Sam, enjoy your videos a lot and especially your honest, down to earth attitude. IMO, that mulcher head is just not built for the loads of light brush mulching, let alone woody vegetation. Thinking you need a heavier built head attached to a heavier excavator….or maybe your CTL. God Bless and Merry Christmas!
Amen Brother 🙏 sorry for all your troubles with the mower. I don't remember what Chris from letsdig has on his yamar just a thought. Thanks for sharing 👍
I ran a flail for twenty five years and what I carried with me is small bolt cutters for the wire. Also once you get it half cut you can rev the flail up and the rest of that wire will fly out.when the flail is unbalanced that’s hard on those seals and bearings .
That is good info on spinning the wire out! This thing blew a seal even before the tooth replacement. Had about 6 hours on it when the first one blew out. Thanks
Check the return line and make sure it is completely clear. Could also be an issue with some piece of trash stuck in the fittings. Just an idea if it is possibly a flow or pressure issue that keeps blowing the seal
Looks like a lemon on the motor Sam, would check if the shaft on the motor has excessive radial or end play on it before you pull the back cover off. Some have thrust shim washers that take the play out curious if your wasn't in spec when built and is putting side load on the seal pushing it out. Just something to ponder on before you pull apart again.

Good morning Matt. Your videos are real, frustration comes with a job and I appreciate that you don’t hide it. sorry you are having all that trouble. That Bible verse Philippians 4:5 I share that a lot and lean on that. keep sharing my friend. God bless.🙏🤠
I can relate with your experience here. I purchased a brand new tractor and implements. Boy was i happy. It made my homestead life so much easier as well as opening the door for me to make some money on the side. I hadn't hit 50 hours and was on my 3rd time of sending it back to the dealer for repairs. The third function quit working on me, then the lever for the front loader had a piece break off, and then the drain plug snapped off the radiator while i was brush hogging. I was getting furious. I had a brand new tractor, I had been able to get a lot done in a little time, but the constant breakdowns just drove me crazy. It's a half a tank of fuel one way for me to take that tractor to the dealer. Roughly $50 in fuel for a round trip. Then the time I'm without the equipment. I've been fortunate that everything has been covered by warranty, but the frustration is real. Operator error has cause me to dent the pto cover and I messed up a pto shift knuckle, but that is small things considering. My wife slightly bent the front loader, or so we suspect it was her anyway. She hit a tree and after that it was bent, or that's when we noticed it anyway. So grading isn't the easiest thing to do with it now. Being able to rely on the machines, equipment, and implements is crucial. So far I've been fortunate with my mini excavator.
Hello Sam, All of us who do this type of work owe you a big thank you. I was about to purchase this exact same model flail until I saw your video regarding the blown seal and the third-party warranty issue-or should I say lack of a warranty. I ended up purchasing another brand and hope I didn't make a mistake. Thanks again for the time you put into your content and sharing your experiences with equipment. Thumbs up!
Hey that’s great and glad the video was a help! It’s bad that they won’t warranty the attachments if not purchased directly from them. Hope your new mower does a good job… Thanks
I’ve not heard anything good about those flail mower attachments. I personally use the Tree Slayer brush cutter from Rut Manufacturing in Denton, NC. I also have the Terminator brush cutter and the Annihilator disc mulcher for my CTL.
Yeah I’m with you on that! This one has definitely been a pain to use. I’ve been hearing about Rut Mfg. Sounds like they have some good equipment. Going to be doing a demo with the Mongo mower and their tilt bucket after the first of the year. Should be a good mower to check out…😀👍
In regards to the seals you keep blowing you might want to check and see if there is a check valve in the case drain line. When I was an aircraft maintenance guy way back in 1973 we had a aircraft that keep blowing seals out after about three of them they figured out that case drain line check valve was bad and pressure was building up.
😢😢😢😢We all need to contract that manufacturer. Imagine this happening to someone who has no outreach. Imagine how many its already happened to and they just wrote it off at a loss. This can’t be let go man.
Yeah that’s exactly right! If they handle things this way with someone they requested equipment reviews with then how have they handled other folks with problems? Very poor customer service for sure…🥵👍
Ever get tempted to declare a piece of equipment as being "possessed"? The last time I had to fix some equipment that was giving me a fit, I probably spent more time trying to locate some C-4 than working on the broken down thing-a-mabob. You do control your temper very well. I was wondering if Mike was having troubles with his mower and you answered that. At least you didn't accuse him of sabotaging yours (😊). It was a truly interesting episode of "As the Wrench Turns". Seriously, I enjoyed watching you overcome your frustration without pitching one of my style of fits. And, once again, you concluded with an appropriate message. Take care, my friend.
Better get yourself a FAE BL0/75. Get rid of that garbage. I’m so glad your posting all of this. I was just about to buy one but have since moved on to a FAE. A lot more money but production doesn’t get interrupted.
I’m with you on that! If you are planning to do a good bit of this work I would definitely go with a good mulcher. I had a Prinoth on a CAT 308 and sold it after I got the 313. I’m just going to stick with dirt work and let this stuff go…🤣🤣🤣
@@tristardiggin you bet, appreciate your vids, always good to see how others do this stuff...when I'm doing the kind of task you were in this vid, fence lines and gravel roadside, I find their disc mulcher doesn't wrap wire as bad bc it rotates horizontally. Swappable to a blade carrier that can mow bush hog class brush.
