    Thanks for breaking this down. A few other things to consider:
    1. Many credit cards, especially travel-oriented ones, provide trip insurance. Mine covers trip cancellation/interruption (for specified reasons) as well as a nominal amount for medical, if you charged any part of the cost of the trip on that card. Benefits vary, of course, so check the card terms.
    2. Check with the health insurance you already have to see if, and to what degree, it will cover you abroad. Mine provides the same coverage abroad that it does at home, but I'd probably need to pay up front and get reimbursed.
    3. Consider medical evacuation. Even if your health insurance covers this, it's likely (1) only if medically necessary, and (2) only to the nearest suitable hospital. Some travel insurance will cover evacuation to a hospital of your choice, which would be much nicer. Expect to pay more for this benefit.

    Still keeping you in prayers for your health, Don. Thank you for this video.
    Even though I love NCL, I had a terrible time with the insurance I bought through them. I had to cancel a trip 2 days before departure due to a family emergency. Never be fooled by the phrase “for any reason”.

    Always get it. It's sort of expensive, but with my luck I'll never need it, but if I don't buy it, for sure I'll need it. I buy the Platinum plan through Princess.

    Great, great tip on including travel days in the days of the trip! The real main drivers in cost is age and cost of the trip, not days. I used to never buy insurance picking to self insure. However, I now think the single most important reason to buy insurance is in case the very worst happened overseas on a trip. A friend needed a medical evacuation from Aruba a couple years ago, about 30k. So I take the rest along with it, not much more.

    • @Donsfamilyvacations
      @Donsfamilyvacations  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I travel so much I buy my travel insurance for the whole year and save a bit that way

    • @boatlover1875
      @boatlover1875 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How much does that cost? We usually cruise 4-5 times a year and have a couple weeks in Aruba. Would that be cost effective for us? Do you set a set limit per trip/week?

    • @Donsfamilyvacations
      @Donsfamilyvacations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are limits of how many days in a row you can be gone and total months but I think it's like 60 days in a row and 6 months of the year. If I'm traveling more than 3 weeks it's cheaper to look into the year insurance. every insurance company offers something like that

    Good video, Don. I took care of a patient once who had NO travel ins on her cruise and she had to get air lifted off the ship to an ICU on an island hospital. Once she was stable she was flown to the US and to our hospital. She said she would NEVER go without ins again!! (well duh!!) :-).....BTW, excellent advice about adding the extra ins coverage for the beginning and the end of your trip!

    I always get travel insurance but only recently as I get older. Since if you get sick or hurt overseas it can be costly and usually they want money before treatment. Had a friend who got shot ( accidently they werent shooting at him) he would have had to pay for air evacuation ( about $42000) instead it was covered.

  • @cassandrab4080
    @cassandrab4080 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Be sure to read the small print on the policy! I think the most common risks you'd want covered would be (1) Missing the cruise because of airline delays, re-routing, lost suitcases, etc. and (2) major illness just before departure time (eg, appendicitis 2 days before the cruise sails.)
    3 years ago Celebrity offered me generic insurance that cost 10% of the cruise price. It covered only the time between embarkation and disembarkation. That meant no coverage for cancellation due to flight delays, etc. And no coverage for cancellation due to major illnesses prior to the cruise.
    Usually cruise company insurance covers flights that THEY book as part of the cruise package. Cruise company air travel presents its own constellation of risks and frustrations.
    Be careful about exclusions for "pre-existing illnesses". I know of instances in which, for example, the insurance refused to cover a broken leg after a fall, because the individual was taking a medication that "may cause dizziness", so the broken leg was surely a complication of her pre-existing illness.

    When me and my husband went on our cruise years ago we didn't have it. He cut his finger and when we got back to the ship they wanted over $20 for a bandaid. They told him he had to buy the whole box and he argued with them. Finally they gave him a bandaid for free. They're stingy on cruise ships. I don't know if insurance would cover a bandaid but next time we go I'm gonna just bring my own first aid kit.

    Hmmmm, I dunno ... these travel insurance thingy ... I am wondering whether I now have logged into this fear of "just in case something bad happens". The thought of buying travel insurance had never entering my mind up until this upcoming June cruise I've been planning (since July 2017) when I started finding out that there is this thing call "travel insurance".
    I mean, I had traveled much in my last 30 years or so, both domestically and aboard (ie, Paris, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, a RCCL cruise over a decade ago), had never purchased any travel insurance, and nothing ever happened, and my travels all were completed smoothly without a glitch.

    I purchased trip insurance through my travel agent and then hurricane Maria took out almost every islands we were traveling too including our beginning port San Juan. Royal Caribbean was telling us the trip was still on although the airport was closed and we had no way to get there. We were dismayed to say the least. We called our travel insurance company and they said, sorry, nothing we can do. The hurricane didn’t happen during your cruise. Seriously? $400 down the drain for full coverage trip insurance. Fortunately our hotel reimbursed us because they were closed due to extensive damage, we called Delta and they kindly reimbursed us and Royal finally cancelled the cruise about 20 hours prior to it. Up until that point they were telling us to just fly in the day of the cruise. Seriously? Now I’m distrustful of cruise insurance. What if it’s another scam and I really need it? They all talk a good game but when push comes to shove they come up with excuses why your not covered. I thought buying through my travel agent I could trust it now I’m weary of them all.

