she could do that too. Great actress!
It's one thing to say you're proud but to buy the work in question, frame it, and then eagerly hang it up for all to see proves he truly was proud of her work. It wasn't the support Pam wanted, but it was the support she needed.
Even though Michael can be really annoying at times, and inconsiderate. At the end of the day, he still cares about everyone in the office (except Toby) and sees them as family.
Jenna Fischer's acting is so amazing here, just look at her facial reactions in the different scenes. And these earlier episodes were so well written compared to season 6 onwards, the quality really dropped particularly season 8 and 9 except the finale.
I think Jenna can evoke so much emotion as an actress with her physical presence - her understated dress and classic expression from those eyes of hers. Once she disappeared in season 5 to NYC I missed these scenes.
I wasn't a fan of the show. But I finally gave it a chance and this episode had me in tears. I'm an artist and I've been exactly there. Hearing people's true opinion. Not having a single word or anyone acknowledge my expression. No friends or family. Then someone even a person that doesn't relate to you comes and say wow. Just one wow can make your heart and soul feel such a joy. Love this episode.
“I am really proud of you.” Goes to show how just the tiniest bit of recognition and kindness, even from someone you don’t know that well, can make a world of difference to a person.
One of the happiest moments in the office. Pam didn't expected anyone and out of all people she expected Michael. Just shows how good of a boss Michael really is.
“I am really proud of you.” I always like the way he said this because by her reaction, she very much needed to hear it, but the way he says it he very much needed to say it. Like they needed this moment together.
This is when Michael first showed Pam that he really cares about her by being honest about her art and being kind to her something he rarely is and its nice to see this side of micheal being a good friend to pam.
With all the amazing moments this show have, this is for sure at the top 10 for me, actually really emotional and shows what a great character is Michael ♥
You can see when Michael says "I am really proud of you" he has a subtle hint of his own emotions in his face. You can see the understanding, he wants so badly to make everyone proud of him as the leader of the office that he connected with Pam on a very visceral level. Human interaction is beautiful.
God I love these moments when this silly comedy pulls back the quirks of Michael for just a moment to let us see what a true heart of gold he really has 🥲
Most of the comments focus on how Michael saved Pam from what was a personally and emotionally devastating night, but forget that it was also Pam’s artwork that also saved Michael after the emotionally devastating day he had earlier with with Ryan which made him feel like selling paper was a deadend job….
Scenes like this are what made The Office a masterpiece. This has real human emotion and drama, without any need for violence or over the top situations. I mean every scene brings home something profound about the characters or the moment in their lives they are living through. Roy going to the art show just to say he went and claim being a good boyfriend, and Pam realizing he doesn't care about her passions. Oscar and his boyfriend are kinda dicks, but they aren't wrong and brutally inform Pam about a flaw in herself and her dream of being an artist. And then after Pam has taken an emotional beating (one I think she actually did need a little), Michael swoops in to restore her hope in herself, and not with some big inspiring speech or whatever, but by just really looking at her art and finding the small spots where Pam was brave enough to actually put her heart into her painting. And the cherry on the cake? Other than her own car, she only adds Michaels car, because he is such a big part of what makes DM so special to her. A+++++ scene
You nailed it but also worth mentioning is that the episode 'Beach Games' happens a few episodes later. The episodes draws to an end with Michael challenging his possible successors to walk across hot coals and Pam ,who was not being considered for the manager position, is the only one who does it. It was Oscar and GIl's harsh words that helped give her the courage to do this and then speak her mind to everyone in the office.
Another thing to love about this is Micheal missed an obvious chance for “that’s what she said” I think he wanted to but he didn’t because of the vulnerability Pam was expressing by hugging him
They both just had a bad experience and they got what they needed. He needed to see paper being used and she needed someone from the office to show up and appreciate her art.
This is what I love about Michael Scott. He’s an idiot. He always puts his foot in it. He consistently does offensive or detrimental things. He’s obsessed with gaining validation. But it all comes from a place of genuinely meaning well. He likes people and he wants them to like him. And despite finding him insufferable, the other characters know all of this too, so when he has moments like this, they know he’s being earnest and genuine and appreciate him for it as Pam does here. It’s great when we get genuinely great character writing in otherwise ridiculous shows.
We all are starving for words of encouragement. It's so easy to do. The fact Pam knew Michael was incapable of faking it made her break. Beautiful clip.
It's just the simplicity of reaction and emotion in this scene that makes it a gem of the series. Always gets me. No matter how ridiculous Michael's character is this simple showing of genuine appreciation of Pam makes it an instant classic. Bravo
This scene hits home for me so hard. My first semester in art school, we got to display our final projects in an art gallery for the First Friday art walk. My classmates art pieces were more contemporary, abstract art while mine was based on dynamic comic book superheroes. The type of people that were at the art walk were mostly art snobs so my project was largely ignored as comic book style art was still seen as childish. However one of my classmate's parents took an interest in my art and asked me a lot of questions about it. The joy Pam feels when Michael was impressed by her heart was so realistic as all it takes is one person to compliment your skill to feel appreciated.
It is so incredibly difficult and brave to bare your soul and display your artwork this way. I’ve done it and it’s incredibly hard to watch people walk by because they don’t get your art. One night I had a bad night out with my art and felt so dejected. I packed up and didn’t unpack my art again for like a week and I when I did there was a neatly folded hundred dollar bill in between my craftworks. Support your local artists, any way you can. Even a kind word is life changing.
This was the first episode I got emotional about. Out of all the people who came or was invited michael genuinely wanted to be there to support her. You can tell he likes to get involved with his workers like they are family to him. Half the time at occasions or events he tries to make people have a good time and this was that perfect moment. Love how he appreciates his workplace and how proud he is. You just can’t be mad at the guy for all the mistakes he’s made and continues to make when he does stuff like this ❤️ PS: don’t hate me but I started to dislike Jim when he started dating karen. Like homeboy couldn’t show up to pams show because he’s trying to prove what point now? 🤔
The more you watch the show you realize that Jim is a D-bag same with Pam like they think they are better than everybody. I saw the flaws in a lot of the characters that made me not like them too much. Except Dwight, he is the best.
He didn't want to go, because he overheard Pam and Roy saying they love each other. There was nothing to prove. He just didn't want to dredge up anything. It was self-preservation. After he had put himself on the line for her twice and been turned down, only to find out through secondhand sources that she had called off her wedding without telling him, only to realise he still had feelings for her when he returned to Scranton... only to see her walk out of Phyllis' wedding with Roy again out of nothing but sheer convenience, I don't blame Jim for the way he reacted. I really don't understand why fans come down hard on Jim, as if his behaviour is not at least understandable.
Honestly this is truly great writing right here. It’s not like Michael isn’t his usual oblivious self. But there’s no doubt throughout the series that he cares deeply for his staff (regardless of his stupid actions), and he made it a point to support Pam. Regardless of if her art was actually good or not doesn’t even matter to him, because he immediately saw the meaning behind what his employee did and admired that genuinely. That’s what a good boss does. And yes, that’s just a Chunky in my pocket 👍
Also keep in mind Michael had a lousy day that day even being mocked by his own employee. He is kind because of who he is, not because of who others are.
This is one of the most perfect scenes ever in the series, and in television in general. When Michael says to Pam: “That is our building. And we sell paper. I am really proud of you.” I lose it. Every time. I’ve watched the series 6 times all the way through, and I still can’t handle how beautiful and pure this scene is. ❤️
Throughout the show Pam goes out to several people to lighten their mood, cheer them up. This is the moment when the most unexpected person comes to cheer her up. The Office 🙌
"And we sell paper". After all the humiliation he went through at Ryan's school, he believes in his company and his employees. He's truly the best boss in the world.
micheal's innocence and childlike wonder is honestly so wholesome sometimes. "this looks like it could be traced" is a much better compliment than an adult might give credit for lol
This scene works on so many levels. Michael has just had his whole reason for being in business questioned at Ryan's school, so him saying “that is our building, where we sell paper” is a chance for him to reaffirm himself. It's unexpectedly moving, because we always expect Jim to be the one to be Pam's knight in shining armor riding to her emotional rescue. Who would have expected Michael, who usually just thinks of himself, being the one to be there for her when she needs someone? And then, Michael is always trying to inspire his workers with these big bombastic speeches. Here, he finally succeeds in inspiring someone, just by saying the simple words “I am really proud of you.” Moves me every time.
Michael showing up and the five little words of “I’m really proud of you” is all it took. Most of the time, it’s not a grand gesture or anything, but just a show of respect and kindness is all it takes.
I think this scene serves as a great example and reminder that quality acting can be shown without fancy shots or edits. Sure there's not anything crazy happening, like something in Gladiator, but their expressions and interactions are so authentic. Every time Pam responds, it's like I'm watching somebody's conversation in real life. Ironic, because it's not meant to be a serious show.
The writers and actors did an amazing job on this beautiful heart string tugging piece and switched it up so quickly with the still yet heart warming comedy. One of my favourites bits in the show👍💗

