I dunno if I would say the siren pursued romantically because she couldn’t get him. I believe she pursued him because he wasn’t affected by her scream. She didn’t know he was deaf. So she misinterpreted his unaffected state as being pure of heart

This is exactly how i took it, which is why she let her guard down which left her vulnerable to be taken advantage of. It also explains her expression at the end of utter loss and betrayal.

I was under the impression that all her gold and jewelry was her actual body! Because her very lips were sequins, she severely bled from when he ripped a gold scale off her, and then she was a horrific bloody corpse from him stripping off her jewelry. When she was revived, her skin was tattered like it had been picked to shreds.
I highly doubt she gathered all that from the knights.

It is definitely the intention, she bled every time he rips something out. So she didn't steal the gold, it's her scale/skin. Clearly many people wanted it for themselves.

There is one more you missed , the pond is in the shape of a heart. The video is about listening to your heart will get you killed. The reason Jibaro didnt get killed initially was because he wasnt listening.
No he was deaf. When he drank the blood water he could hear, as it had healing qualities hence the Siren being able to come back to life.
@@Kaesar24 it’s very clear this commenter was equating listening to hearing. Deaf people cannot hear. So yeah, the guy didn’t listen to his “heart” because he couldn’t, because deaf people can’t hear, and hearing is also sometimes referred to as listening!

Jibaro taking the Golden Woman’s golf was a heart wrenching scene that evoked SA and rape. She took a moment to trust him and he violated her, violating her body and dumping her into the river. Yeah, she had the corpses of others in the lake, but that doesn’t make the scene any less horrifying
She had the corpses of the men that tried to do the same to her as the deaf guy
Yeah i picked up on that too. I don't agree with the creator and failed to pick up on the themes he was trying to invoke. I personally interpreted as a cautionary tale of men's greed and entitlement and how deadly it can end on both sides.

This is similar to how I was impacted. I felt like she spared him when she could’ve always killed him from the v beginning & he violated her. Her cries were so agonizing when she realized he’d stolen from her. It was heart wrenching. Seeing him get what he deserved was so ultimately satisfying.
She had no idea he was deaf, so to her, her powers weren't working because he was different to the other men. He didn't want her just for her body, because if that were his intentions, her voice would've claimed him, so for her, that means he's so different that he's a safe being to be around. She's never experienced deafness, but given there's the signs on the trees, she's likely come across local people who aren't interested in her gold (because they know better) before that have respected her lake, and moved on in peace. But this guy is not only not affected ( suggesting he's not a threat), but he's actually stayed instead of moving on, so for her, that must mean he wants something else with her that goes with his peacful intentions. So she let's her guard down, and ends up brutalised. No part of her is left unaffected. He was just like the others and wanted her body, but her safety test failed, and she was violated in her own home, waking up in her own bed (that bit of the lake was where she woke up from, so I'm going with that being where she sleeps), only to see what he did to her body.
IMO the siren is a very primal character; she is acting innocently in a rather childlike way. But we know that innocence and cruelty can often be two sides of the same coin. Children can be little psychopaths precisely for the reason of them not knowing better and because they're not burdened by the social mores that they learn later.... and the siren acts on her whims much the same way.

@@uhhlexsiss77 First of all, it may seem he didn't initially know where the gold was from but let me ask you this, why were the troops there to begin with? Why dismount on grounds belonging to a mystical being if you weren't there to take something from there in the first place? Even if he may not have known where the gold was from at first, it didn't stop him from attacking her when he finally did.
Second, if you look at it closely, what he picked up was not a golden coin, it was actually a golden scale (like a fish) that was from her body as we can see she's completely covered in. He had to pluck them off of her body n even drew some of her blood, so those jewelries were literally part of her like any other aquatic creature so no, she didn't steal them from other people. The gold was her property by right n nature so not only did he steal from her, he straight up mutilated her.
I loved this episode, but I can’t help but notice a powerful imperialism concept in it; for example, the nights are dressed like Spanish conquistadors in the siren, showing a degree of innocence attributed to a native population before being stripped of their land and wealth. Even those of us who played civilization in the past know that the robe the so-called priest was wearing looked more like an inquisitor's uniform in the Spanish inquisition.

