In my 82 years the best live entertainment I ever saw and heard was Roy Clark at the casino in Bark River, Mi. He was unbelievable playing several instruments. A real gentleman. 🙏🏽❤️👏😇
I've told this story many times, but it bears telling again. Back in '77 or '78 I was attending Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. I was renting a room from an old retired gentleman, Cliff Biltz. Cliff had a hobby building high quality banjos, and he had quite a following. Late at night musicians who had played gigs in Cincinnati or Dayton would drive to Oxford to play and buy Cliff's banjos. I would hear them downstairs playing, and they all sounded damn good. One night I was awakened by somebody playing banjo that blew all those other banjo players away, compared to him they all sounded like rank beginners. I was so tempted to sneak down the stairs and peak around the corner to see who this banjo god was, but it was 2 or 3 in the morning and I had an 8 o'clock class so I reluctantly went back to sleep. The next day when I saw Cliff I asked him who that was playing banjo last night, and he proudly said it was Roy Clark. If you ever see video of Roy playing a banjo with "Biltz" on the headstock (I heard he played it at least once on Hee Haw) that's the banjo I heard him playing that night.
Ain't it funny how time slips away...I haven't thought about Roy Clark for sometime. Now I find myself here paying my respects to an American Legend, and listening to his life story from the man himself. Thank you Roy Clark

Rarely does an interviewer have enough confidence in the interviewees to allow them to talk. Roy lived a fulfilling and productive life. He was a phenom, a phenomenal man. I enjoyed him since the early 60s.
I remember living in Tulsa and meeting Roy in business. I visited his home and always remember his guitar and banjo sitting by the front door waiting on him to take on the road. Always super nice.
I am a metal guitar player: but Roy is one of kind and in my mind untouchable...a blazing guitar picker. God bless you Roy....you inspired me to pick up the guitar, but I will never be able to play to the level of your guitar blazing.....you set the bar so high.

Hey guys. I fell in love with the guitar when I knew my daughter was passionate about it. After the last couple of years, I have a solid understanding of music theory as well as a solid understanding of the fretboard. As far as skill, I'm just "ok" right now. I can play a few songs but I mostly like to just put on jam tracks and improvise.

back in the 70's I was involved in Radio controlled airplanes, not many know it but Roy was well known in those circles, he flew models to relax, and he was just like any of the other guys on the field. never boasting or acting arrogant, just having fun like the rest of us.
I always loved the faces he would make as he was playing. It was like he was having such a great time. Pickin, rolling his eyes, biting his tongue, I loved it!!!

One morning back in 1974, my sister and I were standing at the crossroads of two dirt roads near our house outside of Springer, Oklahoma, waiting for the school bus. A baby blue car came speeding down the road, heading East. As the car went past us, we could see it was full of men, and on the passenger side of the front seat sat a round man, grinning and waving at us. My sister and I immediately looked at each other and simultaneously said, That was Roy Clark! I don't know who the other men in the car were. Could have been Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs in there with him. I don't know, but it was a thrill seeing Roy. We had to wait all day, until we got home from school, to tell our parents about seeing Mr. Clark.
I have been playing guitar for almost 40 yrs in the Rock Metal style but now have realized that seeing Roy play on Hee Haw is what really got me going! I also have always had an appreciation for country and bluegrass! This all makes sense now! Wow
What a musician! I forgot how much I loved Roy Clark when I was a little kid watching Hee Haw with my grandpa. He has alot to teach the new generation of players if they only give him an ear and pay attention. RIP Roy! You are already missed!

What a wonderful interview! I went to Roy Clark Elementary in Tulsa Oklahoma when it was first built, and I could not be prouder of the man and his legacy. He has, and always will be, a class act.

WOW !!! ... one of my guitar heroes ... bought his first album "The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark" in 1960 and attempted to learn all the songs on that album ... only managed about half of them ... still hoping to sit and jam with Roy ... fantastic musician and true entertainer ...
He's a class act. My dad and I ran into him at Knott's Berry Farm's Good Time Theater. We were walking around and we ran into him when he was going to the theater. He was in a hurry to get backstage but he stopped to talk to us and was very cordial.
I bet he cursed and rolled his eyes as he walked away. Everyone LOVES to be interrupted while they're trying to earn a living. That was very thoughtful of you to stop him and force him to talk. I bet you push people out of the way in line, too. Don't ya?

3 greatest entertainers of all time: Roy, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. They came from an era of great content on Television and they were very talent as musicians and entertainers. Love them.
I would guess that Roy has inspired more young musicians than just about anyone. He made the extremely difficult seem completely effortless. And when I was 10, like so many others.. I watched this guy and thought ... "He looks like he's having more fun than I even dreamed possible - So what 'well' has he been drinking from and how can I overdose on it!?" His generosity as a human and as a musician is beyond measure. Thank you, Roy, for inspiring ME!
You young fellows, keep this in mind. Roy Clark could play anything with strings as well as anybody walking the Earth these days. And he could do it with a smile on his face looking you in the eye.