I have NEVER watched a full episode, but this makes me wanna.
Kinda feels like the whole time she's waiting for him to crack a joke, and he never does.
I love how it's linked with the end, when Pam gets it back before they gone. I think that in this season (3) Michael finally became a good man, but with some contestable actions, even though this, his intentions were always the best, he just doesn't knows how to do or say it in the right way.
that's why she followed him to uncertainty when michaels tries to build his own paper company.
Not only Pam but all of us as the audience. The character development in this show was masterful.
He didn’t even understand why what he said could be so meaningful to her. He just said what he thought about it.
Truly one of the best scenes in the entire show. I always remember it
Yep. He has no filter. He just said it. He was exactly proud of her. Nothing more, nothing less.
Nobody watch her picture.
Her boyfriend came, with no interest, just because she told him to.
Her co-worker criticized her work behind her back.
It's Michael who stoped by, came only for her, and say what he thought.
Millennial
I fully agree. 👍
@@jnfunvufb To be fair Oscar was supportive, just the guy he was with was terrible.
"I dont see a... price."
Man, that gets me in the feels. Its super important for artists to feel appreciated. It takes a LOT for someone to show their art to the public. I dont think ive met a single one who felt a little bit anxious about it.
"Pamcasso" That was so adorable
You know he was thinking of that one for the whole drive.