In the end, all my sympathy was with the Golden Woman as she expressed the pain of her violation. It was heartbreaking and sorrowful to watch. I wanted her revenge for her and was happy when she got it. Pretty amazing acting for some animation.
But she killed hundreds of people...
@@finn54123 It was her nature, not a moral choice. You don't blame an alligator for being a carnivore. Look at the people she killed: violent men who came to plunder her lands for its riches without care for the damage they inflicted. She didn't go to their lands to kill them, they came to hers.
@@bijou3000 We can only confirm the living men in the video came to plunder her riches, or actually we don't, wouldn't be the first time Spaniards were looking for magical water (fountain of youth, anyone?)
. We don't know the first thing about the circumstances of the skeletons in her lake.
They could have been travelers, wealthy merchants, kings and knights lured by legends of a magical woman that grants wishes in a lake. We dont know.
One thing is for sure though, she struck first, and she pulled them in to drown without a second thought. I have no empathy for either of them.

7. She's still alive because the waters mingled with HER blood. This mixture gave him the hearing which enabled her to pull his butt down the way nature obviously intended

10. He's dead and I'm glad he's dead. She will continue to be an elemental creature and she can build back her wardrobe out of the riches she's stripped from the corpses. He is fish food and he deserves exactly what happened to him.
@@Gemmlarsen Some good food for thought! I would counter the argument that she struck first though, in that the knight stole a piece of treasure from the lake and that is what induced her to defend her lake.
That being said, I don’t really view either the knights or the siren as the hero or villain in the story. The siren is meant to lure prey. I would like to think mankind isn’t meant to strip a place/creature of all its value and leave it for dead.. but that does seem to be our tendency as a species. :/ Maybe both acted on their beastly natures?
I spent the entire short wondering if this truly was animated. it is incredible just how far we have come with computer generated movies. after it was over I just sat awestruck at how incredible the experience was. bravo L D & R

I was trying to figure out if it was CGI or not bc something felt off about the way those guys looked.
I've never seen CGI this detailed. not even in movies like Avatar which was the pinnacle and pioneer of motion capture technology at the time of it's release.
even video games of the highest caliber like call of duty, resident evil don't hold a candle to the stuff in Love death and robots. it's insane.
Me too. I had to see some of the source 3D video to be convinced it wasn't actually live with some CGI to exaggerate features.

Slight misdirection in the first few minutes is the illusion that the US only has werewolves
I absolutely love the sound design of the episode. The siren's screams are very terrifying due to the high-end pitch and way it breaks off at the end scene because of her pain. Also, when the knight regains his hearing and listens to the birds and water, his confusion and fear is really realistic .
I find it interesting that the tiny female carries all the gold and jewels, dancing and floating on the water but when the soldier pulls it all off her, he has trouble carrying it all in his cape...
Not surprising at all since she was also able to SWIM UP the waterfall and effortlessly stand and even dance through the river when the knight could barely get a couple steps in

The siren represented GREED and the fact that the qr code leads you to the NFT of the siren is probably well thought out 😂😂😂

This episode left me staring at the screen not paying attention to the next episode, all in my head and wishing Jibaro was a whole movie...I think I'm going to rewatch just because of how beautiful and symbolic it was.

Where did you watch it?
My interpretation is that this was heavily inspired by the Spanish conquistadors in Central/South America and their obsessive search for the city of gold and El Dorado - this was a legendary native king who was plated in gold. There are a bunch of parallels between this animation and the history of the conquistadors, including the location, and the costumes worn by the soldiers and the gold plating on the woman. Also the fact that the jungle was deadly to many conquistadors, but ultimately the Spanish did way more damage destroying and pillaging the environment and the native people because they were obsessed with the gold and other resources they found - terribly bloody and tragic story.
For anyone interested: There's a fascinating history about conquistadors basically going gold crazy and disappearing on mad quests in the jungles in search of fabulous treasure. Francisco Orellana led a huge army on a fool's journey through the jungle to track new sources of wealth. They were wearing armor (very similar to the animation) and ridiculously overdressed and underprepared, and most of them got lost and died except for a few who completed a heroic trek of hundreds of miles to the coast.

