    Welcome to Canada! Just a couple of notes: having money to buy a car is great but it’s also very important to know how to drive during a Canadian winter. In addition, as was stated by another viewer, Canada has serious geography going on and most UK citizens have no idea about the distances one has to traverse when travelling between communities here. Public transport hasn’t been as much of a priority here due to the popularity of cars, however, it is improving more and more. Good luck with your Canadian life! 👍🏻🇨🇦

    By default, you get 2 weeks a year by law after working for a year. However, you can negotiate what vacation you are entitled to. You can make it 3 weeks or 4 weeks. Usually employers are ok with that after your 3 to 6 month probationary period.

    The credit score situation blew my mind when I moved to Canada. We couldn’t get an internet connection in our apartment as we had no credit score yet. It took 3 days of calling round different providers and asking to speak to managers before we finally managed to persuade someone to give us a connection. For rent we had to give 12 months of post-dated checks. I was really worried that this was some sort of scam, but it was fine in the end.

      Inter.net.ca is a great company if you don't mind standard DSL, they have several tiers, unfortunately due to my building's age and telecom infrastructure I can only max 15 MB , but they have much higher than that. The best benefit I've had from them is that they have never raised my rates in over 15 years. (I changed my tier in 2014 to 15MB from 5MB which was the only raise in price I've experienced from them)

    Please keep in mind Canada is huge. Traveling from a smaller town to a city means covering greater distances. There's also regional, municipal, and provincial transit systems that you have to transfer between. It will be more expensive. I lived in London for a year. England is tiny in comparison and more densely packed with people. The transit system there does not deal with such large distances.

    • @LouiseWareArmstrong
      @LouiseWareArmstrong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HK77 it’s a lot quicker to get to Toronto from where I live now then my home town in England to the nearest city .. yet it costs double. A lot of people I have met have also mentioned how expensive public transport is as well.
      To go 5 minutes down the road costs double in a taxi then it would in UK. It’s just how it is :)

    To transfer money from Canada to the U.K. or vice versa, you can try using HSBC's global transfer and most transfers only take seconds to complete. The only thing is that you need to have an HSBC account at both places and HSBC 's headquarters is in the U.K, by the way.

    Me and my husband have only recently explored the idea of moving to Canada. This holiday thing puts me right off, as well as the credit score. We ideally wanted to do 12 months in Canada to see if it was for us, no pressure if not as we would just go back home. But it seems we would have to start our credit scored from scratch everytime. This is worrying.

    • @LouiseWareArmstrong
      @LouiseWareArmstrong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Honestly don't let those things put you off, I only done a video so people were aware before coming. There is so many positives to the move. Credit score we managed to get a good score within a month!! we got a credit card on our first day we arrived we payed for everything on it and moved the money over straight away. Now we have a better score then we did in the UK!
      With the holiday situation each year you work with a company you get more days. you only start with 2 weeks for the first year. To be honest we have saved our vacation last year and it rolled over to this year so we have 4 weeks. Because last we just used our 2 days off a week to go places.

      @@LouiseWareArmstrong oh amazing, this makes me feel better. How about mortgages, do you know of anything about them? We own a house here and will have a fair chunk to put down on a mortgage over there. However, we wouldn't be doing this until we are 100% wanting to move.
      In terms of working weeks and hours, I assume this will vary between jobs? I currently work a 4 day week, 35hrs, 1 in 7 weekends. Thank you for putting my mind back at ease xx

    Hi Louise. It''s been a lot of years since I've worked at a 'job' but back in the day when I was working in an office environment, we not only got vacation days (yes, unfortunately only 2 weeks) but also sick days. If I only needed a day here and there, I would use a sick or personal day so I didn't have to use up any vacation days. Maybe you have this as well that you can take advantage of when the need arises? Awesome about your new job. I'm rootin' for you and Jake that you will have a smooth process for getting your PR next year :D

    Depends there are a lot of landlords who will work with you if you are not so well off, they may want some other kind of surety, such as multiple names on the lease, a letter from your employer or so forth. You need to be careful though there are far too many snakes who will take advantage of you. Best advice I can give is contact a realtor. They do t just sell houses or condos, they also broker rental properties. They can help you sell YOU to the prospective landlord and once you build up a relationship with them they can help you find your first home purchase.

    Vacation and Holiday.
    In Canada you have to understand these are two different things.
    Vacation time is personal. Usually starts with two weeks and depending on Employer over time can work it’s way up to a maximum of Eight weeks usually.
    Usually at a rate of two weeks for each additional five years.
    Holidays refer to what we call Stat Holidays or Statutory Holidays.
    There are many and usually are planned so that we have a 3 day weekend.
    So either the Friday or the Monday will be the holiday.
    Normally if you work for a car Manufacturer. Or a car that supplies parts to a car Manufacturer the Company insists you take one week minimum of vacation in the month of June because Car manufacturers shut down for two weeks in June.
    Stat Holidays also include. Dec 25,26 and January 1.
    So it is quite common to be off for no less than a week at end of year.
    This is dependant on Employer and Industry you are in.
    For more specific information see this site.
    www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0
    I would speak to a fellow employee you know to ask them about your Employer and Christmas Holidays.

    • @LouiseWareArmstrong

      @@LouiseWareArmstrong we use both terms here in Canada too, but what I think the poster was trying to say was in the legal terms an employer would use, there is a difference. If you request time off that is ‘vacation’ and ‘holidays’ are legally mandated by the government-what we call ‘calendar’ holidays (X-mas, Thanksgiving, Labour Day etc.). Similar to UK’s ‘bank holidays’ ex. Hope that helps.

    Holidays depend on what province you live in, where you work and for how long. I live in Manitoba where companies are required by law to give you two weeks holiday and then after 5 years, 3 weeks. And most companies have their own holiday increments. After 10 years in my last job, I had 5 weeks holiday. So it can vary from province to province and company to company. Also whether the company and your position is unionized or not.

      WTF???? Two weeks? five years & you only get 3 weeks? In all the snow? I thought you got two months plus public holidays. What's the point, of moving to Canada, if not to go on vacation & hiking trips. In the UK you get 4 weeks first year then one extra day for each year you do with that company.