Wow. I'm with you on being done with that thing. My patients would've been long gone. Take that thing down to the river. Maybe it would make a good home for a fish. God bless.
On a drum type cutter you always change 2 teeth. The balance is opposite side and end of drum. That's why you're getting the vibration changing random teeth with different weighted teeth.
Man that's not what I wanna hear about the mower. We bought one we haven't used yet. I'm wondering though could the inline filter for the case drain be holding back pressure more than that seal can handle? We have our Kubota getting a case drain installed with a bobcat inline filter right now and now I'm rethinking that filter idea.
@@BackFarms I don’t think the inline filter would be a restriction because it didn’t restrict the gravity flow or the air pressure that I put on the reservoir tank. Also I took it apart prior to installing the last seal to make sure it wasn’t stopped up. Also, Mike installed the exact same case drain on his 304 a few days before we hooked up mine. Mike hasn’t had any issues with his other than broken teeth. That filter will save you excavator if for some reason that motor has a massive failure. I think the hydraulic motor on mine is a lemon.🍋 If you bought it from a third party dealer TMG won’t honor the warranty. Warranty is only good if bought directly from them. That’s what they told me in the email conversations with them. Hope you don’t have the problems that I have had…👍😀
I run a for hire mulching company. I am looking into mini-x mulchers and your video pops up. Was thinking a flail mower might be a better option? Sorry for your experience, but it’s helpful for your viewers. You have helped guide my decision to stick with drum mulchers and just keep pushing forward. Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s appreciated. Cheers from the Bulldog 🍻
Yup, that is a wise move! I bought this one just to use around my place to keep things trimmed up. Figured I would use it on a job here and there to pay for it. But that’s over with.😀🤣 Just not worth the aggravation. I had a Prinoth drum mulcher on a CAT 308 but sold it when I got the 313. The Prinoth was a beast and I had no issues with it. I’m going to pass on this kind of work and just stick with the dirt jobs…🤣🤣🤣
308 is a good size! I’m size constrained to 82” wide on my equipment trailer. Was thinking something bigger than a 304 and most likely something in the 6 ton range. I run a FECON and a Shearex on CTL’s. Not many mini-x have great horsepower in the 6 ton class to run drum mulchers. Hence my thinking about flail mowers. But cross those off the list 🤣. A mulcher on your 313 would straight up eat! It would also take a lot of jobs and wrapped up barb wire to pay for also 🤣😂. I subscribed to your channel for future updates 👍 Cheers 🍻
Hey I appreciate you subscribing! 👍😀 It would be cool to try out a mulcher on the 313. Like you said that thing would eat some trees. Actually I was pleased with the mower on how it cuts but the breakdowns are terrible. Thanks
I really wish stuff like this wouldnt happen... but it seems like you have pretty good self control! Im sure this expirience has and will help others... thanks for sharing the message... we all NEED to trust Jesus with EVERYTHING! thanks for sharing!👍🙏🏽
@tristardiggin I think there's an external vent on the backside of the tank I'm not positive of that if you have the parts book for it you may look in there to see
I think the big issue is the difference in the teeth, causing an imbalance on the rotor and vibration in the shafts that drive it, causing bearing and seal wear, maybe if you change out all the teeth for the same things this may improve the machine and stop it from blowing seals
Yeah I’m thinking the vibration would stop with all new teeth. My buddy Mike is running the same mower with mismatched teeth too but not having the seal issues with his. I think there is an internal issue causing the pressure to blow the seals. Will dig into the motor and see what I find… Thanks
@@tristardiggin I'm no engineer, but any vibration in the drive shaft will place wear at the seal, and with such fine tolerance's in these areas a leak is sure to be the result, problem solving is a process of one step at a time, elimination of the first issue may be the route to curing the whole issue. So step one, replace all the teeth, with matched identical items, step two, fix and repair the leak, and check for component wear at the seal face on the shafts, and hopefully this will get the machine running as it was designed to
@ Yeah Colin there is definitely some issues with it. But the first seal blew before the tooth was replaced and very few hours on it. With all the testing I’ve done so far I’m sure it’s an internal issue in the motor. More pressure than the case drain can handle, I suppose. Just a pain to start sinking good money in a new attachment…🥵 Thanks
Not sure on the music. I pay for a subscription to a website where I can download music for the videos. Generally it just has a short name for the tune. Down the river it needs to go…🤣👍
Great to see you sporting the 🇨🇦 hoodie I ran a flail mower 10ft on the back of Ford tractor if there was problem at all with things getting caught or the teeth was uneven it would shake it apart now I was cutting grass on sport fields parks etc over all they where a dependable unlike yours 👍👋🇨🇦
I would like you to try a LIPA mower from needham ag in kentucky. I'm looking for a tiny mower for my U17 kubota. lipa is the only one that has a mower that my machine can pull.
Couple things from experience with these. Get rid of the off brand cutter. Get a CAT head , not because its necessarily better, but the CAT parts support is second to none. Ensure your case train is at least 10mm inside diameter including fittings. Bigger is better on the case drain and make sure it dumps back in to the hydraulic tank with no filter. Also on all our cutters, the dealers require the hydraulic fluid to be at least 80 degrees before using. Tends to blow seals because of viscosity.