That's American propaganda speaking. Yes, the gold fever was real and Spaniards were greedy, no doubt about that. Reality is that the Spanish empire often allied itself with locals to overcome big native empires like the Aztecs. The result is that, besides the real undermining of the native population, there still is a majority of indigenous descendants among south America. Now, fellow Americans: how many indigenous descendants are still going in your "cruelty-free" nation?

Jibaro is easily one of my favorite episodes of this volume. I still can't believe this is all CGI.

@@zitronentee No mocap was used for this ... I believe it is pure keyframe animation, using video reference (I think The Witness from S1 was done this way as well), which makes it even more impressive! Netflix has a short video on this episode on their TH-cam page.

This was art. I loved every bit. It kind of reminded me of when the prince took Maleficent’s wings in her sleep, however this storyline was way darker. I love the effects. I love the creativity put into this.
At the end, I felt the siren was conflicted. She wanted revenge, but at the same time she didn’t want to hurt him because she cared for him, even her crying/dancing looked different.
Eh, I wouldn't say she cared for him. I'd say she was intrigued/obsessed because her power didn't work on him.
I don't think the tattoo on his neck is an M-shape. It's a flower - more specifically - a narcissus. Very fitting.
Jíbaro is a word used in Puerto Rico to refer to the countryside people who farm the land in a traditional way. The jíbaro is a self-subsistence farmer, and an iconic reflection of the Puerto Rican people.

I’m also reminded of the way the Taínos discovered the Spanish could be killed after their initial deception: they drowned a Spanish soldier in the river, paving the way for Agüeybana to lead a revolt against the Spanish.
This episode was a perfect metaphor for toxic relationships. They were attracted to each other for the wrong reasons: greed and lust. In the end, they both end up losing. He dies because of his greed for jewelry; she's no longer able to dance because she lusts for him. The best episode by far.
I definitely wouldn't say lust or at least not in the traditional sense. I don't know about you but I don't typically cuddle with those I'm lusting for. I think she made a misjudgment thinking he was pure of heart because he wasn't swayed by her song like the other men. Not knowing he was just deaf.
It didn’t seem like she lust after him. It seems like she wanted to know more of why he wasn’t dying and she was naive to this and trusted him but in the end got hurt at the inevitable truth; he was just as greedy as all the other men and more so much worse because he started to get closer to her and make her think there was something there but there wasn’t and never was and violated her accordingly.

I just realized the river is the shape of a heart. Not a cartoonish heart but the shape of a realistic heart, one without a pointy end.
It’s actually a uterus. It’s a metaphor for how this woman is naturally herself and attractive. Her scales and good are symbolic of her being good looking. The knights see her and immediately charge her with leers and jeers. She’s clearly been through this before (hence the lake floor COVERD in bodies in various states of decay. She immediately strikes first. But jibaro is deaf and doesn’t hear her spell. He’s too distracted by the chaos, he leaves and she’s shocked.
This intrigues her and she ends up falling for him. (He’s not like other guys uwu) she does her creepy love struck thing but he has one thing in mind.
Once he sees how pretty she is, he chases her to the river where she thinks she’s about to have a romance but instead he knocks her out and then strips her flesh of its scales and gold (a metaphor for rape)
He dumps her body in the river and carries on his way.
The bloody water is her injuries from the attack.
When she revives, her body is decimated and she is hunched over and she is horrified.
Because jibaro drank some of her blood by mistake, his hearing is repaired.
When she screams in agony, it catches him now and she ends up killing him out of rage. But even then she is still stripped and suffering.
It is a sadly time old tale of women wanting love and men wanting pleasure and then them taking it by force or lies. 😔