"It is a message, it is an inspiration, it is a source of beauty and without a paper it could have not happened unless you had a camera". XD
This scene is a beautiful portrayal of Jenna Fischers raw talent as an actor she barely had any lines and portrayed to the audience exactly what her charecter was going through
Her expressions say it all--a sign of a great actress.
@@davidl570 Yesss also when Jim asked her on a date for the first time!! Her expressions were amazing she really is a great actress!!
@@hessa9504 Yep, for sure!
She always did that, you could always tell what Pam was feeling, even in quotidian scenes. She's such a good actress.
@@Tontoquienloleation but the art is terrible
I like how Pam says "Oh Michael" in an unenthusiastic way at 1:06. She definitely expected Michael to make some sort of stupid joke that would hurt her even more that night. It makes the scene that much more impactful.
I don't really think that that's what she meant by "oh michael". Ig she said that because she didn't expect him to come there and him coming was a surprise
That’s a really shitty deduction. It was time to wrap up and nobody had come that’s why she was surprised to see Michael.
2:38
Always loved the sincerity in Michael's face when he says "Do you wanna half?" I remember my first time seeing this and thinking they were going to ruin this wholeseome scene with some perverted joke, turned out Michael quite literally had a "Chunky" and even offers half of it to Pam, making it even more wholesome than it already was.
He just wanted to smash n go
This is Michael at his selfless best.
2:24 This was hilarious and heart touching at the same time Michael didn’t know what Pam was thanking him for 😭
I broke my feet today because I kicked my computer because someone commented that my videos are bad! I hate unjustified criticism. Please wish me a speedy recovery, dear ki
You misunderestimate Michael.
@@AxxLAfriku criticism is never unjustified.
If you are so emotionally unstable you are going to damage your property and yourself because you cant deal with criticism then you are truly an unfit member of society and you DEFINITELY should not produce offspring to whom you will pass your genetic proclivities towards mental instability, nor should you create an environment in which to raise said children.
A lot of people don't get to hear that enough.
You explained it well❤🎉
Even Jimbo didn't show up. Michael has a heart of gold which, when his friends are involved, soars with the eagles nest.
He was with Karen back then and tried to keep distance from Pam
it was after jim and pam growing apart due to roy and karen
Like he said to Dwight in the stairwell after he came back to the office he couldn’t think of anything but Pam and he had to leave, it makes sense why he’s not there
I was waiting for that scene, for Jim to show up after his date with Karen but it never happened. This was better.
There's a deleted scene where Karen tries to rip off one of Pam's art show fliers... So she probably didn't want Jim to be there
When she says thank you and his response is “what?”…he was being so honest, he genuinely didn’t realize how impactful his words were. One of my favourite scenes!
Undoubtedly one of the most wholesome moment of the show
*Indubitably
The bird funeral was also so so wholesome
"Do you have something in your pocket?"
*"...chunky"*
He just HAD to ruin the mood. But this is still forever a legendary scene
Hi kim Jong-un, didnt know you watch the office. What are your thoughts on the russian war?
I'm really happy that he actually had something in his pocket
Well, actually it wasn't Michael the one who ruined the moment. Most of the time he wants to be funny, but this time, the joke was told by the plot itself. He never had the intention of making fun of Pam.
This is one of the scenes that makes Michael’s character whole. Not just the boss or person they portray in most episodes.
As an artist, this made me tear up. Hearing someone so honestly express love for your work makes the hours put into it always worth it!
And Michael having been there to compliment her and say he’s proud, is the icing and made me cry 😭 and yes, guys cry too. I’m soft lol I tear up easily at moments like this in television or film.
There will always be people that will be critical in our improvement. They may disagree to what we did/ are working on but despite all that there will always be someone who will believe in you.