    Travel Guard Insurance is virtually impossible to use. Even if you read the policy you will not know the volume of documentation required for coverage. It a complete waste of money, you will never be covered. For instance in the policy it states that you need a letter from your doctor advising you not to travel by air to get coverage for a cancelled trip. Upon apply for coverage refund you will find addition documentation required that would take your doctor an hour to fill out completely. I doubt any doctor would be willing to fill out the required forms. Skip any product from Travel Guard.

    • @Donsfamilyvacations
      @Donsfamilyvacations  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      if it's canceled because of hurricanes or something like that and the ship does not sail then they will either offer you a refund and a credit for another cruise. if you cancel it for a reason then it depends on the coverage you got and what % is covered.

    Sorry to disagree with you, but I think that organising travel insurance through your cruise line is the last thing you should do. You could end up paying double, or even treble the amount that an identical cover would cost online. In Europe it is often cheaper to buy an annual policy rather than paying for two individual cruises. Another advantage is that if you book, for example, a cruise on NCL, and then another on MSC, you will probably have to sort out two entirely different policies. An annual policy will automatically pick up all your booked trips, so if you book a cruise today, for July 2019, you will be covered if you fall seriously ill tomorrow, so long as the insurance does not expire before the end of the cruise. I worked in travel insurance for years. A lot of the premium goes in preparing paperwork, payments to agents or brokers and investigating some of the claims. Only a relatively small percentage is used to pay claims.
    If you have got lots of money, but little time to waste, then fine, get insurance through the cruise line. On the other hand, I would prefer to save $80 by spending an hour researching and then making sure that I am scrupulously honest filling in the application. In my personal opinion, it is more likely that someone will get a claim denied because of the unlucky person having a pre-existing medical condition if someone else filled the application form in for them. Finally , only use insurers whom you recognise.

    I am ambivalent about travel insurance. My travel agent just adds it, but I have a credit card that has the same sort of travel insurance. I had occasion to make a claim, as some idiot nicked my ipad. Wellllll.. since it wasn't bought within the last 90 days, too bad. The travel insurance would pay me a tad over $200 USD. But Americans can use European medical for emergencies without cost. They will NOT fly you back, so..be forewarned. So, I think it's all about the total cost of your trip as you say and what extensive coverage you want. It's not cheap. I paid three hundred Euros for mine. Like your cruise videos. Very entertaining.

    My travel insurance policy, which is probably similar to most, does not cover most/any otherwise included insurance expenses related to a pandemic. The corona virus was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Therefore, people travelling with those policies may be out of luck for coverage for trip cancellation/interruption/delay. Unless a refund or credit is issued by the insurance company, the result is that people paid their money for little benefit. Plus, what about those who had their trips cancelled by the cruise company? Shouldn't they get their money back automatically? So far, I haven't!

    Hi Don! So glad I found your channel (and subscribed!).
    I'm a bit confused about the travel insurance. I got it on each of my previous 4 cruises through the cruise line with no issue. However, after booking & paying for my 5th, I had a serious issue and needed to cancel. Aon put me through hell and had every excuse not to refund my money. They wanted vast medical documents from my Dad (he's the reason I cancelled) so finally I said never mind. Instead, I booked a different trip for a few months later and Carnival refunded all but my deposit so I could then pay for the new trip. I am now not comfortable getting the travel insurance since it seems to be a rip off. 😢 Any advice?

    • @chriswilliams6568
      @chriswilliams6568 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Insurance is a minefield, but bear in mind they have to have all docs to prove your case as so many people try to rip them off. If you have to cancel, you must do it while you are in that cancellation penalty period, if you hold off cancelling, and you fall into a higher penalty period, insurance will not pay that extra. You must read the policy. All terms are in it. Beware of pre existing conditions. Good luck. In Canada the cruise lines insurance is very minimal, I never buy that. I usually buy from my bank, and compare to CAA.

    scams out there have to be careful - 69 and 65 years old here over 70+ cruises and traveling the country europe and the world - i think about it but never take it - we once went on a 28 day cruise in 2017 to northern europe and 12 days prior my husband had a double hernia that failed to heal - the prostrate fell into the euretha so he had to wear a bag connected to his bladder through his penis for that trip - we never needed to attend a medical professional while on the ship - i feel like whelp we have a great insurance policy and a credit card that i use that covers stuff - im on the fence on spending extra for that - - so far have never taken anything extra risky probably

      I was sick and spent one night in supposedly hospital. I had the insurance with carnival but had to pay next day on my sail and sign then got my money back several months later. What happens if you can't afford the doctor bill but have carnival insurance ..what happens then.

    I'm confused. The cruise line insurance costs "a little more" whereas independents are "much cheaper".

      R.a.t.t.y , if you buy the same type policy yourself through a third Party, it’s a little cheaper than going through the cruise line. He is talking about the full coverage type. If you go through the third party and buy a less comprehensive policy, it will be much cheaper.

    If you buy the insurance with the cruise line, do you need separate insurance for the flight? Say a snowstorm delays your flight, they lose all your luggage etc? I actually plan to fly in a day early to avoid any crazy stuff but you know things happen. The cruise line insurance seemed VERY expensive too, so perhaps external insurance is better?