She attacked first out of possible malevolence she then only was intrigued by him after he survived her destructive attack. That is not love it's her own greed and infatuation with getting the man she couldn't have even her kiss was destructive and predatory he then revealed his own greed and ruthlessness and stripped her in the end she got him back for stripping her beautiful gold and adding yet another corpse to her collection. This is a story of 2 predators fighting under a thinly veiled facade of romantic love which even the director has said. You projected an overly gynocentric perspective onto the story.
@@InsaneLaughter01 I don't necessarily think the stripping of her gold metaphorically means rape I think it generally shows humanity as a whole taking advantage of each other for greed even if it means not listening to their heart. I think the guy was into her seen by how he danced with her and actually kissed her before attacking her. That probably represents him being in love but steadily not listening to it because he can't resist his own greed, I don't think this is supposed to be one of those type of messages where it's like "oh look the man is doing something to the woman poor woman this man is bad" it represents humanity as a whole and what we do to each other, it's either that or representation of a toxic relationship with deep dark intentions behind them (the woman having a bad motivation for liking a man just because she couldn't take advantage of him and the man having bad Motivation for having greed in the relationship) this is my personal take on the episode however I might need to watch it a few more times since it's very obviously a symbolic deep analogy of some real world problem. It might even be what you said in the first place but I'm just trying to open your mind to the possibilities of other problems it might be representing.

I see them both as unwitting puppets that just play out their parts in a beautiful and tragic story. Everything is paradoxical, they are both covered in metal, he is silver and she is gold, he wants her riches and she wants to have power over him...they are both designed to want those things and they play it out. She probably sees him as equal because she cannot destroy him, and therefore desires him. Beautiful how even her kisses are dangerous for him. He seems never to be emotionally vulnerable towards her beauty, only to her wealth, which he wants for himself and gets in a very cold and calculated manner. When it comes to a representation of toxicity it rings true, the shreiking sounds like anguish and at the end of the video it would seem appropriate that she shreiks in anguish and I wonder if her beauty and her riches have led her to many past suitors who left her in such a state. Who wouldn't scream out if you loved someone and all they wanted is to literally strip the scales off your skin?

Jibaro is a Puerto Rican phrase meaning a small farmer, rural worker, or laborer.
Based on an article I read, Jibaro was a symbolism of the Spanish conquest that ended murdering and oppressing the Taino people of Puerto Rico in the 14th century. The Spanish conquistadors, led by Christopher Columbus were basically colonizing the natives, and enslaving them to mine for golds. But little did they know, the gold resources weren't enough to bring significant wealth to their empire. So, Columbus would murder many of these Taino people and brought some of them onto his ship as slaves. The bloodshed in this animation could perhaps be the symbolism of violence between the natives of Puerto Rico and the Spaniards in the early 14th century.
But in summary, you could either view this as a story of its own or the symbolism that I mentioned above.
One of the best animated shorts of all time. Can you imagine if this played before a Pixar movie? People would never stop talking about it.

Definitely in the animation category but DO NOT put it on Pixar, that would absolutely traumatize kids.
I understood this episode as the golden woman representing mother earth and the soldiers as the greed in people. jibari represented the people who refuse to respect the beauty of nature and instead try to steal from it and take advantage of it. once jibari was finally able to hear actual sounds of nature, it was painful for him. but once he got used to the sounds, and got everything he ever wanted (treasure and the ability to hear) he was immediately murdered for stripping the golden woman of all her pride and beauty.
it makes me mad that people feel bad for the deaf dude when clearly the siren was the victim

For réal. She’s minding her business in her lake when some mf men start messing with her shit. Ones some how not affected by her defense tactic and I have to assume she thought that meant he was good different. And then gets violated, gutted and ditched.
If you have ever been in the middle of the ocean and heard and actual siren song, it is the craziest thing you will ever hear. It sounds like its coming from all over in every direction and its the loudest thing out there way louder than the ocean waves crashing against the boat, louder than the engine of the boat. It drives you mad because the sound is so majestic you naturally go looking for it. Its like an unexplainable urge to go seek out the source of the sound.
As i was there when siren screamed, i can confirm this whatever you said is absolutely right.