@@tristardiggin I`m not sure how they compare on price point, but the way I see it is if it`s not spinning its not paying for itself or putting food on your table LOL. I`d personally turn that paper weight into green paper fast ha!
Might be a long shot, but your case drain hose looks a little short and almost appears to be kinked at certain times. I noticed it around the 12:00 mark when you were running. If you are building pressure in that case drain because it's kinked that could easily explain the seal issue.
Was looking into that and checked on possible kink situations. And couldn’t find any pinch points. I’m beginning to think there is an obstruction inside the case drain port or something wrong with the motor not relieving pressure. Hope to get it figured out though. Thanks for the info…😀👍
You need to buy a mulcher then that won't happen way more heavy duty. Or get a drum mulcher on the skid steer if it's high flow and it really will eat.
Did I loan you my patience ? I hope not, you handled that real well. You will figure it out. I would call that company and work out a deal on a new motor. Thank you for that great message.
Seems you got a lemon with that flail mower. Hope things get worked out and you can at least use it for your personal use around the house. Good message 👍🏻
Yes, the wire sucks. I enjoy mulching, but I do dislike all the little hidden treasures you find. The problems you are having with the flail would frustrate me terribly. Have a wonderful day, friend. 🙂
I don't believe that little 304 is putting out too much pressure for that flail mower. I would say rather the mower is a piece of junk. Something is out of balance either in the shaft or the race where the bearings ride and keeps knocking out those seals. I feel for you and all the problems you are having with it, however I also am glad you are transparent about it because I plan on getting one this spring and I can assure you it won't be that brand lol. The warranty debacle is enough for me to say nope. I'm curious though did the dealer where you bought the mower represent it as having a warranty?
Yeah I think you are right about the pressure from the 304. I’m certain there is a problem in the hydraulic motor. Hope you can find a good quality mower from a good company. Right the warranty info was a bit disappointing. Mike arranged the purchase of the two mowers so not 100% sure about their representation of the warranty. Worth checking out though…