51 years ago at age 9 when I picked up the guitar, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were my go to musicians who I watched religiously. I never read music but I had the beat and learned the chords and things fell into place. I learned so much from the Glen Campbell good time hour and HEE HAW, those were my practice sessions. LOL
Mine too, sitting in the living room with folks watching hee Haw and GC, with the folks just waiting for something to be played a that I could catch a hold to .Me and my old $14 Western auto flat top with Black Diamond bailing wire strings and the neck held on by twisted nylon twine .Thank you Roy and Glen for all the life you gave me even the divorces and rehabs .........LOL
One of the most underrated and newly rediscovered guitarists and entertainers of all time. Every young musician should study this man. Not only was he great but he never was a scandal.
It was only 1 time, but I had the great fortune of seeing Roy in a very small concert and was able to see the true magic of his talent, and managed somehow to meet him after the show and was amazed that someone of his caliber would bother taking time to talk with me with sincerity and to thank me for attending his performance. He was truly a performers performer who had a genuine love for his fans.

he is a legend up here in Canada as well i grew up watching him on tv amazing talent if you havent seen him yet check out a guitarist by the name of Justin Johnson another good old boy who plays allmost anything with strings another amazing talent!
It's a shame today's young people have such a short attention span. There's a lot that can be learned from our elders (famous or not), especially when they are as open as Roy. I remember him from Hee Haw and for being a top notch musician. But this interview offers a nice insight into his career that I never knew. Thanks for posting.
One major thing all the great musicians have in common besides talent...., is a totally consuming semi-pathological obsession with playing music that totally overwhelms and controls their heart, mind, and soul to a point where “all” they want to do in every moment in their lives is play music. If you can relate to this, give me a thumbs up.

Excellent interview with this iconic picker. I had the pleasure of meeting his brother and his family band in Virginia. His brother and I worked for the same construction company, and his family band played at a company picnic. I met him later on a road construction job in the winter. I was operating a sheep foot roller with no cab, and he was operating a motor grader with an enclosed cab and a heater on board. He said, son hop in here and warm up. Fond memories

He owned several airplanes over the years and had a pilot's license. A couple of those airplanes were damned demanding to fly.

What a wonderful interview! I went to Roy Clark Elementary in Tulsa Oklahoma when it was first built, and I could not be prouder of the man and his legacy. He has, and always will be, a class act.

He's a class act. My dad and I ran into him at Knott's Berry Farm's Good Time Theater. We were walking around and we ran into him when he was going to the theater. He was in a hurry to get backstage but he stopped to talk to us and was very cordial.
I bet he cursed and rolled his eyes as he walked away. Everyone LOVES to be interrupted while they're trying to earn a living. That was very thoughtful of you to stop him and force him to talk. I bet you push people out of the way in line, too. Don't ya?

Roy Clark is one of the reasons that I started playing guitar.. My father gave me his banjo after I learned 'Foggy Mtn Breakdown' by slowing down Roy Clark Live... thank you Roy!!!
I am a nobody, but Mr. Clark is THE reason I let it rip on my guitar and any other stringed instruments I can lay hands on ... it makes me feel good and that's the best therapy for what ails ya. Thank you Mr. Clark and thanks for this wonderful interview.

I've been watching him and hearing him for well over 50 years, and I still love everything I see and hear. He was a master.
I would guess that Roy has inspired more young musicians than just about anyone. He made the extremely difficult seem completely effortless. And when I was 10, like so many others.. I watched this guy and thought ...
"He looks like he's having more fun than I even dreamed possible - So what 'well' has he been drinking from and how can I overdose on it!?"
His generosity as a human and as a musician is beyond measure. Thank you, Roy, for inspiring ME!

What a fantastic interview! I got to meet him once very briefly, probably mid to late 70's, and he was just as down to earth then as he is now.
Roy was so talented! Nothing he couldn’t do on stage. Buy than again every minute of his life he was on stage. Miss you Roy Clark and thank you for the fun memories.
What an amazing mind Roy had at this age, he's able to articulate so well and it blows me away how clearly he remembers every detail of so many events in his life. Roy is a true hero and inspiration.

51 years ago at age 9 when I picked up the guitar, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell were my go to musicians who I watched religiously. I never read music but I had the beat and learned the chords and things fell into place. I learned so much from the Glen Campbell good time hour and HEE HAW, those were my practice sessions. LOL
Mine too, sitting in the living room with folks watching hee Haw and GC, with the folks just waiting for something to be played a that I could catch a hold to .Me and my old $14 Western auto flat top with Black Diamond bailing wire strings and the neck held on by twisted nylon twine .Thank you Roy and Glen for all the life you gave me even the divorces and rehabs .........LOL

One of the most underrated and newly rediscovered guitarists and entertainers of all time. Every young musician should study this man. Not only was he great but he never was a scandal.
It was only 1 time, but I had the great fortune of seeing Roy in a very small concert and was able to see the true magic of his talent, and managed somehow to meet him after the show and was amazed that someone of his caliber would bother taking time to talk with me with sincerity and to thank me for attending his performance. He was truly a performers performer who had a genuine love for his fans.
he was the real deal ,great guitar playe ,banjo player ,fiddle and mando and a great harmony singer and a unique lead singing voice , yesterday when i was young
he is a legend up here in Canada as well i grew up watching him on tv amazing talent if you havent seen him yet check out a guitarist by the name of Justin Johnson another good old boy who plays allmost anything with strings another amazing talent!

It's a shame today's young people have such a short attention span. There's a lot that can be learned from our elders (famous or not), especially when they are as open as Roy. I remember him from Hee Haw and for being a top notch musician. But this interview offers a nice insight into his career that I never knew. Thanks for posting.

At 42, Roy clark was a huge part of my life growing up in Kentucky. Hee Haw was a staple in my families home. I wish times were still that simple..
One major thing all the great musicians have in common besides talent...., is a totally consuming semi-pathological obsession with playing music that totally overwhelms and controls their heart, mind, and soul to a point where “all” they want to do in every moment in their lives is play music. If you can relate to this, give me a thumbs up.

Excellent interview with this iconic picker. I had the pleasure of meeting his brother and his family band in Virginia. His brother and I worked for the same construction company, and his family band played at a company picnic. I met him later on a road construction job in the winter. I was operating a sheep foot roller with no cab, and he was operating a motor grader with an enclosed cab and a heater on board. He said, son hop in here and warm up. Fond memories