For me the episode symbolizes the destructive seduction & greed cycle. This can indeed be nested inside a toxic relationship but extend beyond that. In the end you lose yourself and everything around you. This pure loss is so perfectly portrayed. Im flabbergasted.
I loved jibaro, despite the strangeness that this episode can bring I was very impressed and consider it a unique experience to watch. honestly in relation to relationships I felt more directed towards environmental issues than the relationship issues themselves. perhaps because both nature and man are predators. The scene where she wakes up from the river was a scene very reminiscent of abuse and just chilling. when the river turns to blood it reminds me of a time when a dam broke and all the ores went into the river killing the fish and destroying everything in its path... it was very touching for me to see this scene and I immediately remember what happened . Even because the accident only happened because of the greed of the men who wanted the riches of that place. the video was great.
This was a good explanation from the perspective of how screwed up human interactions can be. But since many works of art are multi-layered, it would have been good to talk about the meaning implied by the Siren's unity with the river.
personally i think she pursued the guy because he was the only one who could withstand her callings. he's deaf. he's immune to sounds of her screaming because he can't hear at all and maybe that's why she thought that he would be the one for her. but he betrayed her trust, knowing damn well why she went soft at the slightest affection and tolerance. he hurt her so bad and threw her corpse away with no second thoughts whatsoever.
sure, she massacred all those knights and it also doesn't look like it's her first roundabout with all those corpses in her lake either. but honestly if a bunch of guys wanted to skin me alive because they like the way i looked then i would've committed mass murder too.

I actually love the inclusion of the NFT since its a picture of the golden women. I find it very in theme with the some of messages of greed within the story.

I think that the fact that he healed from being deaf symbolizes the moment in which he became greedy.
I know that in the beginning he took a piece of gold ( I guess ) but he wasn’t greedy, maybe he wasn’t paid enough so even e very little thing could make the difference. Then he proceeded to take from her ALL of her richness and then he became greedy cause it wasn’t necessary to have all of that
In his defense, she killed all of his mates.

The Lake Saiful Muluk is named after a legendary prince. A fairy tale called Saif-ul-Muluk, written by the Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, talks of the lake. It tells the story of the Egyptian Prince Saiful Malook who fell in love with a fairy princess named Princess Badri-ul-Jamala at the lake.

I took this as the golden woman actually was not evil , perhaps she haunts people who are greedy for gold in the pond. Jibaro was finally proved as one of them and destined to be killed by goddess of the pond.

The soldiers are Spanish Conquistadors. You know, the guys that destroyed the Mayan civilization.
I feel its impossible to see the Siren through the moral optics of a man. She is clearly some sort of diety, which is ultimatelly impossible to comprehend. So, for me, it is easier to "judge" the soldier as a greedy bastard. I dont feel I can do any kind of judging with the Siren, though I am very sorry she got beaten up so badly and sence her sorrow. Like with nature itself though, its impossible for me to see her not being moral.

This reminded me of the Conquistadors in South America. They heard about a city of gold, which many think was the ritual actually if a leader who’d cover themselves in gold and then go into a lake. It also reminded of one of the few battles the Inca did win against them when they flooded their valley on purpose and pushed their massive boulders from the quarries down from up high… they retreated that one, but um overall the Spanish Inquisition came to Latin America and many went into hiding and their was like a manual human gold train coming out from South America and out through Cartagena, Colombia and would be sent back to Spain and until more was dug up by the natives working in mines and so on. They never found that lost city, but kept looking and despite the Andes the Spanish were swift in conquering and oppressing these people.

I'd recommend you giving it a second viewing, a lot of people are getting hung up on the conquistador aesthetic, and not paying attention to the events.
Maybe watch it twice more, each time trying to sympathise with each side.
It would be terrifying to be in his position, and ounce she's dead, the looting makes sense, him having nothing else, loosing everything in her attack.

The armor was common all around Europe during the Renaissance. Most of them were actually wearing german style armor.

I think the underlying story is about colonization. The golden woman is inspired by many historically colonized cultures, and the knights and 'priests' represent the European crusades in foreign lands. @ThinkStory did a pretty good video explaining it.