Oscar’s date’s words were so cruel and just the simple look on Pam’s face as she overheard it showed how devastated she was then Michael came in ‘to save the day’.

"That's what I said", but seriously it was. I fully agree.
This is such a brilliant scene. It showcases how even the slightest show of empathy can mean the world to someone stepping out of their comfort zone.

Both actors are superb here. Pam’s “Thank you” would break the hardest of hearts.
It's one thing to say you're proud but to buy the work in question, frame it, and then eagerly hang it up for all to see proves he truly was proud of her work. It wasn't the support Pam wanted, but it was the support she needed.
She didn't deserve it either

“I am really proud of you.”
Goes to show how just the tiniest bit of recognition and kindness, even from someone you don’t know that well, can make a world of difference to a person.
One of the happiest moments in the office. Pam didn't expected anyone and out of all people she expected Michael. Just shows how good of a boss Michael really is.
“That is our building. And we sell paper”
Every once in a while, I come back to see this scene. It's just so fulfilling.
You can see when Michael says "I am really proud of you" he has a subtle hint of his own emotions in his face. You can see the understanding, he wants so badly to make everyone proud of him as the leader of the office that he connected with Pam on a very visceral level. Human interaction is beautiful.
Never fails to make me cry. The fact that jenna was really emotional as steve said "Im prod of you",just adds more emotion to this scene.🥺
Michael and pam should've had more moments like this on the show
Although, Then they wouldn've been So special
The way he said "I'm really proud of you" you could see how much it meant to her
One of the best scenes in the whole show
God I love these moments when this silly comedy pulls back the quirks of Michael for just a moment to let us see what a true heart of gold he really has 🥲
Most of the comments focus on how Michael saved Pam from what was a personally and emotionally devastating night, but forget that it was also Pam’s artwork that also saved Michael after the emotionally devastating day he had earlier with with Ryan which made him feel like selling paper was a deadend job….
Another thing to love about this is Micheal missed an obvious chance for “that’s what she said” I think he wanted to but he didn’t because of the vulnerability Pam was expressing by hugging him
For once, there was no chance to say it because it was the last thing on his mind.
Micheal had one of worst days that day, but he made Pam happy at the end of the day
They both just had a bad experience and they got what they needed.
I love how Micheal is actually an awesome person when he's honest and not trying to hard to be liked
One of the most memorable scenes. Right up there with jim and pams engagement
This is why Michael Scott is one the best characters of all time. Moments like these.
2nd most emotional scene from the office for me!! Michael and Jim's conversation at the last day of his office will always be at number 1!!!
The best part is that Michael has no goddamned clue how much this means to her.
The best part about mike, for better or worse, is his sincerity.
Seeing how genuine Michael's compliments were meant everything to her, such a beautiful scene.
You just can’t be mad at the guy for all the mistakes he’s made and continues to make when he does stuff like this ❤️
PS: don’t hate me but I started to dislike Jim when he started dating karen.
I love that that painting stayed up until the very end until Pam took it with her when they turned the lights off in the office.
micheal's innocence and childlike wonder is honestly so wholesome sometimes. "this looks like it could be traced" is a much better compliment than an adult might give credit for lol
This is why it pays to get comedy actors with depth. Comedies with little moments of heart are some of the best of the genre.
"Your art was the prettiest art of all the art"
Still confused as to why Pam broke up with Roy he has such a way with words
He was there to win Pam back, he didn’t care about her art. At the beginning you hear him say, “It’s cool if I go, I saw all of them”.
That's the most disingenuous thing someone can say to an artist. You can see that after roy said that, pam immediately cringed.
It comes off as fake

Michael showing up and the five little words of “I’m really proud of you” is all it took. Most of the time, it’s not a grand gesture or anything, but just a show of respect and kindness is all it takes.
I think this scene serves as a great example and reminder that quality acting can be shown without fancy shots or edits.
Sure there's not anything crazy happening, like something in Gladiator, but their expressions and interactions are so authentic. Every time Pam responds, it's like I'm watching somebody's conversation in real life.