Thanks

@@PaulLB7 Another guy mentioned he has a mongo mower like this one. Said he liked it…

Check the return line and make sure it is completely clear. Could also be an issue with some piece of trash stuck in the fittings. Just an idea if it is possibly a flow or pressure issue that keeps blowing the seal
Yeah I hope to get it figured out one way or another…

Looks like a lemon on the motor Sam, would check if the shaft on the motor has excessive radial or end play on it before you pull the back cover off. Some have thrust shim washers that take the play out curious if your wasn't in spec when built and is putting side load on the seal pushing it out. Just something to ponder on before you pull apart again.
Nathan thanks for the info. I will check that out to see if there’s an issue with the shaft. I’m pretty sure it’s a lemon 🍋 too.

@@Sleekfalcon I totally get what you are saying. Things like that will drive a feller nuts.🤣🤣🤣
Hello Sam, All of us who do this type of work owe you a big thank you. In regards to the seals you keep blowing you might want to check and see if there is a check valve in the case drain line. When I was an aircraft maintenance guy way back in 1973 we had a aircraft that keep blowing seals out after about three of them they figured out that case drain line check valve was bad and pressure was building up.
Thanks John, appreciate the info. I did a test at the end of the video and there is free flow both ways through the case drain.
Thanks,
Sam

On a drum type cutter you always change 2 teeth. The balance is opposite side and end of drum. That's why you're getting the vibration changing random teeth with different weighted teeth.
@@barrygossman7253 Yeah it definitely needs new teeth to balance it…

Hitting that wire is going to put a helluva strain on your hydraulic motor in that mower head. I would say that’s causing your leaks and blown seals.
Possibly could have some to do with it but the first seal blew out on another job and didn’t hit anything at all….
Thanks
I think the hydraulic motor on mine is a lemon.🍋
If you bought it from a third party dealer TMG won’t honor the warranty.
I subscribed to your channel for future updates 👍
Cheers 🍻

Thanks
@tristardiggin I think there's an external vent on the backside of the tank I'm not positive of that if you have the parts book for it you may look in there to see
@dirt9925 The reservoir tank has a spring vented cap. So I’m thinking that’s where it dumps tank pressure from.

Nice video Sam. I was thinking it was the return line being too small.

U think that case drain line coming off the cutter is to small the line on the 304 is bigger I’m sure
@@Jeremy-de2of The one on the 304 is bigger for sure. The case drain coming out of the motor is a factory hose though.
@ I don’t no how the seal goes in but does it seem like it pushes in easy
@Jeremy-de2of Yeah it’s not too bad to change it.
Will dig into the motor and see what I find…
Thanks
Yes sir 👍 x's 2
@ 😀👍
Just a pain to start sinking good money in a new attachment…🥵

Couple things from experience with these. Get rid of the off brand cutter. Get a CAT head , not because its necessarily better, but the CAT parts support is second to none. Ensure your case train is at least 10mm inside diameter including fittings. Bigger is better on the case drain and make sure it dumps back in to the hydraulic tank with no filter. Also on all our cutters, the dealers require the hydraulic fluid to be at least 80 degrees before using. Tends to blow seals because of viscosity.
CAT definitely has excellent product support. They have always jumped right on any issues that I have had.
Thanks for the info…

The motor has to have a pressure release valve that opens at a certain pressure
I say it not working so it blows the seal out
Yeah that’s a good possibility. 👍