This was an awesome episode and I think it really deserved a better flush through.This could have easily been a series all to itself.
The woman being covered in jewels doesn't necessarily imply she stole it from anyone. It was already hers and a part of her, which is why she started bleeding as they were ripped from her body.
My interpretation is that the siren was not necessarily “innocent” but a deity who was defending her land. We can only speculate on why all those other bodies were there, but I think it was just the other soldiers who came for her.i believe she attacked them because the man took one of her “scales” or what ever you would call the gold bits and jewels on her body, and she saw it as a violation of herself (since those scales are literally connected to her flesh) and retaliated, I’m not saying that the murder of all the soldiers was necessarily justified, but they came onto her land, with weapons to do who knows what with, and then they took a piece of her, I think that could pass as “ motive”. When she saw the man not react and leave, I think she mistook it as him being good or “different” from the rest, which is why she pursued him. I mean, imagine being a deity who’s been alive for who knows how long, and sees someone react to her voice in a way she has never witnessed before.( which is rlly sad) so she thinks he’s pure and falls in love, or at the very least in lust with the man, explaining the scene where she lays with him. When he strips her of her literal SKIN (which could have been interpreted as SA/Rape, or the greed of man to nature or women) you see his true colors ( not that he was necessarily hiding his true self through the episode). After throwing her into the waterfall, he attempts to leave with the gold, but struggles ( a full grown soldier mind you) which may represent how taking something that doesn’t belong to you, wasn’t made FOR YOU can have consequences.We then see the siren surrounded by blood, drift through the water, to when it they cuts to a view of a tidal wave of blood, which taints the water. The siren then drifts to the middle of the original lake we first saw her in, and she fall beneath the surface.the man, exhausted from his travels, drinks the water, not noticing the change between the regular water and the blood. He regains his hearing, leaving him disoriented and afraid.the siren, now noticing her mangled state, cries in pain and agony, her anger growing for the man who did this to her. She seemingly attempts to dance like before in one scene but is unable to, and this saddened he to a point of despair. She now uses her voice ( which now cracks more and you can hear the pain in it) to lure that man. Him, now being able to hear, falls into the water and drowns. With the last scene showing the siren, sitting in the water, alone, with a cold, lifeless, and distant look on her face.
I was def of the sirens side for this, though both sides committed wrongs. ❤
Jibaro is no doubt one of the best thing in 2022 so far and so different. it strikes us differently and gawd we wish sth like this can be seen more often. LD+R is so unique and m not afraid to express my feeling and gratitude in the time where big name cant make a decent movies anymore. just hope his work will make it to next blockbuster.
The director of this episode said it was about toxic relationships.
The gold that he found was one of her gold scales. She had golden scales all over her body. When he ripped off the gold, she was left bleeding so the gold was part of her.
You mentioned that the story is inspired by regions of Russia and neighboring areas. As someone who was born and lives in Slovakia (Eastern Europe) our culture and our stories about sirens often include "water of life" or "living water" which is quite often connected to death or blood in one way or another. So that could be why the soldier got his hearing
I'm not a fan of finding another idea when the one it's been explained by the creators,but... I see in the movie human vs nature relationship. People who belive their God (the knights take the oath to priests) ready to seize another gods' (the gold woman as Nature) riches. And as Nature can kill those who dare to destroy, it can heal. One of the meanings of 'jibaro' is 'wild, not domesticated', so I assume we may compare it with the power of the nature which is unable to be predicted or controlled. Eventually, the last deaf soldier cannot resist his curiosity and greediness even in the face of death.
This episode was weird as heck, but insanely intriguing.

I don’t really think the Golden Woman just lured the knights and wealthy people into the lake because she wanted to, she most likely did the same thing she did with the past knights she’d had to kill because all they wanted was to kill her and take her jewelry just like Jibaro..I think she got all her jewels from the past wealthy people who tried to kill her. She took the jewels they wore and now she’s wears them as a sign or taking their jewels is a way over revenge for her because I’m sure when she killed Jibaro she dove down and took the jewels from all those funky knights and pricked gold into her skin all over again./ NOT A THEORY JUST MY THOUGHTS.
She’s not wearing jewelry: jewelry is a part of her, that bleeds when removed.
Whatever she truly is, that gold in that lake is not for Conquistadors, and is a component of her.
She seems to be a Native American lady, so she already has gold.

