    Hi Matt, appreciate your videos. Some questions I had:
    1) detailed size comparisons with the old xps15, and some other newer laptops like the Razer blade 15, GS66 would be nice
    2) is the power brick able to charge the laptop over full gaming/content creation load
    3) thermals and power limits under prolonged gaming/content creation load
    4) your thoughts on the 60hz display vs other options with higher refresh rate.
    Thanks so much! Looking forward to the full review

    Here's a tip for anyone looking to buy a new laptop, extra important for people interested in Dell products:
    Dell XPS might be a fancy and premium laptop, however - this laptop has so many quality control issues that do not change over the years.
    That kind of purchase from Dell isn't worth that amount of money and trouble that will be caused to you.
    I suggest everyone that consider buying a unit of Dell XPS to take a look at Dell Community Forums or over Reddit and you'll experience true reviews and not just unboxing or irrelevant reviews on TH-cam.
    Sadly, the words I'm saying are marked with my experience from owning Dell XPS 15 7590 (last year's model).
    Ps. I pleasantly watch your content - keep doing a great job, nonetheless I feel like this topic has to be bolder and louder on TH-cam.

    • @AlwynSchoeman
      @AlwynSchoeman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree. I had a lot of issues on one and none on another. Question for myself is do I pay $1000 or a kidney more for an equivalent Thinkpad or take my chances?

  • @Graphologic
    @Graphologic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought a Dell XPS 15 L502x in 2011 and it still packs a punch for regular work and games smoothly. Skyrim and StarCraft 2 on low graphics runs smoothly. It's an i5-2410M, 2.3 GHz, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 525M. Its build quality is really good, screen at 1080p is still crisp albeit with a bit of a leak at the corner, a white backlit keyboard and loads of gaming memories.
    So I think using a laptop for a decade is good, but now I think it is time for an upgrade. I am from India, so my options are a bit limited. What would you all suggest I go for? Something that lasts for another 10 years.

    Thank you for the excellent review Matthew, as always.
    I ordered mine 06/15 and received it last week so long to wait... And I've got the touchpad issue... So after struggling with the customer service which is by the way as bad as we can see everywhere on internet (with 6 different people by mail and phone), they just tell me to send it back, wait for the refund and order a new one... They refused to simply replace it and did not recommend me an official Dell repairer (stunning!)... What a shame, so I did what they asked me but if the new one has the same issue...well bye Dell I can't wait 4 months to have a laptop at this price with no default and a very bad customer service.
    I ordered a new one because as a content creator which prefer windows environment this laptop is a beast despite of the touchpad issue, and I hope this bad experience will not last with this company.
    So my advice for guys who want this laptop, you don't need to have it urgently, and you need to be patient with the customer service, which can really annoy you and that is understandable with a laptop this expensive.

    • @MatthewMoniz
      @MatthewMoniz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree their customer support is atrocious!! But they do have a nice 30 day return policy, which is better then Apples 15

      I ordered a custom built XPS 15 9500 on 07/10. So I know it was built after they claim to have implemented trackpad manufacturing corrections. Only issue I can find so far is some slight stuttering in Bluetooth audio. I see Killer networking has an updated driver that is not currently available on Windows or Dell. Not sure what to make of your service interaction as I know others had units replaced.

    I work IT and I just had a client come in with this exact laptop for setup and it was loud out of the box. I was certain it was a driver error though because when I updated everything through Windows and Dell Support Assist, it worked just fine. Still it kind of scared me that they're putting semi-desktop level power in a thin laptop with not that many places for cooling.

    I need your help. No one ever talks about high-end laptops for extreme productivity. I am a Doctoral student, own an investment firm, and run a nonprofit. At any given time I am running Word, Excel, & Powerpoint with 5 or 10 projects on each one. Then, I am running 3 internet browsers (Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Chrome) with anywhere from 100 to 150 tabs at the same time. Multi-tasking is critical. I run a 13" HP Spectre (4 years old) with 8GB RAM which freezes up constantly. I also run a 17" HP Envy (Almost 5 years old) with 16GB RAM which freezes up a lot as well. I am constantly having to shut down and restart. Under normal usage, both laptops are awesome. What is a great high-end laptop for productivity that won't freeze up? I am running two 27" Dell P2720D monitors. Finally, I travel a lot and being portable would be helpful. Thanks

Also the Webcam: 1080p is a must in a high end notebook. I guess the Surface line, which is not much thicker and only has a minimally wider bezel, has spoiled me.

    Hey Mat, the reason that there's some flex on the display is because you have the fhd+ display which has a plastic front and a plastic bezel. With the Uhd+ display config. the display unit is very stiff and so it doesn' flex almost all. It isn't because of the thickness or sturdiness of the almunium, it's because of the plastic front.

    I heard that this XPS 17 might have some charging issues. While it does come with a 130w charger, there have been some reports of it only pulling 100w max. In other cases, like video rendering or gaming, the processor will pull more than the 130w from the charger, getting the rest from the battery and causing it to drain slowly.
    Other than that, looks like a solid laptop, and I might buy one in the next year or so.

    Yo I think the "drainage" isn't actually a drainage of the battery. It is rather a feature to spare the battery. When it's fully loaded, the percentage will drop to about 80% and then it will go up to 100% again. I'm probably wrong, but I've seen my Lenovo doing this. It'ssupposed to increase the batterys lifespan. I'd guess you could change that in the bios/uefi. Maybe you can adress this in your review!

    Yes but you got a working unit. You got lucky it seems most of them have the trackpad issue even after dell said it fixed it. I'm not taking any chances unfortunately, I hope next gen will definitely solve this issue.

    The WiFi / Network performance is impacted by the Killer Software Suite. This has been a known issue for Dell systems using the Killer Network cards and the installed Killer Suite for some time. The XPS 9500 and 9700 are no different. When comparing WiFi / Network performance against other systems the Dells are usually 300 to 400% slower! If you uninstall the Killer software and use the Killer remover software found on the Killer Site @t and then download and install only the Drivers your WiFi / Network performance will improve considerably!

    2. Better Speakers (like the macbooks)
    3. 120Hz display no matter the resolutions (like in the razer blades)

      Don't know why people complain about 720p webcams, I guess they watch Netflix 4k without realizing the impact that has on powering the internet.
      Have they solved the quality issues yet with higher refresh rates? I.e. lower quality panels needed? Also impact on battery life?

    My model (i7-10850H + RTX 2060 Max Q) does get very hot, even with the vapor chamber. (I have the thermal profile set to "Ultra Performance", though.) I NEED ALL THE POWER I CAN GET FROM MY LAPTOP! I do wish that a full load, wouldn't drain the battery when plugged in, though.

    • @AlwynSchoeman
      @AlwynSchoeman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen an article where they say that usb-c is limited to 100W and that dell has some handshaking to tell the charger it is ok to push 130W. They suspect this is faulty in some laptops and hope it can be fixed with a firmware update.
      Still even at 130W with the GPU maxed out I wont be surprised if it trickles down. Afaik even the macs have that issue.
