Conrail Clearfield

  • In March 1990 I spent a weekend with some friends on Conrail's lines around Clearfield, PA. The first segment is a chase of an empty PEPCO coal train southeast out of Clearfield through Phillipsburg to Osceola Mills, followed by a brief sequence of a PP&L coal train loading at the Kinport Mine. The second segment is a run on the Snow Shoe Industrial to the refractory plant at Clarence, PA. The air horn on the 8049 is a WABCO E2B1 chime horn which is very rare, and I am told most likely came from a PRR GP9. At the time of the video this line was on borrowed time, last run was in 1993. This stretch of track is now a recreational trail. The third segment is along the Cherry Tree Secondary heading towards Clearfield. Our chase was interrupted when the train got a knuckle near Curwensville.

I had no idea any video of Conrail activity on the Snow Shoe Industrial line existed on the internet. As somebody who has spent his entire twenty-one year existence thus far growing up and living in the Snow Shoe area, well after the railroad was long gone, this is really, really cool.

This is pure gold! I live in Tyrone and only wish that the segment to Osceola Mills had been intact and active in my lifetime. I believe it was removed by PC in 1975.

They closed the old Snow Shoe rr bridge to forwheelers and atv. Said they were afraid bears were jumping off. So now you have to find a way around the bridge. I wish RJ Corman would reopen that rail line. Be pretty cool to see trains going on it when you cross I-80 West.

Agreed seems like they wasted more money taking them out then just leaving the things alone other than to make paths for ATV which they destroy or want you pay yo ride on anyway. Things sure have changed a lot in 20 years around here. Peal is also gone now, epa came in and leveled everything.

Very unlikely. Resource Recovery, LLC, the company that wanted to put in the landfill, was all but chased out of town by local opposition. They still own the land that they wanted to use for the landfill, but the landfill project itself has been dead for nearly ten years.

@Pgh412aviation 1990 was the last service to the customer at Clarence who stopped shipping by rail. The line was officially abandoned in 1990. Any further rail operations (I assume you have some evidence of this given your citing of a 1993 date) were probably associated with track removal.