this is completely based on Puerto Rican history. Jibaro is a term that we use for people from the mountains. When the conquistador showed up the Tanios thought the Spaniards were gods but eventually some wanted to test them, so they drowned a Spaniard in the river to see if they were gods. We were thought this in school in Puerto Rico.
Her costume and the dancing and sound are so so beautiful . New Halloween costume . Honestly speaking I didn’t know it is animated when I was watching the trailer . So so realistic . I was thinking “wao this woman went through serious make up, esp the eye and skin.”
I believe what Shay said about pure of heart. My interpretation was maybe he robbed her of her self worth by taking something that made her who she was. I watched it a few times and found the dancing to be amazing and I could not stop watching this one, the visual affects were brill ❤
See the heart-shaped lake? That’s a heart of a woman and she needed to protect it from men who had other intentions than love. I interpret her killing men as pushing men away until Jibaro came, a man that seemed different, immune to her nags, to her power, so she thought he was worthy and had a little infatuation for him. But then it was proved that he may be immune to her voice, but not to her “value.” He stripped her off her worth. His greed proved him to be just like all the other men, and the woman was left devastated and without dignity.
Imagine being surrounded by men who were intending on hurting you, in the beginning, and when you’re defensive by using your voice, you’re somehow (still) not the victim… Siren was and still is the victim

5. Jibaro was never in the right. The only reason he didn’t attack the first time was out of confusion and fear. The second time, he ‘robbed’ her (metaphor for rape, thus the vagina shaped lake and the water turning to blood and her horrific state after she revived.)

2. He was deaf, literally the only reason he survived. You can see later in the episode that he got his hearing back by some curse and was absolutely terrified from sensory overload.
3. The siren actually sent them into a flurry which either caused them to drown or kill each other, they didn't go after her before she started screaming.
4. The bottom of the lake is full of people she killed with her "song", also she tried to force herself onto Jibaro and he tried to push her away cause she was actually hurting him.
5. He only took from her after he thought she was dead, in which was retribution for his unit. The lake scene where he picked up the little spec of gold depicts him just picking it like you would if there was a five dollar bill on the sidewalk as he didn't know his whole unit would die because of barely an ounce of gold.

He indicated they were both into the relationship, and the reason he bled from the kiss was because of her ruby lips.

Whats also interesting is that the deaf knight was initially so distracted by the gold that he didnt go to kneel Infront of the priests, its just because he was deaf, he was too busy searching for more gold in the water.

It’s interesting cause I thought that the whole reason why the siren was leading those men and the nobles into the river was to stop them from damaging her territory or the forest, kind of like those people on that island that kill anyone that try to come over to it, if that makes sense.
Maybe im being the devils advocate here, but I still felt bad for both characters. I don't find any of them in the wrong here. The siren (Aka the Golden women) fell in love too fast, simply because he was immune. She's all alone in that forest, and all she does is kill, maybe she eats them? But it seems the bodies are left to rott. It makes sense that she would be happy to find a human who has no interest in her voice. The issue with her is that shes so blind by love and her own happiness she doesnt notice how painful her love is towards him, on top of that She's naive, but at the same time, that's not her fault, shes not been taught, and obviously that killing behavior is in her nature to survive. And I still feel bad for the deaf man, despite the fact that he took advantage of the siren, people forget in his eyes SHES STILL A MONSTER THAT KILLED HIS TEAM. It's a wonder how that man ended up as a soldier as I bet it would have been extremly hard times during that Era for a deaf man, now imagine that man with gold to bring back, it will be a whole lot easier for him if he were rich, so I absolutely understand his obsesssion with gold. In his mind that was going to fix so much. Unfortunately it was greed that allowed him to find gold, and it was also greed that took it away. Very gorgeous story, and the explanation was amazing.

if you read this through the obviously tinted conquistador lenze and put the siren as a representation of conquered people, this tale has an obviously one sided victim and one monster. his obsession with gold isnt "because he had it rough" conquistadors were openly trying to get rich off the backs of enslaved and killed indigenous people. and guess What. he killed her and took her gold. very parallel to real life events. no body should feel sympathy for him or his knights.

the amount of people rooting for the deaf knight is INCREDEBLY DISTURBING. either symbolism flew over your hear entirely or you enjoy that kind of depiction of brutalization because the symbolism wasn't subtle; it was pretty on the nose.

They're conquistadors. Their role historically was to rape, genocide, and steal from native populations which the syren clearly represents. the knights were there because, just like in real life, they were attracted to the promise of gold and riches which the syren was wearing. in real life, they went to lakes and rivers full of gold, murdered everyone in sight, and took it. considering there were bodies in the water much older than when this scene started, it shows the siren has been hunted down before so she knows that the conquistadors are there for.
invading someone elses home and getting killed for it doesnt make that killer a bad guy. makes them a hero.
2. the deaf man isnt a hero
he was a conquistador and he only chased after her to grab her gold. when he killed her be was literally covering a vaginal shaped lake in blood. obviously this meant that he 'raped' her, stripped her, and stole from her. the gold was a part of her body much like how native latin Americans gold was a part of their existence and culture.
he isnt a hero, he wasnt there for revenge for his homeys (he gave 0 fucks about them. he hid the gold in the beginning from them), he was just a greedy ass hole like the rest of the conquistadors.
frankly, im glad they revived the siren in the end because the parallel to real life was a bit too gratuitous and depressing to watch. reviving her and letting her kill him despite being in deep pain is pretty cathardic as someone who is both latin American AND from the culture the word jibaro is about.

The siren as symbolism for native population doesn't make any sense as she has significant power over the knights. Which the natives didn't have over the conquistadors.
In the end the symbolism of it being about toxic relationships makes significantly more sense. And the director came out and said that's what he intended. Works so much better and is much more nuanced than the basic symbolism of natives and conquistadors.

"A siren's love", is actually a filipino folklore. My grandmother told me, a "mutya"(we call sirens, water "gems" or water fairies) would only love once in his/her life. And every time, mankind proves to them that they are greedy, and only care for material things, lust and power. So mutyas always put curse upon them to lose their minds and turn into impudent animals they are. Later on, taking their own lives. Because the mutyas curse has a hidden effect on the afflicted; after efforts of a shaman, or priest or sorcerer to try to lift the curse, the afflicted will succumb into despair. As sirens only show their beautiful face once to their beloved human. They are adorned with jewels and precious gems, thats why we call em "mutya"s and wears a golden or silver mask. Gold means they are very very old. Silver means they are new borns as sirens here in the Philippines where believed to be children of the moon goddesses Bulan and Linawan. The mothers they couldnt even embrace. So sirens really sought true love.
-Sadly, sirens only can bear children only with a human lover, a curse put to them by the old gods who witnessed the forbidden love of their mother goddesses with a human.

But when i gaze at it, it has the same flowing tail, and i hold tight to what seems like its muscular arm and i admire it strength since i was a chubby kid back then it held me firm and close to his hairy chest. I can feel its breathing gills which looks like series of crab mouths in the abdominal area. When were close to the surface and the sandshore, i was nearly fainting, i remember seeing his pretty face...my vision is blurring that moment but i somehow recognized that face. That smirk...i remembered, laughing in my own mind, that its delusional to wish for zach efron's kiss. The creature said "your wish is granted". Then it kissed me and as i was gazing to it eyes, i was in awe coz his eyes and nose were like zach efron's. Then everything turned black -i woke up in a sound of a slap. My face stinged a bit, And saw all my friends surrounded me i told them, "am i dead?" they all sighed in relief. That is when i noticed Buddy the hunky quarterback, who was standing behind them smirked to me, and whispered "youre welcome." then i jumped out of shock and immediately went home. It was him! I dont know, but he insisted to come with me while i was still in shock so i dont know what to say or do. He carried me on his back. "youre...strong-.." i think i said it loud, "yes i am" he replied. When my mom opened the door, she knew already what happened. The boy carrying me wasnt a human. I took a whole week to get better, and during those days, i pretend to be asleep as Buddy do not tire to visit me everyday, checking if i am okay. Until i asked my mom what really is happening, she told me, "Buddy's father, the bus company owner here in our area, was the siren who blessed you and your sisters with protection so no one can harm you three. and that the siren reached for mom's help to be able to look human, but cure me of my skin cancer in exchange. The reason why Buddy had this shell necklace all along. Buddy and i were now boyfriends and he always takes care of me. He is a great cook. But a terrible singer, in contrast to western beliefs that sirens had beautiful singing voice. And if you guys believed that sirens lure and enchant humans, well i honestly admit that im deeply in love of this hunk. As he is to me. If lgbtq+ marriage here in the Philippines will be legal, i would marry him and choose to grow old with him (well hmm just a few gray hairs are acceptable 😅)
